Education Minister Dora Siliya has said there is need for the nation to have a significant mass of educated people for the country to attain most of its goals.

Ms Siliya says the country needs educated citizens and for this to be achieved there is need to review the existing policies that have been in place for the past 30 years.

She said it was for this reason that her ministry has gone on an ambitious programme to expand infrastructure development in order to enhance the enrollment and retention of children in schools especially the girl child.

Ms Siliya was speaking in Lusaka today during the launch of the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED)’s Credit Suisse Program and the presentation of 48 computers to six of the 15 schools CAMFED sponsors.

CAMFED an international organization established in 2001 operates in rural areas in five African countries and supports girls in upper primary school and meets all direct costs of secondary education.

In Zambia CAMFED is currently operating in Western, Luapula and Northern Provinces and is in 22 districts of these provinces.

Ms Siliya thanked CAMFED for supplementing government’s efforts in the provision of quality education in the country.
She said her ministry was looking at ways of embracing technology to enhance the delivery of quality education.

She said technology plays a vital role in shaping the socio-economic landscape of any nation hence the need to make technology accessible to every child in the country.

And speaking earlier, CAMFED Board Chairperson, Esther Sinkala said CAMFED’s programme has grown significantly from the time it was established in 2001.

Ms Sinkala said CAMFED is no longer giving bursaries and grants alone, but also addressing the quality of teaching and learning in its partner schools.

She said the Credit Suisse Programme is one of the programmes that will address quality delivery in the education sector.

Educated people do not always need to be employed by someone. They can become employers themselves. As I once said before, I say again that the education system in Zambia was inherited from the British colonial system. It is an education system that produces employEEs and not employERs. The system produces copy-cats and not original thinkers. Children are not allowed to question but to shut up and do as they are told! As can be seen from Zambian blogs, rumour and innuendo is peddled as fact. No one questions and those who do are pilloried, incacerated and ridiculed. Most graduates from our institutions cannot evaluate a paper. Ministers cannot read between the lines. Zambia loses a lot of cases in international courts.

  7. In the developed world a majority of engineers, accountants, IT specialists, plumbers, builders, carpenters and even doctors (GPs) are self employed. In hospitals, Consultants are part employed by the state but also self employed in private practice (in UK and other national health service countries). Even some nurses either run their own care homes or work pflexible hours to suit their lifestyle! Anyone who remains employed will never be richer than the employer. Work for a poor government and you too will be poor!

  8. How do you have educated people when school calenders especially those of our two Universities are constantly disturbed by these MMD thug government?

  9. zambia needs a smaller-and-competent civil service and g.r.z to stop the business-of-running-business. then every thing else will fall into place – lotsa good schools, losta private companies and a developing economy. no politician or bureaucrat has the expertise or discipline to produce valuable goods and services that people can willingly buy.
zambia has no culture of entrepreneurship or any semblance of a work ethic. fix that and things will change. but we are just wasting time and precious lives. i say let’s sell zambia to china or taiwan, preferably the latter, and secure a DECENT FUTURE for our grand children’s children. it’s time to end this suffering.

  10. #15 The Saint,I don’t agree with you that its possible to be come an employer in Zambia soon after finishing college or Uni.Where the hell in Zambia would you get the money? No bank in Zambia can lend you money to start a business without collateral or security, for Zambians this mean RETAIL. By becoming an employer do you mean buying and selling? If all Zambian employers are into buying and selling who is manufacturing?About nurses creating care homes,I think you have lost it,in Zambia families take care of their own Old Folk.Who the hell can afford dumping their mother in a care home in Zambia.Think of the reality back home before you insult you fellow Zambians stuck with an irresponsible government! Thats why you left,go back to Zambia and be an employer we shall watch you from abroad!

  11. Look the population of Zambia is on approximately 11 to 12 million and Zambia has more than 1/2 of the citizen are in possession of tetiary education of which this number is capable of bringing the brains we need ,but having pipo like you Dora we cannot have any hope of wanting to work in Zambia when thievery is high ,that is stealing AID money and openning accounts in London like Chiluba. One querry how did you Dora become minister ? On what grounds and createria were you chosen? or sucked someone then chosen the following day?
