Government Directs Local Authorities to Prioritize Water Projects in CDF Allocation

Government has called on local authorities to prioritize water projects in their allocation of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

‎Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Permanent Secretary, Romas Kamanga, says this will enable people to have access to clean water supply.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on the district administration in Chinsali, Mr Kamanga said water is an essential commodity which must be accessed by everyone.

‎“As you receive CDF, I request that at district level you prioritize water projects because we all know that water is life and sanitation is dignity. As we plan as a district, let us also ensure that a small portion is allocated to water resources,” he said.

‎Mr Kamanga explained that the ministry is working towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number six which seeks to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.

‎He also announced the ministry’s plans to recruit more water officers at district level to improve efficiency in service delivery.

‎Mr Kamanga said this will also enhance the implementation and monitoring of water projects in districts.

‎He further noted that the ministry is also addressing challenges such as accommodation, inadequate drilling equipment and funding, which have hindered service delivery in some districts.

‎Earlier, Acting Chinsali District Commissioner, Brenda Silwembe, raised concerns over operational challenges which are affecting the delivery of water service in the area.

‎Ms Silwembe cited the breakdown of key equipment which has put pressure on officers who are determined to meet community water needs.

‎She appealed to the ministry to provide additional equipment and technical support to improve water access in the district.
