Transparency International Zambia has advised that the country should approach cautiously, the issue of mounting calls to remove immunity from prosecution of former President Rupiah Banda.
TIZ Executive Director Goodwell Lungu said Mr. Banda’s immunity should only be removed after law enforcement agencies establish a prima facie case against the former President.
“We should learn lessons from the prosecution of late Dr. Chiluba. We should avoid adding a lot of emotions to this issue because emotions should cloud out our object judgements,” Mr. Lungu said.
He said the fact that a number of Mr. Banda’s close associates and his family members are facing corruption charges does not mean that he should also be charged.
Mr. Lungu said it is clear in the court of public opinion that Mr. Banda presided over a corrupt administration but that law enforcement should not be swayed by public comments on the matter.
He was speaking last evening when he featured on ZNBC TV’s Sunday Interview programme.
Mr. Lungu also raised concerns over the lack of action on the numerous corruption cases that have happened in the first year of the PF government.
He revealed that TIZ will this week write to government expressing displeasure over the handling of the recent Fertiliser Input Support Programme (FISP) contacts.
“We have a strong feeling that the contracts were corruptly procured and this one just one of the many cases we have observed during the first year of the PF where we feel corruption could have occurred.”
“We raised concerns over the fuel contracts. We are still challenging government to come out clean and tell the people how the contract awarded to Trafigura was handled,” Mr. Lungu said.
Its corruption fighting corruption and corrupt Mmembe as the referee.
It is RB today, 2moro it will be Master of Science (MSc, lol!). Nepotism is another form of corruption!!! The only way to end this is to strengthen the laws (CONSTITUTION). Too much power in the hands of a presidents is a curse rather than a blessing for Zambia: POWER CORRUPTS, & ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY……………..Ndeloleshafye.
‘Remember Lot’s wife.’
Those who are constantly looking back at the past will become bitter as salt and will be entombed in stone.
Move on to the future and let the past take care of itself. ‘Your sins will find you out’ means that the law eventually catches up with wrongdoing.
But that boy who conducted the interview was irritating to say the least. He was interviewing Goodwell but took most of the time talking and interjecting. He also did not understand the technical issues Goodwell raised and kept asking questions which were already answered! Goodwell looked a bit embarrassed that the interviewer was asking the same things that he had already answered. To me Franklyn should never conduct important interviews on TV, it will just expose his incompetence.
What mounting calls??? This useless organization should just fold up because I can’t even ask them to be objective.
To godwell lungu, any article in the post is mounting calls
The ka goodwell or is badwell is uziless. He was asked to explain why he has become quiet under PF wen he was noisy against MMD. He kept on smiling sheepishly and saying “that’s a simple question” but give a shallow response. And where is that hippo-kambwilli-lookalike Lifuka?
Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These TIZ basta.rds waht are they talking about with stinking a.sses
Let us respect the presidency if everyone who leaves office automatically becomes a thief then we are sending wrong signals to the outsiders. Is Zambia full of thieves? Our past leaders and fathers of the nation need to rest quietly regardless of some minor oversights made during their reign. If Zambia disrespect elders we disrespect our nation and ourselves. Where is Ubuntu?
Growing calls to lift RB’s immunity? That is news unless Goodwell knows something in the offing. Thought that people are now preoccupied with police actions?
Who is calling for immunity to be lifted?
What are their names? When and how did they make these “calls”?
This is a manufactured issue by the ruling party.
It’s only one and the only fred mmembe who is “mounting calls”
Zambian politics stink….we are not taking things seriously.
