The University of Zambia Students Union UNZASU has expressed regret for sending representatives to the National constitution conference.

UNZASU outgoing committee member Kelvin Chitala says the whole process fundamentally damaged and compromised the image of UNZASU before the eyes of the national and international community.

In a statement to QFM radio, Chitala observed that it is unfortunate that tax payer’s money was criminally used to pay the NCC delegates who did not even yield any positive results.

Chitala observes that due to its incompetence, government has reached its dangerous levels as it has made a lot of costly mistakes within a short period of time.

He notes that the failure to reintroduce the windfall taxes, the massive pollution on the Copperbelt, the criminalization of the parallel voting tabulation and the questionable acquittal of second republican president Frederick Chiluba, among others, have been setbacks in the development of the country’s economy.

Chitala says the setback has resulted in the poor delivery of services due to none monitoring of the civil service.

He observes that if government had the interest of the people it would have either used part of the money to sponsor poor students who are facing deregistration due to non-payment of tuition fees at the university, bought drugs and improve the hospitals or even work on the impassable roads.

  1. Posterity will judge the people of Zambia and the millions that where spent on an exercise that has produced a rejected document.

  2. Conman says, I agree with you. If UNZASU is genuinely sorry about the NCC fiasco then they should pay back the money or indeed shut up!!!

  3. The problem with many Zambians is that they glorify leaders be it in government or opposition instead of glorifying God for un-seared thinking and voting.Others their choice of reasonig is determined by how much social and financial bankrupt their past and present position is.THE WORST GROUP OF ZAMBIANS ARE THE ONES WHO USE HATE AND TRIBALISM CARRIED BY WIND/LOUD INSULTING MOUTHS.

  4. If they dont pay back then Zambian people must do the following: For Parliamentarians not vote for them they must be replaces: Students and others who sat on that committee deducation must be made from them on monthly bases: Ife I was president of Zambia I would have such a directive and people of Zambia will support me: Those who cannot afford to pay they have sell their mansions they built using these monies. That is a fair deal

  5. I have just been watching a video about Mr. Reason an innovative Zambia at Soweto market who reinvented and modified the wheelbarrer to suit the Zambian situation and he is no renting to marketiers to pay school fees for his children. He can even employee three people. What an innovative idea. If such people are supported by GRZ they even make bigger things

  6. Leave the students, they can be exempted from paying back. They used the money as bonus allowance to supplement the meagre bursary they get as raw deal from Govt. The people who must pay back are Ministers and MPs, and many others who were drawing huge allowances while receiving a salary at the same time.

UNZASU, I’m interested in knowing your Political inclinations, especially with your dubious President who has been on questionable trips with HERB.

  7. UNZA inasila. It was UNZA during our time. This time standards have been compromised. Every Jim and Jack can go to UNZA. You can even see under-five students at UNZA wondering how they finished school and get accepted to the University.

  8. Not all was lost, as Zambians we have to learn to think independently not to be moved by the wind or mob of politicians. The NCC was fine, but the only problem was that certain articles which were so cardinal to people were not met, e.g the 50%+1 which most Zambians wanted so much, so for the bill not to have passed, I feel it is the responsibility of those who were involved to get back to the drawing board to identify what people really wanted to be included. Even the people who voted against it should be listened to, they could have a reason. It is not just about passing a bill called constitution even if it does not stand the test of time. Tax money was spend on that program, hence what comes out should not be a joke, but of substance.

  9. Rupiah and his MMD don’t listen. His mistakes could have been avoided had he listened to the people.
Lets usher in a PF listening government this year.
Imagine the hell of 5years under Rupiah and William Banda.
Beware of an under 5 tribalist who just want to split the votes of southern province.
VOTE SATA IF YOU WANT CHANGE.

  10. Well it is not enough to issue a regret, if you are really sorry , take the money back. Lead by example, otherwise just shut up and stop wasting our time by talking to the media and focus on your studies, you treasury looters

  11. unza ,unza, what type of rubbish is this that comes from this institution.useless minions, after you chew the money thats when you come up with stupid statements

  12. wise pipo think b4 doing….its a sign of dullness ba unza…u shud have analysed the roadmap and made a proper decision like pf did.

  13. UNZASU failed to use their intellect to judge their participation. That NCC thing was fake from the word go and any right thinking Zambian should have boycotted it. But as many of you have said – hunger-desire-for-more-free-money is such a significant driving force that it crowds out proper judgement. The MMD is suffering from that right now. They cant think of anything new but just to survive so they their money making schemes can continue. So even stupid decisions such as running bus stations by MMD cannot be opposed by their leaders!

Hope we will have new government by the end of this year! It was good the consitution failed. Maybe – just maybe the new govt may for once listen to the ordinary, intelligent and desirous of progress Zambian! GOD Bless Zambia!!

  14. Union leaders are just like that wherever you go. if you chaps went into that with peoples’ interest at heart, you would have joined these MMD consitution making process. I was for the referendum when you guys saw opportunities for money making. Dont regret anything atleast those who opposed have won, though a lot of our money has been wasted.

  15. #12 Typical of what Zambians and reasonable bloggers are against YOUR TRIBALISM AND INSULTING NATIONAL ANTHEM. Dont your inner soul feel troubled and pierced when you propagate tribalism, hate and insults? Asking you to look straight in the eyes of GOD you will definately renounce the evil spirit that makes you comfortable with tribalism, hate and insults.

  16. Though too late it’s better late than never. UNZA acted retrogressively in being coerced into a flawed constitutional making process. RB wanted to rubber stamp this document and use it to his own benefit. Selfishness was displayed by both the government and participants. Shame on the partakers in this grand plunder of the Zambian treasury, it is the greatest failure of any government in Zambian history.

  17. No one shud blogg to defend unza students as if they ar babies….i remember the two unions cbu and unza where against, whoever went there jst snicked out. why is he regreting nonses…..these university students of nowadays who cant even demonstrate what do u expect? Mongu and Mazabuka shooting..even garden shooting….these ar just i.d.i.o.ts.

  18. No. 9, you are correct, UNZA yalipwa beyond redemption, I could not believe my eyes when I went to see my former lecturers last year in the School of Eng. Potholes, brown lawns, rubish all over and in term of academic standards, I am told any jim and Jack with O levels passes are admitted as long as his or her parents can afford to pay for the tuition. In our days, admition was highly competitive and was based purly on academic excellence. Only the cream of the nation found themselves at UNZA regardless of your economic background. And on political matters, we never supported the GOVT in power which is not the case now. It will be suicide to be known as someone supporting the GOVT, ask those chaps we discovered and possesions burn’t and disappeared into exile for some time in 1995.

  19. Mwaiche, just shut up and concentrate on your studies, you have already taken part in chewing tax payer’s money. you should have consulted the catholic church before taking part in that feast, unzasu was so powerful in the 80s and 90s. what has happened now baiche imwe? easily compromised.

  20. unza students vote for leaders whose only ability is fashion consciousness.i ruled unza better than unzasu.pipo are silenced by brown envelops at the expence of unionism.

  21. Advice: dont ever regret anything that made you happy! The allowances kept you all smiles and i wonder if any of you even raised their voices while in the NCC against George Kunda’s KONSTITUUSHOON

  22. Damn’t………………………………………………………………………………………………………:((

  23. The biggest problem we have in Zambia is that many people see injustice and keep quiet. Do nothing. I am sure these UNZASU representatives had smelled a rat from the beginning but were too interested in the loot to start shaking the boat. I have news for you: Justice has a price! In your case you should have been vocal from the start and RISK losing your allowances. That was the price you should have paid. The same applies to all Zambians that see wrong things but do nothing but wait for rigged elections and hope things will change for the better. Keep on dreaming and playing it safe! I assert that progress will not take place in Zambia if selfless individuals are not involved. Those that are ready to bite the bullet, if that what it takes. Good luck and keep on hoping and praying!

  24. Somehow UNZASU is to blame in part for all this nonsense. How in the world would you rally something that has no blessings from the general public? You should have known better the very beginning that this was doomed for failure. We are yet to see what will happen with Zamtel. No official statement has been issued on the position of Zamtel. We know they are underplaying the seriousness of the issue because that will definitely haunt them.

  25. We used to be VIVA consultants! Its good for UNZASU to feel and say sorry but they can do more by paying back, even just a little bit since they are students. They can even donate part of it to some need causes somewhere. They can even organize a car wash for that cause, its about time UNZASU redeemed its name.

  26. Its too late lads to atone for your sins, we’ll accept your apology undeservedly if you promise to only support parties that never partook in the senseless robbery of our scarce resources. Chitala you’re streets more matured than most of these old bandits that collected millions and have no decency of saying sorry for the wrongs. I wish you youngman all the very best as you enter the real world.

  27. I have no words atall, but just feel sorry for mama Zambia. It is all cofusion all over-If it is not William Banda, it is homosex, or George Lips ah

  28. Nomoney was wasted. The exercise and its rejection served to bring out what we do not want so that next time we will do the right thing. Sometimes you have to try more than once to get something right.

  29. On “The University of Zambia Students Union UNZASU has expressed regret for sending representatives to the National constitution conference.

UNZASU outgoing committee member Kelvin Chitala says the whole process fundamentally damaged and compromised the image of UNZASU before the eyes of the national and international community is it outgoing-UNZASU that has regrets of its this Kelvin Chitala in his capacity as a former UNZASU member who s regreting?

To me, the reporter has failed to release the message as it is supposed to be done.

NCC was not at all a failure or waste of national resources because any successive GRZ Administration will surely table the NCC’s work in future to give us Zambians a better Constitution compared to the one Sata/Chiluba gave us in 1996…

  30. Good point Maestro. Matter of fact the demonstrated rejection must be a good sign that for once people have urged their representatives to “REPRESENT” them, as opposed to this practice of dancing to the tune of the executive arm. This hangover from traditional hegemony must come to an end.

  31. Now that you know that you were wrong tell your fellow students to go out there and tell their relatives to vote wisely you have the powers in that place you have people coming from all corners of the country now is the time to do your work and please you are forgiven just do not allow MMD at UNZA agiant!

  32. 38 Kalok and 40 Mwanawakwitu thanks and lets keep the fight. One day, our investiment in NCC and other previous Constituition commissions will pay off because a concerned government will enact a Constitution that will be good enough for us Zambians.

Be blest and vote for the UPND Team to form GRZ Administration this 2011 so that HH and UPND can give us a new Constitution within 90 days of being elected into the Presidency of Zambia office.

  33. Rubbish,i thought as an interllectual you were suppose to be rational. And your wonder as to why i can never vote for HH…………….I.d.i.o.t. why don’t you do us a favor and shut your stinking beak kolwe iwe.

  34. my young comrades Sage Samuwika, the then UNZASU president went to NCC against students wishes….he betrayed us and went their with support from DOSA to enrich himself..those of us who were too vocal debating against NCC were intimidated by DOSA ….shame!!!a lawyer president failed t give us a durable constitution…also a lawyer veep….wat an embarasment….

  35. Chinamba 9.I have heard about such boring stories before.Everyone think their intake was the best.Yu must be foolish.
