Mufumbwe council workers in 30-month salary arrears

Share

Council workers in Mufumbwe have not been paid their salaries and wages for 30 months and have appealed to government to look into their plight to avert suffering.

Mufumbwe Council Secretary, Aaron Kamalondo, comfirmed in an interview that the council was finding it difficult to raise funds since its revenue base is very low.

Mr Kamalondo said the council collects K12 million per month from its revenue against K50 million monthly wage bills for the workers.

He said the council has no capacity to settle the arrears which were disrupting its operations and the K1.7 billion debt it owes many organizations such as NAPSA with K55 million unremitted contribution funds.

Mr Kamalondo said the council was struggling to pay the workers and has since appealed to government to bail the local authority out of the financial crisis it is facing.

Meanwhile, Mr Kamalondo has said that campaign activities in Kikonge ward by elections in Mufumbwe were going on smoothly with two candidates from MMD and UPND/PF pact being fielded.

Kikonge ward fell vaccan after the UPND councillor Moses Mangisha resigned from his party and joined MMD adding that the UPND/PF pact has fielded Bruce Kanema as its candidate while the MMD has retained Moses Mangisha as its candidate.

And a check by ZANIS at Kikonge and Nyasonso polling stations found campaign activities have heightened with the two parties anticipating victory.

The local government by election is scheduled to take place on August 13, 2009.

  1. Zed never ceases to amaze me. we have someone going for 30 months without pay yet someone doing less work for less that period what gratuity. I dont know which law they quote. Those who have the latest zambian constitution, may you avail me the copy or just post the thread on this blog for me to know if in zambia other than Moral Purgers are entitled to mid term grauity. I worked under contract but was never given even my full gratuity at the end of the contract and i never even heard of mid term gratuity in my contract. so which contractual obligations do these chaps quote when it comes to getting their money at parliament?

  2. #4…..verY correct. They dont work. How can you work for 3 years without salary? If people cant work even for one day without a wage how much more will they not work for 30 months. No people these guys steal from the council no wonder there is no development in districts. PLEASE LT TELL THESE GUYS TO QUIT AND START FARMING.

  3. I have no comment.. 4 and 5 have said it all. What has made them to say this time because 3 years its too much?

  4. Have mercy. These people needs their salaries. Tetamashimba, why are you Local Govt. Minister? Can you tell the Nation?

  5. This council is not viable.
    Monthly revenue K12m.
    Monthly wages K50m.
Payroll 2 and half years behind.

I agree with #4 and #5. Do these workers really work, go in at 8am and knock off at 5pm? What do they live on.

May be they should just close shop, pack and leave a big poster “Council no longer operates”.

  6. I don’t know what to say.
Its either these workers are dumb stup1d or they are lying.
Honestly, who can work for three years and not get paid. Why keep working for them? get another job, go and farm, hustle….

  7. Some of the things some of the bloggers say are simply, thoughtless! 4, 5 and all who follow your narrow points of view. Trash.
