The Electoral Commission of Zambia has announced that 15 local government candidates who applied to stand in the August 12, 2021 general and presidential elections as ward councilors have gone through unopposed.
And the commission says fresh nominations for four parliamentary seats which were affected by resignation and deaths will take place on July 12, 2021.
The affected constituencies include Kasenengwa in Eastern province, Lusaka Central, Chawama and Mandevu in Lusaka provinces.
ZANIS reports that ECZ Counsel Bob Musenga disclosed during a media briefing in Dubai today that two of the incidents under the parliamentary seats involved the resignation of candidates and the two were deaths.
Mr. Musenga stated that as in line with provisions of the law, it is mandatory that the commission holds fresh nominations which will take place on July 12, 2021 as this will be before the August 12 polls.
He disclosed that the commission will also hold fresh nominations in four wards that were affected by deaths and resignations namely Matanda ward in Kafue constituency, Mushili in Bwana Mukubwa constituency, Kabwale in Kapiri Mposhi and Ichinga in Chinsali constituencies.
The commission named some of the local government seats which have gone unopposed amongst the 15 as being Itumbwe in Keembe constituency, Chiniki in Mkushi South, Kabansa in Machinga and Nakambala in Mazabuka central.

ECZ or Concourt needs to answer the question: What happens if a Presidential Candidate withdraws or resigns on 11th August 2021? Does ECZ postpone the Presidential Election to a future date after the Ballot Papers have been printed? Is there no window period during which a Candidate can withdraw or resign from the Race? If I am a Candidate and decides to withdraw from the Electoral Race for whatever reason why should the Elections be Cancelled for those who want to continue with the Race? Why is Mpulungu and Monze Central not on the list of Nominations? ECZ is lacking consistency and transparency in handling these Cancellations and Nominations. This is already affecting the Credibility of this Election. What happened to the Court Petitions on Mpulungu,Lusaka Central and Monze Central?…
Both PF and UPND have some seats unopposed and it shows a weakness in their Secretaries General. The adoption tactics employed by both Parties which are the frontrunners just yielded an unprecedented number of independent candidates. This is also a weakness on their Secretariats
Why hold new nominations in the stated constituencies and wards they should have just left the political parties concerned file in papers to ECZ to field new candidates rather than starting the process all over gain. SUppose the number of aspiring andiadtes increased or reduced in the said places, what will ECZ do?
