Herve Renard has given his early verdict of Zambia after digesting the teams 3-0 win over Botswana in last Saturdays CHAN qualifier.
The 39-year-old Frenchman says he is not at all pleased with what he has seen so far and that he would be cracking the whip after Zambia’s opening 2010 World/Africa Cup qualifier against Togo in Accra, Ghana on May 31.
“They need to show me that they are proud that they want to wear the shirt of the national team,” Renard said before the left for Libya today to play a friendly on Wednesday in Tripoli.
“After watching the team against Botswana and in a friendly (Against City of Lusaka) I was not very satisfied with all the players.
“And to be fair with you, some of them have to show me that they want to stay in the team.”
Renard said the team he was taking in his first three matches in charge was not his selection and changes should be expected when the squad returns from the Togo clash.
He added that the first major changes would come in defence.
“It wouldn’t be a surprise for you if I told you that the defence is not good,” said Renard.
“I need to find new defenders because against Botswana they were not good.”
Renard will have two friendly games prior to facing Togo to make sure he gets it right the first time before facing Togo.
After playing Libya on Wednesday, Zambia travel to Teheran on May 23 to face Iran in another friendly on Sunday, May 25.
The team will later depart Iran on May 27 and head for Accra ahead of their Group 11 opener against Togo.
Team for Libya Friendly
Goalkeepers: Kalililo Kakonje (Amazulu, South Africa), Mike Poto (Green Buffaloes)

Midfielders:Rainford Kalaba , Lottie Phiri (Both Zesco United), Chiwanki Liyainga, Judge Mkandawire (Both Young Arrows). Kennedy Mudenda, Francis Kasonde (Both Power Dynamos), Sebastian Mwansa (Green Buffaloes)
Strikers: Emmanuel Mayuka (Kabwe Warriors), Given Singuluma (Bay United, South Africa)
That is what you will be paid for bwana. We want results.
HH has been dropped! That is really not good.
Where is Roger Kola???
Kola & Stophira Sunza aren’t there either, but i think it’s because they are playing for the Under 20.
I hope he will give a chance to players such moses sichone and Sinkala.
thats if they are in form
renard our players are too playful,so please we want talented players.displine and not like tana who is roarming in nchanga north with his prador seeking for slats and beer only.
walasa tana is busy stealing some pipo`s wifes in chingola and he is drinking excessively. He is userfull but useless chap!
Renard is talking about cracking the whip, I only hope his employers don’t crack the whip on his backside! It is a well known fact in Zambia that the coach isn’t always the one to choose who plays in the national team. There are people in FAZ who have ‘shares’ in players and it is in their interests to get them transfers.
Also, I hope the fact that Adams went up against Kalu isn’t the reason why Himoonde has been dropped again! I have heard that Mbesuma is in the squad to play Togo, if true that is very worrying.
Sounds like you know what you are talking about Coach Renard. Please, we have heard a lot of rhetoric, but this time around we demand results. Whatever the team selection and who did it, we expect a good result in Ghana against Togo for the current fact is that you, Herve Renard, are coach now.
No excuses, please do your job right from this start!
I think this guy will deliver,I like the culture of frank talk, call a spade a spade.Zambian players lack self confidence, national pride, motivation and direction. From the above article ,I think the situation will be rectified.
Alot of our players are not physically fit altough skillfull.I hope the new pyhsical trainer will bring in a new physical regime.
if they want a solid defender, call up Nyambe Mulenga, unfortunately he played little in the U-20 World Cup (because of red cards) but give him a look for the senior team.
Physical fitness is one issue that must be attended to at club level, individual level and not national team level.physical fitness calls for alot of things,of which diet is also key
Nyambe has potential, maybe he is being sidelined because of his name
What fascinates me about England National Team is the desire and passion the players have in being selected and wearing their national colours.I support Renard in inspiring our lads to be passionate and realise how fortunate they are to play for the national team.Comparing the passion of players like Jericho Shinde,Makinka,Efford Chabala,John Soko,Godfrey Chitalu,Zoom Ndhlovu to the players of nowadays like Sichone and company, there`s much left to be desired.
#16 You are right and so is the new coach. Players of today bali temwisha indalama too much, they always want more money even before they play. Beat the big teams first and will come cause your demands will be justified. I think Renard knows who is going to drop and he is right to point at the defence, he say these guys at AFCON, but I just do know where he is going to look for replacement due the short period of time. Maybe he should consider including Edwin Phiri and Misheck Lungu as both are doing fine at their clubs

Choma1 – forgive my ignorance, but why would Nyambe be sidelined because of his name?
and whatever the reason, if its holding the squad back from a potential impact player, that is a big problem right there.
these players of ours are too small such that they are defeated by the size of the west african players, how on earth would feature in the same team short and small chaps like, kalaba, njovu, clifford, hachilensa. let them balance as phsical stature of players matters on the pitch, the boys a natural good an skilfully ok but size BABA!
#20, size is important, but they need sound salaries so that they can buy good food.
I AGREE WIT U #21 ALL THE WAY!! Giv them a proper diet or sumthin. But Isaac Chansa was too Fat during the AFCON games mwe he couldnt even contest for the ball another mbesuma in da makin im afraid.anyway to make my point we need solid tall defenders in the back plus we need more strong upfront Sweepers like Chris Katongo players like Jacob Mulenga are good for strikers as well.Did u all obverse the way he marshalled the front when we played South Africa? he pretty much intimated the south africans in that game.
Yeah, I like the fact that the coach has no confidence in our defense. After allowing 5 goals against cameroon that is not a defense we can take to the world, some of those boys should have retired from playing in the national team for causing Zambia so much embarrassment. We certainly need fresh legs in the back. The midfield looks good, although the coach should give Chivuta a chance. My other concern is finding a striking partner for Chris Katongo. J. Mulenga’s goal ratio is very poor it sacks that he is the only active striker at the moment. He is not a natural goal scorer, Chi Mbesuma needs to work hard, bring him back ku Luanshya & Roan United maybe kuti cha salupka!
Useless comments – noen of you have kicked a ball in your lives to warrant this! Challenge me!
Katongo with J. Mulenga would off-set each rather nicely, but I agree Mulenga’s ratio is poor. Chamanga has been playing really well in the league lately, have him pair up with ‘Tsunami’ upfront, and it could end up with goals galore.
I think boys like R.Kolala,E.Mayuka should be given an opportunity to play along side C.Katongo i know the have a lot to learn but the need to be given opportunities to grow.I like Kolala’s size.I agree with BuzzEd #23 Jacob needs to work on his finishing although he is important to the team cos of his size and he keeps defenders busy.I like his work rate also.
Iam just surprised Himoonde has been dropped. To me he and Chintu formed a strong partnership in the final fcon Game againist Egypt unlike the Mwanza/Nketani one. I hope the coach will give that boy a chance
TURKISH Bursaspor have terminated the contract of Zambia striker Collins Mbesuma.
A source said in Lusaka yesterday that Mbesuma was declared surplus to the Bursaspor’s requirement following a nagging knee injury which kept him out of action since he joined to the club last year.
The former Roan United striker has since been ruled out of the team that will face Iran on Sunday after playing Libya tomorrow in another friendly.
The source, who could not give details on why Mbesuma’s contract was terminated, said the player was now arranging travel arrangements for his return to Zambia.
Mbesuma set the South African Premier League Soccer (PSL) on fire in 2004 with his prolific goal-s
whatever happened to fwayo tembo? ever since he went to Etoile du Sahel it seems like the national teams (U-20, u-23 and senior) have forgotten about him.. Tunisian football is of one of the highest standards in Africa and i’m sure Fwayo is improving his game immensely there..
Welcome back home NTOFONTOFO. Roan United is waiting for you.
Mbesuma yalika nakabili! The man should consider wrestling!
Ifyo yaba bola yamiti. Balapwa bwangu
Oh, FAT BOY, FAT BOY, FAT BOY, FAT BOY MBESUMA!!! Is this what I hear true. We thought you would put the name of our town on the World Map, alas, we were delusional. Why have thou fallen like that O’ FAT BOY. You are only in your mid twenties. Surely you can turn around things. Surely you have to come back to Luanshya so that we feed you the proper food we used to give you so that you lose that TAG of FAT BOY and help us win the KCM League in 2009. At Roan we indeed waiting for you.
It was always was going to be this way, we have to build from the back. Let the offense take care of itself. Don’t compromise Mr. Renard.
If what you guys are saying about Tana is true then can somebody intervene. For God’s sake we are tired of hearing Govt being accused of abandoning former national heroes after they blow their Money. e.g Litana, The Late Lotie Mwale etc etc etc
UNFORTUNATELY WHAT IS BEING SAID ABOUT TANA IS NOTHING ELSE BUT THE TRUTH…..LOOKS LIKE THE BROTHER HAS LOST THE LOVE FOR FOOTBALL & FOUND THAT OF BEER & LADIES!!!!SAD INDEED
To those of you on the inside, why did Mbesuma leave Maritimo in Portugal? It seemed to me like he was starting to get his footing at that club! I hope he has good advisors and a humble personality to start over unless that knee injury has all but ruled him out of football. This raises another issue. Are you telling me that no one monitors our foreign based players to determine who is active and who is not?
Himonde, kola, clifford recalled. That is good news Mr Coach.
let him make his own team, the current ones are all failures.
Mbesuma story sad, butit has to do with his illetracy, ala kwena bwafya, elyo Tana nawo what is he thinking? He thinks he played for Madrid, Man utd, Juve or Bayern. He is really a let down, anyway let him chase women cause it is only himself who knows his status
The new coach has not yet selected his own team, but he will do that after the Iran game and beleive me u many guys will be out. HH, Clifford, Mayuka and Kola will make the team while Mbesuma will be dropped. Felix Sunzu should be included in the team as well as Edwin Phiri, that is my view. Sunzu is heading for France after one season in Tunisia
Agree with Justice. I think we should also take into consideration, Renard just arrived in the country, he has very little knowledge of the players at the moment. The friendly games in Lusaka were hardly enough to make a decision on squad selection. It is unfortunate that the FAZ had waited so close to the beginning of qualifying to choose a new coach, there is very little time for him to feel out the squad and understand the players/system. But the whole notion of the article, that he says changes are coming, is very reassuring. I will give him the benefit of the doubt in these first few games, for now.
mbesuma shudnt have left the south african soil so quick.he was a star and should have established himself more by staying another season.what a waste sure.from making history in the south african league to being dropped from a team and considered excess baggage.shame, the guy was a real hero down south.
I agree with #43, thats what Ted Dumitru advised. He stressed that Mbesuma was not yet ready for Europe. He needed another season in SA league as he was still raw. He should have atleast gone to Al Ahly (Egypt) who wanted him.
Ladies and Gentlemen, You can get the best coach in world to Coach for our team and yield no good results.
I am a professional Coach in the USA and I know what it takes to build a great atheletes. Its almost impossible to have a great team of 11. There maybe few on the team that are committed.
I have been coaching for a number of years and no matter what great of a coach you are, you only responsible for small percentage in the success of a player. Most of it comes from the players. I wonder when I hear all these call about getting a coach and so forth.
We have been in this business for a while to know what it takes to build players or formidable teams. “die a liltle” D liwew
FAZ needs to talk to the guy. he has been a very patriotic guy when it came to playing for the national team. He is still a valuable guy. It is unfortunate to hear such stories about him with women and beer. He should know better. He is a professional guy. Why BA Tana?. Honor your career. Ba FAZ, please talk to him. he still has got alot to offer to the team and the nation. God bless you all.

I hear all the stories about TANA with his liking for beer and women. Well, it is not a good story to hear about and especially concerning a guy like him. He should know better. He has been there for sometime. But i think it is also good that FAZ should take interest in the matter. They should talk to him and advise him. He Tana, has been a very patrotic guy when it came to playing for the national team. We should not let finish himeslf like that. That guy still has got a lot to offer especially in the Defence line. Ba FAZ please talk to the guy. Otherwise he is a good guy and experienced
i,m very impressed with our coach.all the best mr coach
