Referee Leah Namukonde put to rest

Scores of mourners from all walks of life on Saturday turned up pay their last respects to FIFA referee Leah Namukonde who has been put to rest in Luanshya.

Namukonde, a Luanshya teacher, died on Monday at Ndola Hospital after sustaining injuries in a road accident at the weekend.

Mourners gathered at the United Church of Zambia in Luanshya for the funeral service before proceeding to Mikomfwa Cemetery for burial.

A somber mood punctuated by wailing characterised the funeral procession.

Several football referees, administrators, coaches, players and fans were in attendance.

“Her demise has robbed Zambia and FIFA in general a young lady who was destined for major tournaments in the World,” Kamfinsa referee Milton Mweemba said.

Namukonde had been in the intensive care unit prior to her death.

Namukonde recently officiated at the 2018 COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa.

She joined the elite FIFA referees panel in 2016.
