15 month old infant drowns in Chongwe

A 15 month old infant of Kakubo Village in Chongwe District has drowned in a shallow well after she slipped into it while she was playing with her friends.

Elder sister to the deceased girl, Sharon Siyanzile confirmed the death of the toddler yesterday.

Ms Siyanzile explained that her young sister drowned around 12: 00 hours while playing near the shallow well with her friends.

She further explained that her young sister wouldn’t have died had her friends’ quickly informed elderly people who were nearby to rescue her.

Ms Siyanzile added that her young sister’s friends instead rushed to inform the toddler’s parents who were far away along the Great East road hence by the time they reached the well, the girl had drowned.

Efforts by her parents and sympathizers to rescue the girl were in vain as she had already died due to water intake and suffocation.

Ms Siyanzile said the body is lying in Chongwe District Mortuary awaiting postmortem and subsequent burial.

  1. ITS VERY SAD, A YOUNG LIFE HAS JUST BEEN LOST AND MY DEEPEST CONDOLANCES TO THE PARENTS AND FAMILY OF THE LATE INNOCENT CHILD. REST IN PEACE MY BABY.

  2. A 15 month old child is too young to be left by herself. Its sad the kid went this way but her parents should be held accountable for their negligent behavior.

Children are not goats that you just let roam the neighborhood. Young children need to be watched all the time!

  3. very ver sad indeed. 47years after political independence, our people are still using wells to draw water for domestic use. They are still using pit latrines and sometimes water is contaminated by sewer. Where has the govt been all these years? Time for change & move the country forward.

  4. 15 months, playing next to a well, my lord, where are the Parents? Bloggers any ideas on how we can help these communities in these Villages? Some Modern extraction of these wells to avoid such accidents. If interested and know you can make a difference, let me know. Will send you contacts that we work on this project, for the good of Zambian poor people. M.H.S.R.P
