President Edgar Lungu has called on the Zambia Correctional Service to continue with its agro production which is making the service self-sustaining.
Speaking when he swore in Chisela Chileshe as Correctional Service Commissioner General, President Lungu noted that the service has made significant progress in agro production and diversification which needs to be sustained.
The President has also tasked Dr. Chileshe to also focus on improving the welfare of inmates through upgrading infrastructure in the service.
He said incarceration does not mean loss of human dignity.
President Lungu added that while Zambia’s correctional facilities have improved since 2011, more still needs to be done.
Dr. Chileshe was Deputy Commissioner General of Administration and Finance prior to his appointment on November 9th, 2018 to replace Percy Chato.
And Dr. Chileshe has told ZNBC News in an interview that he will work hard with his team to build on what his predecessor started.
He said it is possible for the 21-thousand 6-hundred inmates to have well balanced meals from their hard work in the various farms belonging to the correctional service.
Dr. Chileshe added that the service has already been given 4 point 6 million dollars by the World Bank to improve its irrigation system.
He said the service is also now venturing into livestock and making its farms independent to enhance production levels.
It is in the interest of the current PF government to ensure prison conditions are improved because it will be the home of most of these leaders. Edgar Lungu is safe because we do not tend to jail our presidents but the following will likely face the law;
