Cholera to affect the tourism industry-Saasa

Share

A renowned economist says the outbreak of cholera has drastically affected the performance of the economy.

Professor Oliver Saasa has noted that the cholera outbreak has had a negative tag on the economy as tourists will have to think twice before making Zambia its destination.

Professor Saasa said the country needs to assure all the business houses that it is doing everything possible to ensure that the situation is normalized.

He said the country has been trying its best to market the nation to the outside world but its efforts will be in vain if the epidemic is allowed to spread.

Professor Saasa said he appreciates the interventions that government has put in place to ensure that the outbreak is put to a halt.

He explained that vendors alone cannot take the blame for this calamity that has fallen the Lusaka district and other parts of the country.

Professor Saasa further stated that it calls for a multi-sectoral approach if the fight against cholera is to be fought in the country.

He has noted that consumers also have the duty to ensure that the food they consume is stored in hygienic places and bought from right sources.

Professor Saasa was speaking during a programme on ZNBC dubbed Business Review and monitored by ZANIS in Lusaka.

  1. You’re right, if we also avoiding some foods and places how about those who wish to visit? Most tourist attractions are on water bodies and cholera is water borne. That makes it very difficult. I don’t know if Kuomboka will be on this year

  2. Professor Saasa is politicising cholera. What is Mumbi Phiri going to say? Cholera, Economics, politics are now in the same pot. Ba Koswe will have a feast. Who would want to tour cholera centres? How can a cholera centre be a tourist attraction? Amazing stuff from this cesspit of a country!

  3. To effectively fight eradicate Street Vending let the Local Government pass a law that prohibits motorists from buying merchandise (food stuff, airtime vouchers, and all sorts of things) from these vendors who line themselves on robot points. If this is effected, this thing of street vending will d1e a natural death.
We dont need donors to provide us solutions that are so basic!

  4. South africa has been struggling with Listeriosis since July there has been no mention of tourism being affected. by the listeriosis is more deadly than cholera. Zambia has effectively combated cholera so sentiments by Saasa are misplaced

    • They are completely misplaced sentiments by Saasa – is this the first time that Zambia is going through a Cholera outbreak in the rainy season?

  5. As long as we remain a chaotic nation with few rules and weak institutions cholera and other ills will remain with us.Rwanda ,Spain or Japan don’t have cholera bcuz they’ve got strict rules .

  6. What the Prof. Has sais it’s true. I have been watching tourist from southern region, Bostwana , Namibia, South Africa big time, tourists going there, but not Zambia , why? Cholera. Zambia is losing on this.
