Gender-based violence worries government

A government official in Choma district has expressed
concern at the increasing cases of gender-based violence perpetrated
mainly against the girl-children.

Opening a two days workshop organized by the Women and Law
in Southern Africa in Choma today, District Administrative Officer, Vincent Sikanyeela, said government is worried at the violations of rights of the girl child.

Mr Sikanyeela said the escalating incidents of parents having sex with
their own biological children presents many challenges in addressing
gender based violence.

He commended the Women and Law in Southern Africa for mounting a
sensitization campaign against gender based violence especially in rural
areas.

Speaking earlier, Women and Law in Southern Africa legal officer, Namucana
Mushabati, said some customs and beliefs were perpetuating gender based
violence.

Ms Mushabati observed that the vice has now become a cross-cutting issue requiring a multi-sectoral intervention.

She said gender-based violence is not only affecting women and children
but also men.

Ms Mushabati disclosed that Choma district was leading in cases of gender
based violence.

Civil society organisations and government departments, including the
Judiciary, are attending the two days workshop being held at Choma Hotel.

  1. what happens after they leave this workshop with their allowances? rapists, defilers, molestors are sicko’s who need to be locked up. so what if govt is worried let them act and act now.

  2. Government is not there to “worry”, it is there to ACT. I mean how useless can you get?

  3. #3 Sony Eric excellent point – if they only worry about the challenges, who do they expect to act for them? Donors?
