Patrick Phiri sets sweet target at Nakambala

Veteran coach Patrick Phiri has re-joined Nakambala Leopards with the aim of helping the club to win the FAZ Super Division title.

Nakambala re-hired Phiri last month after he parted ways with Lusaka Dynamos.

The charismatic trainer believes Nakambala, who survived relegation on the final day of last season, can challenge for the title this year.

“I guess every team is going for the championship. I know that we are a small club compared to the big teams especially on the Copperbelt and Lusaka,” Phiri told Prime T.V.

Phiri said the Mazabuka club can emulate English side Leicester City who won the 2015/16 Premier League title after spending much of the previous season in the relegation zone before finishing 14th.

“We would like to take a leaf from the league in Europe where we saw a small team (Leicester) work hard and managed to get the championship. If we work hard we will be able to do well. So we have to emulate them it all depends on hard work,” he said.

“I think there is a lot of better organisation in the club. A lot of support has come our way and we are very grateful. As you can see the organisation of the club has improved tremendously. I think we are able to compete at the highest level now with the big teams as long as we work hard,” Phiri said.

Nakambala finished 14th in the league last season.
