Zesco, Buffaloes Stutter To Round One

Share

Zesco United and Green Buffaloes today did enough to both hobble to the first rounds of the Africa Champions League and Confederations Cups respectively.

Zesco drew 0-0 against URA to qualify 2-0 on aggregate to the first round in a poor display of football that should give Wedson Nyirenda some serious food for thought before facing 2007 Africa Champions League semifinalist Al Hilal of Sudan at the end of this month.

The match was so poor that midfielder Rainford Kalaba was substituted in the 40th minute and his replacement Jonah Sakuwaha was equally poor throughout his time on the pitch-an epitome of Zesco’s performance this afternoon at the Trade Fair Ground in Ndola.

Meanwhile, URA enjoyed a good spell for 12 minutes after the hour-mark but some poor shooting let them down.

Zesco only briefly sparked to life after on-loan striker Signs Chibambo from demoited Nakambala Leopards came on in the 72nd minute for misfiring striker Enoch Sakala who was awful throughout.

Only some tight marking prevented Chibambo from getting on the score sheet before also fading in the last four minutes of the match.

And at Nkoloma stadium in Lusaka, it took Buffaloes until the last 16 minutes of their match against Chipukizi of Zanzibar to get their two goals of the game.

Midfielder William Njobvu put Buffaloes ahead in the 74th minute before Reuben Tembo made it 2-0 in the 83rd minute.

Buffaloes qualify to the first round of the Confederations Cup 7-0 on aggregate.

They will face either Highlanders of Zimbabwe or Ferrivario Nampula of Mozambique with the former leading 3-0 at home from their first leg.

  1. Its good you have qualifued but please ZESCO put your house in order with with your strikers. The competition does not get easy at each level but stiffer. Buffoloes did well to win more goals in Zanzibar but they should also be more prepared to face tougher oppenents because that is when the real test comes in.
Congratulations to you BOTH. Viva Zambia!!

  2. Viva “No Pressure” Chingangu for besting that Ghanian boy. Chingangu ati “I was taking it slowly slowly because I know he wouldn’t go to round 12”

    Viva Chingangu Viva Zambia

  3. congrats to buffaloes & zesco for making it to 2nd round of their respective competition.I want to urge both teams to prepare adequately if they are to make it to the group stage of the competition.

  4. Here are the latest poll in the FAZ Presidency according to the Internet Polls conducted by ZambiaFootballblog.com

    Kalusha Bwalya Leads with 60%
    Hanif Adam 26%
    Teddy Mulonga 13%

There is a margin of error of 3 with a standard devuation of 1.Kalusha Bwalya is within stands a better chance if the polls continue to go in his favor in the next few weeks.

  5. #4 no offence you must not be serious to consider those polls. Its not like the people voting in those will actually vote during the FAZ AGM. The problem is you guys from the outside who dont know what happens in football circles think Kalu is a great guy but the guys who actually vote do.Trust me you will be shocked come March 29.

  7. I agree with you mwiche, people think kalu is an angel but i believe he is one of the most selfish people in football circles. everything he does is about himself. if i were on eof the delegates, i would rather vote Adams or Mulonga. Kalu wants to move up the ladder so quickly. About Zesco and Buffaloes, i think this is the end of the road for them. i dont see them making it to the group stages…. anyway good luck to them

  8. Good analysis by #7 Kay. I have nothing against Kalusha. The problem is that the man wants to be everything at the same time. I dont know what he wants. This is the guy stood as COSAFA president but was beaten. He even applied for the Zimbabwe coaching job but was not taken. If you want Zambian football to be in problems, vote Kalu.
Once Zambian clubs start meeting west and north african clubs, that will be the end for them. I dont want to sound pessimistic, but thats the truth.

  9. Imew guys lekani ba Kalu, let him fail eh! am tired of Mulonga, what else does he do . Let Kalu take over. If he fails thats it, i know we dont need trial or error but Hanif isntr a good choice either.

  10. you fools when are u going to have faith in yo teams?
u are zambians but u behave as if u are not dont pretend
to be something else, zambian football needs yo support
improve todont be negative always.zesco and gbfc will go
    along way.
