Brace for a freezing July-Meteorological Department

The cold weather now being experienced in Zambia will continue and may get worse next month in five provinces and could be
periodically be interspersed with drizzles or light rains.

Zambia Meteorological Department director Jacob Nkomoki said in response to a press query yesterday that five provinces were next
month expected to experience mainly cool to cold temperatures, windy and cloudy to overcast skies which may periodically result into
drizzles or light rains.

The rains which would be associated with ‘Guti’ conditions which were expected to occur in Southern, Lusaka, Central, Eastern and Muchinga Provinces of Zambia.Guti is a cool moist southeasterly airflow which causes cloudy conditions. If this condition becomes well established it results in widespread drizzle and rain in places.

Mr Nkomoki has since advised members of the public to follow daily weather forecasts in print and electronic media to avoid being caught
unaware.

Mr Nkomoki is also Permanent Representative of Zambia to the World Meteorological Organisation.

“As we approach July, the country may experience mainly cool to cold temperatures, windy and cloudy to overcast skies which may periodically result into drizzle or light rains.

“These rains are associated with “GUTI” conditions especially over Southern, Lusaka, Central, Eastern and Muchinga Provinces,” he said.

He said the country was currently in the winter season and it was expected that there would be periodic advection of cool to cold air
from the southern oceans.

“This will result into cool, windy and cloudy weather affecting the eastern half of the country over the next couple of days,” he said.

Mr Nkomoki however said the nights were expected to be cool to cold especially over Western half of Zambia.

He said members of the public should follow the daily weather forecast in print and electronic media so that they were not caught unaware.

He called on parents to ensure their family members especially children were kept warm.

Mr Nkomoki, however, cautioned people to use braziers properly to avoid unnecessary accidents.

  1. It’s like Mr. Nkomoki is issueing wild statements from guess work. A proper forecast should estimate how low the temperatures would fall. And LT, u need to improve. There’s no relationship with that picture to this story. Ba editor, where r u?

  2. There is a relationship imwe.Look at what they are wearing.Poor villagers with winter cloths. Did you see the ‘the spear painting in SA?

  4. please give us the expected temperature drops and not just using relative words like cool to cold. cold might be warm for other races

  5. I didnt know that we have what is called cold temperatures. I thought we have low temperatures which make the atmosphere to be cold.

  6. Ba Met. naimwe we need figures. Ba LT stop giving us hearsay. Why cannot your journalists become proffessional.? It’s all engineering these days, we need quantification/units. Your journalists need to ask for quantities.

  7. The picture is showing people warming themselves against a brazier because of the cold.

  8. Is this article being printed to justify the increased load shedding being experienced by the Zambian population?

  9. lobola should be reduced to allow many to marry to mitigate this cold whether especially tongas  the charge is too high. cases of elopement should be suspended until September and the justice minister should sign a statute  to this effect

  10. Ba #19 Koma mukonda Kulibonesha ta. Whats your point, are you trying to say that in Europe when the temperatures drop to -5 you guys walk around in bikinis? Are those the lies you take home when you visit pwahahahaha! +5 degrees is cold anywhere my dear, i live in Canada which is way colder than Europe but still when temperatures hit +5 we still wear warm clothes. Maybe you live in  a different world but 5 degrees is cold in Zambia since some of you seem to want to pretend like you never lived in Zambia and are surprised at what people there consider cold. By the way its COLD  not CALLED, pa last mwa pwanya.

  11. i remember Jacob Nkomoki using an aerial or antenna to point on the Zambia map. He used to tell us nothing just blabbing from mild to mild with no figures and reasons. im amazed that he has made director at the MET department

  12. Ba LT…ya shani iyi? You mean Nkomoki couldn’t be asked how low the temperatures would drop? And do you edit your articles? Please mwilatusebanya bane!

  13. Which Meteorological Department, do we have the equipment or its just the usual guesses? @25 spot on, @19 kulibonesha ta, how did u end up in Europe and what job do u have when u cant tell the difference b/n ‘cold’ and ‘called’?

  15. Typically Zambian poor reporting No concrete figures: how low will the mercury go? And for how long? No historical facts: will this be Zambia’s coldest winter? What about data of the past let’s say 10 years: I’m sure that can be obtained from meteoroloGical records. What will this weather mean to the citizen especially with loadshedding denying homes heaters? What’s happening to the homeless? Here where I liv these are issues the media bring out whenever they report on adverse weather. All Zambian journalists should go back to school.

  16. #19. For sure kulibonesha taa. Tupak baka muchaya ku chibombo. Just how did you get that interpretation?

  17. Hi, i read your blog from time to time and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a lot of spam remarks? If so how do you prevent it, any plugin or anything you can advise? I get so much lately it’s driving me insane so any assistance is very much appreciated.
