The Ministry of Defence has been challenged to clearly state its stance on the proposed compulsory Skills Training exercise for grade twelve school leavers at Zambia National Service-ZNS training camps.

Copperbelt Minister Davis Mwila said that the Ministry of Defence should be clear on the Skills Training programme other than raising hopes for many unemployed youths.

But Defence Deputy Minister Mwenya Musenge said that it is premature for the Ministry to give its position on the matter. Mr. Musenge said this yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on the Copperbelt Provincial Minister.

Meanwhile, the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has advised government to ensure that school leavers that will be impacted with the various skills through the ZNS programme are empowered financially to start their own businesses.

YALI chairperson Andrew Ntewewe said that the plan by the PF government to introduce skills training is progressive as there have been so much cry for the government to come up with employment creation strategies.

Ntewewe said that the idea is welcome because it will ensure that young people are kept off the street and given skills that are important for self employment.

Speaking to QFM, Ntewewe said that the initiative has shown that the PF government is on the right track in ensuring that young people are self reliant.

Meanwhile, National Restoration Party (NAREP) Lusaka province spokesperson David Chikwanda said that his party will keep an eye on the PF government so that the pronouncement is fulfilled.

Chikwanda said that once implemented, NAREP needs to see consistence and commitment because the move is good.

  1. The youths will end up as vendors on the streets since this PF govt can’t clearly state its stance on both of these vexing issues.

  2. People have misunderstood the ZNS Skill programme to be the same as employment opportunities. I do believe we need skills training, but there is also need to have a job creation plan which I ma afraid does to appear to be in place other than the promise to increase the numbers in the armed forces. We have degree holders, diploma holders, and certificate holders without jobs and the idea that once you take school leavers to skills training then they will have jobs surprises me.

  3. Bwana Minister this is a non starter. The input in this exercise is collosal in terms of finances and absolutely unattainable for an economy like ours. Why can the government not improve on the existing technical/craft colleges? Why start with compulsory when voluntary can be used to pilot this initiative. This needs a lot of consultation and planning. Not Mr. Kambwili’s aprroach of threats. This is not a silver bullet solution for unemployment in Zambia. Grow the economy, let there be industries to absorb the trainees whilst others can be self employed. Otherwise we shall have trained people with no jobs. Then it will be a waste of resources. Mr. Kambwili this is not a stand alone approach. It cut across many ministries for tangible results to be realise

  4. Mr. Kambwili it is not a matter of waking up from a dream and talk about skills training. Identify gaps, prioritise and then direct resources accordingly. Ask yourself these questions How many health workers does the country have, what is the shortfall, how do we bridge this, this applys to teaching, agriculture etc. You think only skills training. This is a fallacy. I would ask the government to put its act together and move as a unified entity in making Zambia a better place for all of us. Why alarm the nation with some program that is in infancy. This (ZNS idea) will not materialise if you give it this hapharzad approach. Get serious with national issues. The president needs to reconstitute his cabinet. This cabinet is a waste of space and resources

THIS IS GOOD OPPOSITION-AGREE WHEN SOMETHING IS BENEFICIAL TO THE ZAMBIANS BUT KEEP THE GRZ IN CHECK. NOT CHITOMBWA’S BITTERNESS OF OPPOSING EVERYTHING GOOD OR BAD.

  6. THIS YOUTH SKILLS TRAINING IDEA CAN WORK PERFECTLY WELL BECAUSE THE INFRASTRUCTURE IS ALREADY THERE IN EACH PROVINCIAL HQs. THIS IDEA IS BOUND TO TURN THOSE CENTERS INTO SERIOUS SKILLS TRAINING CENTRES AND COLLEGES TO EVEN ATTRACT FOREIGN STUDENTS ONCE PROPERLY MANAGED. IF I WERE GBM, THIS IS WHERE I CAN MAKE A LEGACY/NAME BECAUSE THIS IS STRAIGHT FORWARD. ONLY PEOPLE WHO CAN’T THINK FURTHER THAN NSIMA ARE FINDING DIFFICULTIES IN APPREHENDING THE IDEA. THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE TOGETHER WITH THE MINISTRIES OF YOUTH, AND HIGHER EDUCATION CAN WORK HAND-IN-HAND TO REALISE THIS YOUTH PROGRAM DREAM.
