21 remandees have escaped from lawful custody in Mambwe District of Eastern Province.

On 26th December, 2018, 21 Remandees were taken from Namuseche Correctional Centre to attend a Mobile Court at Mambwe District and on the 28th December,2018, between 02:00 hours to 03:00 hours, the 21 Remandees whilst acting together managed to remove the burglar bars from the window of the cell belonging to the Department of National Parks and Wild Life Police cell, using an arc saw blade and escaped from the lawful custody.

Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson Nephas Chifuta who confirmed the development said the Department of National Parks and Wild Life working with the Zambia Police Service have since managed to re-arrest three Remandees while 19 others are still on the run.

Mr. Chifuta said of the 21 remandees, 11 were arrested and charged for Wild Life related offences, four for General Theft, two for Defilement, one for Motor Vehicle theft, one for Burglary and Theft and one for use of insulting language.

Mr. Chifuta has since appealed to relatives of the escapees and members of the public to report to the Police anyone seen in their vicinity, and any suspicious individuals idling about.

He said these are dangerous criminals who should be made to face the law and who so ever is harbouring or providing any form of assistance to them is doing so at a disservice to the general public.

    • , four for General Theft, two for Defilement, one for Motor Vehicle theft, one for Burglary and Theft .

These are only ones who should be in prison, while the rest can be attending there cases while coming from their homes. Why do we like congesting prisons unnecessarily.

    • Now even that one who went in for insulting language has been turned into a hardcore criminal by the grand criminals he has met in prison.

    • So much injustice in this world, I read on BBC about a young lady who was arrested for wearing a mini skirt in Lusaka and apparently she will be attending court on the 14th of January, why Lsk Times havent run this story is a dissapointment. First of all we the people are tired of outdated laws just look at the charges these chaps faced- insulting in public for heavens sake, also terrible prison and holding cell conditions force these chaps to escape. The fact that 21 escaped shows that no one monitored them for hours, what if one of the prisoners was getting attacked by the others as often happens, what if they fell sick, needed water to drink etc these are humans too, mean while we have a Minister of Home Affairs who says no one is above the Law, to keep people as animals is a crime and…

    • Mean while we have a Minister of Home Affairs who says no one is above the Law, to keep people as animals is a crime and the ones guilty of this are liable and should also face the Law.

  1. In these days of improved technology and communication, it is foolish to escape from custody. All these will be found and they will receive an additional sentence.

  2. What are their names? Do you even have pictures to be published? How can the public help with no information to assist identify the criminals ? How is someone jailed for using insulting language a dangerous criminal?

  3. Ark and hack are completely different things. For example, it is arc welding , hack saw, etc. Such careless writing isn’t good for our kids. Switch on, LT!

    • Dont encourage kids to be visiting some of these rated sites.

What can kids learn cardre infested sites full of vulgar language

  4. What is insulting language ? Dick head.
These people are running from police filth. Ifiko mu police cell.
