Rains force contractor to suspend Kitwe road works

Road construction works in Kitwe district have been suspended because of the onset of the rain season, Kitwe City Council (KCC) Public Relations Manager Roy Kuseka has disclosed.

ZANIS reports that the contractor engaged by government to work on the 56 kilometres (km) stretch has withdrawn labour and machinery from the site.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Kuseka said out of the total 56 kilometre contract awarded, only 11 km is remaining for the projected to be completed.

Mr. Kuseka said the contractor is expected to recommence works in April 2019.

He named the roads that have been worked on in the district as Garneton, Kawama, Kwacha, Kazembe, Oxford/Nyerere and Bangweulu.

Mr. Kuseka stated that the scope of works include walkways, drainages, street lights of 20 km coverage and traffic lights.

He said the contractor will only undertake installation of road signage, speed humps and zebra crossings upon completion of construction works.

Meanwhile, Kitwe City Council has procured bitumen and a compactor at a total cost of K200, 000.

Mr. Kuseka said this is to enable the council to continue on its routine roads maintenance in the district.

He added that the council has prioritized maintenance of drainages because they are a life support to the roads.

  1. I wonder why so many road projects start in rain season other than dry season

  2. RDA is not doing any good to contractors by signing the contracts in rain season . What is really going on? When they see how bad the roads have become during the rain season that’s when they want to cool down the people by pushing a contractor to move on site. Seriously are we doing any good to ourselves when we live in Zambia and we know our seasons . Why are we going back wards instead of going forward.

  3. Only 11km of kitwe roads remaining, are you crazy Kitwe Council? Most of the city’s roads remain an eyesore! Is Kazembe road Kitwe?

    • I was in Kitwe last month. There are literally no roads in all the townships. You can drive on A few roads in town but even where there’s tarmac it’s a bumpy ride. You need a tractor to get around Kitwe the hub of the copper belt.

  4. Can’t live in that decayed so called “city of kitwe”, bloody eyesore I will stick to chingola and I hope the investors follow my example!

  5. Where were they during the dry season? It’s amazing how they act like the rain season has taken them by surprise!

  6. Lundazi road has been washed away at a section near Lumezi due to poor works. Lundazi district cut off from Chipata and this will affect distribution of farming inputs and general travel by the public

  7. Very sad for Zambia: It is every where. Ba MP Come and see Kitwe without fear or favou how the
Town Centre kwati catapillar yalelepuka umushishi. Shame to councillors of KCC.

  8. ignore whatever statements have been made here the man is JUST JOKING COS.HIS NAME IS ” KUSEKA” SO HE IS JUST JOKING OR LAUGHING
