Friday night’s big Copperbelt derby showdown at Levy Mwanawasa in Ndola between hosts Zesco United and visitors Nkana was abandoned due to crowd trouble.

Two legitimate decisions by referee Wiseman Musako in the last eleven minutes raised dust in the Levy stands with Zesco and Nkana in a dead-heat at 1-1 after Ronald Kampamba put the away side ahead in the 44th minute and Lazarus Kambole equalized for the hosts in the 64th minute.

Eagle-eyed Musako’s first call came in the 79th minute when he yellow carded Nkana striker Idris Mbombo.

Mbombo was correctly cautioned for simulation after he dived when Zesco goalkeeper Jacob Banda beat him the ball and made no contact with his ex-teammate who conjured a phantom foul.

That decision didn’t go down well with the Nkana fans who rained the Levy pitch with beer glass bottles.

Musako halted proceedings for four minutes but play later resumed in the 85th minute when the dust settled after the glass was cleared plus consultations made.

However, a minute before full-time, Musako handed Nkana a justified penalty.

This is after Zesco defender Marcel Kalonda deliberately handled the ball in an aerial duel under pressure from man-of-the-moment Mbombo who could not just elude headlining the night’s drama.

Zesco players cried injustice while their supporters took some unsavoury inspiration off the Nkana fans and bombarded their own pitch with their own stock of beer bottles and action again was paused.

An air of uncertainty then swept through a smouldering but freezing Levy Stadium atmosphere for over ten minutes.

Musako then decided to call off the match to defuse any potential fall-out had play continued, and the spot-kick converted against a Zesco side who were on the verge of losing their 13 match unbeaten run.

FAZ will now decided the final verdict of this derby drama through its disciplinary committee.

  1. Bushe imwe you just want to create a derby where there is no derby. Zesco derby with Forest Rangers not kalampa. Kalamps derbies with power and Kitwe united

    • Thick head, learn to read. It is not a Kitwe derby..but a Copperbelt derby, just like Liverpool and Manchester United’ is a north west derby.

Congratulation to Nkana though..deserved to win

    • Thick head niwe who has no education. You can’t see that the journalist is just desperate to use the word derby? Kopala derby? Its an invention because it means all copperbelt games will be derbies.

  2. Zed derby will be Zanaco vs Zesco. Lusaka Kitwe derby will be Nkana vs Napsa. The dynamos derby will be power vs lusaka

  3. This may be of help as you debate, one website defines a derby as
“Games between two rivals of close geographical proximity are usually called a local derby, or simply just derby ( UK: /?d??rbi/; DAR-bee or. US: /?d??rbi/; DER-bee); a sporting fixture between two teams from the same town, city or region, particularly in association football”.

Key words are “rivals”, “close geographical proximity”, “same town, city or region”.

I doubt that a game between Everton and Manchester City would be called a derby…..was that helpful?

In Zambian politics in the recent past, a derby was between upnd and PF……, although today this is a misnomer because the directionless upnd is wilting and fading away at a rapid pace…..h.h’s tribal political genesis has taken its toll on…

  4. Those fans ‘re a disgrace . The writer is correct. Ref made correct descions. Can FAZ punish these teams for failure to cage their fans.such barbaric behaviour in presence of Orlando pirates

  5. Kikiki, even UPND cadre knows JJ which political party he /she comes from by his/her biasness when analysing issues here.
