Four aspiring candidates for the Solwezi central constituency seat have successfully filed in their nominations for the parliamentary by-election set for November 19 this year.
Forum for Democratic Alternative (FDA) candidate Muhammed Kalela was the first one to file in his nomination at about 10:25 hours accompanied by his party president Dr Ludwig Sondashi and 10 of his supporters.
He was followed by the United Party for National Development (UPND)/Patriotic Front (PF) PACT candidate Watson Lumba who was accompanied by the UPND president Hakahinde Hichilema, and 10 of his supporters filed in at about 11:07 hours.
Others were an independent candidate Tomas Kafula and Movement for Multi-Party democracy (MMD) Albert Chifita at about 11:33 and 13; 30 hours respectively.
Solwezi central constituency by-lection returning officer Elizabeth Kanoka announced the four valid nominations filed in by MMD, UPND/PF Pact, FDA and independent candidates saying no nomination was rejected.
Ms Kanoka announced the results some few minutes after 15 hours.
In another development UPND/PF pact and MMD supporters crushed at Chawama after police allegedly relocated UPND/PF pact from the show grounds to Chawama.
UPND party spokes person Charles Kakoma has accused the police of causing and the violence that happened between MMD and the pact after their candidate filed -in his nomination by relocating them from the place they had earlier been given a permit for.[quote]
“There was bad violence which was supported by both the police and MMD supporters and I am very disappointed that the police exhibited total unprofessionalism,” Mr Kakoma alleged
He said his party was allocated Solwezi show grounds by the police as their gathering point to address party issues which was later alleged given to MMD by the police.
Mr Kakoma said number of an disclosed people were caught up in the fracas and suffered injuries, lost property, cars bashed and windscreens shattered.
Northwestern province police chief Fabian katiba refused to comment over the matter and referred all queries to police spokes person Bonnie Kapeso in Lusaka who by press time said he had not yet received any report on the matter.

Let the best man win. Why do political party cadres always have to fight when they meet. Let them fight each other by showing the other which party is doing more in terms of development. I would never throw a stone on behalf of someone who is enjoying himself in Lusaka at State House. The guy (rupiah) doesn’t even know their names or even worse, their economic and social struggles, but they spend their time risking their lives for nothing!
I hope and pray that MMD will take another thrashing at the polls in Solwezi. They can unleash all their thugs, but they will still lose badly. The writing is on the wall. We have had enough of 18 years of misrule, corruption, misdirection and total arrogance. MMD can only blame themselves for their miserable failure.
The MMD is surely winning this seat. We however thank the opposition for filing in their nominations as this will improve the democracy the nation has enjoyed ever since the MMD won the1991 elections. Even though the opposition will lose, we thank them for their contribution to democracy.
—————–
I wonder why PACT supporters are accustomed to violence. Even on this blog, PACT supporters engage themselves in verbal violence to see who can throw the biggest insult. The PACT leadership must surely look into this as such violence (both verbal and physical) is not healthy for our democracy.
MMD will never win any election in this Country apart from Eastern Provice. If they happen to win it will not be a landslide but a Kangaroo one through VJ Magic!!!
#4 Election rigging in Zambia is an urban legend. Get over it and learn to accept defeat. We lost in Kasama and we accepted defeat and no conspiracy theories and please leave VJ out of this. If we lose Solwezi, which is unlikely, we shall accept and hopefully move on to Kafulafuta or Namwala which ever comes first. And we ask the PACT to realise that in democrasy there is also losing. It is not win all the time and it is dangerous to really give power to people with such mindset. Zambia deserves better opposition and not these political hooligans as shown by pictures coming out of Solwezi
Election obsessed Country!!!! We shall see when this God forsaken country will develop
Time for more violence and feasting by cadres, who is Bashi Chola for the MMD in this by election?
But to the look of things the PACT has an advantage in Solwezi due to the following UN RESOLVED ISSUES:
(1) The acquital of Chiluba on corruption charges (2) the sale of ZAMTEL (3) The now disbanded TASK FORCE (4) Fuel crisis (5) DORA SAGA this clearly shows that the current government is not interested to fight corruption in Zambia ,the PACT just need to educate the people of Solwezi on this .IF THE MMD LOSES IN SOLWEZI I CAN SEE THE SAME THING REPLICATING IN NAMWALA AND NDOLA KAFULAFUTA ##### Coming to MMD as well if they convice the people of Solwezi that they are still uphold Levy’s legacy and the developement in Lumwana may be they out perform the PACT all the same GOOD LUCKY ZAMABIA.
Zambians, polish your boots to kick the MMD where it hurts.
#8 Peace Maker,
I am not sure if the people of Solwezi are occupied with Chiluba’s acquito, or Sale of Zamtel, Task force disbanding, Fuel Crisis, and Dora Saga.
I appreciate that these could serve as good reasons for MMD to be judged on when deciding the vote cast. However, I doubt if these are the issues that form the premises upon which the Solwezi electorate will base their decision.
my view is that the solwezi community will start with things that direct affect or benefit their imediate environment and their lives before they can look at what is at stake at nationa level. You might site fuel shortage as affect them directly, but is you thinking. How many people of solwezi will see the direct effect of fuel on them? how many use the same logic as ours in Lusaka?
Levels of illiteracy in slz are high, very few people have access to ojective information on current affairs just like many other rural areas in zambia. Theres only radio 1& 2 and ZNBC ‘better TV’ to rely on. The biasness of these media and the lack of interest in national affairs debates by these illiterates would gurrantee voting bigotry. These are people who would unquestionably vote on account of tribe or how urgly or handsome the candidate is looking..more work needs to be done in rural areas…good luck PACT
MMD should be kicked out of Solwezi Central Constituency. They have brought alot of misery. Imagine, there was this problem of fuel (petrol) shortage now its diesel. Now they are nu with sale of Zamtel and Zesco optical fibre. By the time MMD mandate would have ended in 2011, alot of plunder of garnd magnitude than FTJ regime would have taken place.

This is what happens when you rush to get to power and loose foresight of what you stand for. A once very democratic party has been reduced to thuggery and kaponyalism. This is indeed surprising that only now that UPND has joined with PF that such violence is exhibited, We are for change, but we seek that this pact parties, begin to caution each other, so that this violent culture be assesed fully….this is a begining of what is yet to come, watch closely people, be careful, some our neighbouring countries have been at war at some point, we do not want that in Zambia. Abash violence from all political parties!
Bravo Pact!!!!!!!!!!! PF/UPND is on the fire. Who said this pact will never work out. Watch out MMD(Movement for Malilo Party). This party can only be supported by those directly fastening their stomachs.
Lumba, ba kapeba mudididi !!!! PACT Lets kick ba Mwadya Mweka Daddy out. It is Zwaaaa time.
#13 Mike. I bet Bootlicker will be pleased because his mandingo is only a quarter of intambo yachikwepe in size. But then again why are you Bootlicker saying these things about yourself? Cheap propaganda! Turn round and say it`s people from the pact? I see!
#1 Kaponya, I totally agree with you that there is NO need for people to engage in politics of violence or insults if our democracy is to mature and be an example to other countries. If we are to disagree let it be on policies and that should not revert people to go for other peoples throats we are not benefiting nothing from this violence which is being brought in our politics. The Police should also be proactive on those people who are fermenting violence and lock them up no matter to which political party they belong to. Let the best candidate win though I am not supporting MMD.
It very easy to undo the MMD strategy in Solwezi Central By Elections. The likes of James “Jame” Katoka and team have failed pipo. Solwezi despite producing more than half of the country’s copper for export has not seen any meaningful development. There no infrastructure to talk about. For the past ten yrs GRZ has literary been raping the province. Its like the duriong the Federal era where all Zambian’s copper revenues where taken out to develop Salisbury now Harare. The GRZ has failed to put up dual carriage way between Solwezi and Chingola. North Western Rail Company was not awarded the contract to put up njanji and the Chinese coy is no where to be seen. Let us kick out MMD on developmental issues not violence and insults. There is much to bring up and win voters hearts in…
Lets face it. This will be a 50-50 affair. But the MMD (govt) has a slight advantage of incubance (sp) and can pour huge resources in this bye election. Kafulafuta will be dice for MMD if general Mpombo stands on the PACT. Namwala, is for the PACT whatever happens.
I HOPE MMD WILL BE TAUGHT A LESSON IF THEY LOOSE THE SOLWEZI CENTRAL BYELECTIN
mmd cant lose because of what bloggers feel. This will be another Chitambo for yo. Just wait and see….pact will be finished.
Either we like it or not african politics are all dirt infact not only africe, even the states how ws bush voted in, pipo we have to be cafreful on hw we deifne what dirt is interms of politics………. and other associations. in politic u dont win u conquer your enermy……..
the UK and US govments are Killing pipo in Afgan and Iraq who is blaming that, they are also busy supplying guns and ammunitions in all wartorn countries but no one is blaming this, and the best as for us Zambians is to blame our politicians when they get dirt, think again, am no advocating for violence as dirt polictics may avoid voilence if well handled..
for any political party to win it has to play dirt but avoid voilence, that is what makes the difference btwn african and other continents………..
violence is detrimental to every progressive human endeavours. let every mind of progressive people shun this bad thing
After reading the paper the digs deeper (The POST) it seems to me like the pact is going to win the election just have a look at the pictures. LT these days seems to be MMD. so i just read for comparison just like i do for daily mail and Times of Zambia. Any how lets see. Sometimes its like when you read the synoptic gospels you seach also for what is missing in the other paper and judge for yourslef what it could be.
# 23 Kabwe, I don’t agree with you that politics is dirt as you are putting it. What make it dirt are the people whom we put in front those that don’t see that politics revolves around development of a country and not on personalities. And we should stop thinking that because we are in Africa then we have to insult and be violent in the name of politics. If we spend all that time fighting and insulting each other when are we going to have time to develop our country fellow Zambian? So please STOP playing dirt and being violent that will not take us any where.
#23 You forgot to mention that the UK gives Zambia £37million per year! You Hypocrite!
MMD Chief Bootlicker eat now before 2011, you will be kicked out of the embassy, I have just discovered a Scandal. There is a scandal. WHY IS IT THAT ALL MMD SUPPORTERS HAVE POT-BELLIES! Check this pic. of MMD bootlicker.
Chicago I agree with you, this MMD CHIEF BOOTLICKER SOON WILL BE PACKING GOING BACK TO ZAMBIA. EVEN AT THE EMBASSY HERE IN SOUTH AFRICA THEY ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING. THEY JUST MOVE UP AND DOWN IN THE BUILDINGS NAMA SUITS AYABULA UKUCHISA AYOBAFUMINENAYO KU ZAMBIA. UBUTUTU BA ZAMBIAN EMBASSY
Looking at the pictures in the Post today, the MMD candidate looks defeated even before the election has taken place! His Thoughts?: “Yangu tata wandi ine. What have i gotten myself into?”
MMD, the writing is on the wall for you! Simply put, We are sick and tired of MMD!!
# 30..Mudala Ba Moze, you are very right, Chifita does not know what to do next. I think right now he is sick. It is so mind-tantalizing that the PACT could attract such big crowd chanting we want change, we want change, we want chenge. Yaba, nagu ni ine kuti natutuma sana ati it has never happened in the history of Solwezi. ya ya ya……Obama has brought change to the whole world. ITS WE WANT CHANGE, YES WE CAN.
#31. what change has Obama brought?
Yep! may the better man win…but again I bemourn the violence being pepetrated by cadres in Solwezi. Bola panshi bane.
I beg the corrupt ECZ not to try any nonsense, let the electorate choose who they want to represent them in parley.
Opposition parties should not go to sleep. Please remain vigilant. As for MMD please fair play. No cards Oh! I beg
#31 Kambongolo
If Obama plans to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq and bring peace to the region, then why has he gone back on his promise and ensured that tens of thousands of U.S. troops will remain in the country?
If Obama is so deserving of being recognized for his efforts towards peace, then why has he intensified the Bush-era missile drone attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan that have killed and injured countless innocent civilians?
If MMD loose the the Solwezi seat they should as well start preparing for an exit in 2011. The only problem we have at hand is how to handle VJ and ECZ. If these two are not properly handled we might have a reapetation of what happened in 2001, 2006 and the last election and the suffering of the Zambian people go on and on.
Solwezi , solwezi, Please vote wisely.Let us kick the MMD from this part of Zambia. #35 don’t worry these guys will be handled very well in 2011. What goes round comes round and this will happen. God help us.
ba chapwa naimwe, same way the US & Obama wudnt know the nitty gritty workings of our i.d.i.o.t.i.c political system is the same way we outsiders cant know how their policies in the states cut. political promises are never static. they have to change with circumstance so even if obama said that stuff and didnt stick to it, name any former american president who stuck rigidly to campaign promises no matter the circumstance. i see u’ve just jumped on the bandwagon of Obama haters which mostly are dull americans
Can somebody please enlighten me what VJ was doing in China with returning officers.
I am praying that MMD loses. MMD deserves a big humiliation.
#31 Akulu Kambongolo namvela mushe.. Naine ninga tutume alume.. We want change! yes we can! Viva PACT!
#34 Chapwa. Obama ninani?? Choka pano u ka ende pa http://www.politicalticker.cnn.com and air your Obama views there with your fellow Americans there. Ifwe pano tule debater ama issues ya ku bond pa Zed. Read “Lusaka Times.com”. It seems naubaila.

MMD is panicking inn Solwezi Central and the police is not helping the situation
