Western Province Minister John Kufuna, Provincial Deputy Permanent Secretary Mwangala Liomba, Mongu Deputy Mayor Antonio do Santos and ZANIS Deputy Director Wamunyima Muwana sanding during the singing of the Silozi Barotse and South African Anthems

Police in Mongu has nabbed 12 Barotseland activists involved in the tearing of about 500 copies of the Lozi Zambian draft constitution booklets that were torn at the district Administration Office Last week.

Western Province Police Commissioner Fanwell Siandenge confirmed the arrest to ZANIS in Mongu today and named them as Liseli Lingolwe 24, Crispin Mulonda 44, Mushokabanji Wamuwi 24, Mutawa Pumulo 25.Morgan Lubinda 42, Munyinda Munukayumbwa 18, Pumulo Silumesi 26, Mashato Sihanda 36, Robert Kalezhi 34, Wakunguma Mulope 32, Inambao Mwananyabe 26 and Mwiya Aungola 36.

He said the suspects have since been charged with malicious damage and conduct likely to breach peace and are currently detained at Mongu central Prisons remand.

“We have arrested 12 Barotseland activists in connection with the tearing up of the Zambian Constitution last week and they have been charged with malicious damage and conducts likely to breach peace. They have put in Mongu central Prisons remand for security reasons” he said.

And Mr. Siandenge has cautioned youths in Western Province to be aware of selfish people whose aim is to breach peace in the country.

He noted that they are people in the back ground that have a tendency of encouraging the young people to conduct themselves in a manner that is likely to breach peace of the country.

Mr. Siandenge has warned that Police will ensure that anyone found involved in violent behaviour in the province will be prosecuted and brought to book.

“Most of the suspects are youth, we know that these youths are just being used by some old people in the background and we will soon find out and when we do let warn that they will be brought to book” Siandenge said.

Meanwhile, Police in Mongu has launched a manhunt for Barotse Freedom Movement (BFM) Secretary General Mulasikwanda Chazele who has been on the run since yesterday.

Mr. Siandenge said Mulaikwanda together with three other group leaders of the Barotseland independence groups will be charged and prosecuted once found.

On Thursday last week, over 60 irate Barotseland Activist yesterday stormed Mongu District administration Office and tore up over 500 copies of the Silozi draft constitutional booklets stressing that Western Province was no longer of a part of Zambia and hence participation in the ongoing constitution making process was irrelevant.

  1. No jail time necessary. Get them to hand write the 500 copies. That would be cruel and unusual punishment. Once they are done go back and retroactively punish the PF dude who did the same in 2010 at a rally to do the same and by doing so set a great example :)

  2. These so-called activists are attempting to light a fire of which they would have no power  to quench. Is peace too boring for them? Let peace continue people.Just be sensible

  3. Although the 12 disciples have been arrested, I would urge the authorities to be mindful of the open defiance that this matter has reached. I believe on one hand the authourities have brought this about. When the authorities permitted the BNC declarations attended by seniour government officials, they therefore permitted this one defiance, which they are part and parcel of. Thats why, the authorities have now put themselves in a trap without an escape because they themselves allowed the BNC resolutions to be past. Who is now going to accept that the authorities did not give a go ahead for those declarations? You see my point. Therefore open defiance should be expected there as a result of the manner in which the authorities permiited the passing of BNC resolutions. It might be too late now

    • Those resolutions have no blessings from anyone in this modern world. They just trying to champion their Political agenda. Why haven’t their MPs resign up to now? It is part of the resolution that was passed….This is a loughable agenda they have.

  4. This is my first time commenting on this media and in the first place i would like to thank the management of this wonderful platform for such an opportunity to allow many of us to say 1 or 2 things, i thank you.
However, i wish to note that one day Zambians will pay heavily. There are a number of wild comments and un controlled language against each other and against tribes especially Tongas, Lozis & Bembas. This is bad. Don’t forget we are sowing seeds and it may not be now, but surely people harvest what they have sowed. For your own information most of these learders they can easily run into other counties, how about the majority poor Zambians who can’t afford the air ticket? God has remembered Zambia many times but its like we are blind and don’t want see that…………..

    • Very well said. Unfortunately those that like to play tribal verbal games are stuck in an alternate reality where they judge by name and act as though Zambians are made up of individuals from one sole heritage. Those of us who are of mixed heritage or do not think the same ignore them. That said this is online babble. People on the ground are busy interacting, intermarrying and live in the real world :)

  5. Reports reaching my desk are that 5000 copies of the same draft constitution were used as arse wipe in chatulika village in Mpika. Did I hear treason?

  6. @Mwanamfumu – I assure you that I rarely make sense. I would have been ripping papers with the boys and that’s the most punishment I could take :)@Conspiracy TheoristThat, in a nut shell, is why I find this more amusing than malicious. The irony is staggering. I would personally have expected some kind of symbolic protest in light of the fact that draft constitution brushes under the carpet BA64, campaign promises (let downs) and the heads are firmly buried in the sand. So the wide eyed shock is a little game of pretend by all. Particularly by PF whose amnesia includes forgetting Samuel Mukupa allegedly tore something similar at a rally in 2010. Oops.

  7. They were not singing the South African National Anthem. They were only singing the Barotse Anthem. It just so happens that one of the verses is also shared with the South African Anthem. This particular verse is: Mulena buluka Sicaba sa hesu. It is a lozi/sotho/tswana hymn. The hymn was incorporated into the Barotse anthem upon the insistence of Francois Coillard in 1902. The Barotse Anthem precedes the South African anthem. And be advised that Mulena buluka sicana sa hesu is not the same as Nkosi i’sikelele Afrika! So LT remove the wording on your caption. It is wrong. This is the damage KK did to the country with the fake history of the country that seem to have centred on himself and his parents David and Helen!

    • True. I grew up hearing the original proudly sung. One day the history books will have a less colonial/nationalist/political slant. It will also not be told in anger… but with the pride of people who have learned to embrace ALL heritage, even those who wish it were not true. In the meantime we miss so many positives coz we’re steeped in negatives. Know what I mean?

  8. Good for you!! This time no presidential pardon. These Lozi s’ and Tongas think they are above the law. They think the nation is scared of them. Why is it that they are the ones with issues all the Time? They are the ones who are not happy all the time? We are damn tired of them and their tu ma indunas! WATCH OUT ID*IOTS!!!!

    • Iwe Kungfu, u need to think before you talk. Why cant you just write your opinion in a respectable manner . The Tongas and Lozis are not scared to speak up thats why. Of cause they where wrong with the tearing of the constitution and they should be punished according to the laws of Zambia. Am Tonga and proud. What tribe are you.

    • Iwe ka 11.1 not of cause ni ofcourse…Speaking out and unruly behavior being exhibited by UPND and Barotse activist is unacceptable. People need to help any government regardless to move forward. we need developments not stupidity.

  9. Bakakeni atleast 6 months jail sentence each, if not, then Litunga should be behind bars for keeping Lawless individuals and promoting violence.

    • Why are you hiding yourself in Europe or whereevr you are? come out in the open like a real man and get arrested for treason to see whether you will come out alive.

Some of us have children with Lozi and Tonga women, where are you going to take our mixed sons and daughter?

You just need to work hard in a country called Zambia rather than creating anarchy. Shame on you.

  10. @#13 Nasilele – You say you would rather go to jail? You cowards!!! Why then is your ka Mr Mulaikwanda on the run? You want to make out like you are tough! We’ll start with your ka Litunga!!! We’ll have you arrestted and have your legs amputated again. Dont you people ever learn?

  11. We are all Zambian created all in the image of God. Let us not be too conscious of our ethnic groups but keep the wider picture of a Zambia for all. There is nothing wrong to be who you are but with respect for others space too in a free society with no intimidation of anyone but full of Love and tolerance for all.

  12. I support the right of the Lozi people to self determin…. That is to say I stand with the Lozi people on their re-establishment of Barotseland. I ask that Zambia cooperates so that this can be done peacefully and without the shedding of blood.

    • No struggle is peaceful. Struggle has so much blood. South sudan went through it and ask them. So if the lozis need peace they should behave otherwise they should be prepared for the price that comes with struggle.

  13. if you zambians want too see the ugllt of of barosteans atrrest them like for two day ypu will see……i hattteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sata

  14. Millsz.com and Conspiracy Therorist, i totally agree with you. We need to be very careful the way these sensitive matters are handled.

ZAMBIANS, LET US NOT TAKE PEACE FOR GRANTED. ONCE PEACE IS LOST WE HAVE SEEN WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN MANY AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

THESE MATTERS ARE TAKING OUR CLOCK BACKWARDS. COUPLED WITH NATIONALIZATION, ZAMBIA HAS BECOME VERY RISKY FOR FOREIGN INVESTMENT.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD THEREFORE IMMEDIATELY GIVE INCENTIVES TO LOCAL INVESTORS IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE PROJECTED EMPLOYMENT LEVELS.

OTHERWISE WE ARE HEADING FOR A BIG DITCH ECONOMICALLY AND POLITICALLY!!!!!!!!!

  15. Zambia is at now a very peaceful country. Western province is very poor.Michael Sata is our Republican President. The tearing down of the Silozi draft constitution papers by the so-called Lozi activists was a very wrong act.Tribal politics are tantamount to a civil war. In short, every human and animal behaviour is caused_ looking at what establishes that behaviour is the only solution.

  16. ala why arrresting them wen they are even found as tissue paper in government toilets. mwebatu some even sell vitumbuwa nopetelamo .

  17. Yes , good work. But we want the real persons not these nonentities. Let the one who was insulting , the big fish be arrested. Stupidity does not pay. This time no one will bail you.

  18. Dos Santos is the deputy mayor now? That guy is pure Angola, a colored from a Portuguese DC. With that kind of leadership, I as well support the quick independence of Barotseland. Those people need to start going abroad ku Lusaka.

  19. @The Bricklayer, right for lozi self determination is ok, but no right for Nkoyas and other tribes! The basic question you people always dodge is “What are the boundaries of Barotseland?”

  20. @22. Panda. Nobody has dodged your so called basic question. The boundaries of Barotseland are the 163 423 square kilometres of land Kaunda unilaterally renamed as Western Province in 1968. So my advice to you is to stop debating with yourself. If the majority of the Barotse want independence the minority will have to live under the will of the majority. Better still the alleged Nkoyas you pretend speaking for , have the option of Zambian citizenship. Nobody will take away their current citizenship. There should be no debate or questions about borders. Western Province was formerly known as Barotseland and this is the territory that was discussed at the BNC.

  21. Its very sad in deed that in Zambia today we are experiencing such from Western and Southern provinces. The govt should really do something for the sake of all Zambians. It has always been one Zambia One Nation, why now?

  22. Squeeze out iron from those chaps who think they are above the law. Their action is tantamount to murder. Wasting tax payers money like that! Give them good treatment and don’t compromise with whatever let justice prevail so that others with same motive will see that there are laws in the land that are not selective.

  23. Its amazing how people fail to see through lies.

firstly let me help you celebrating fools from muchinga forest. The Ngambela wrote a letter that everyone should find saying Barotseland will not participate in another country’s politics (constitution making), he was not arrested why?

secondly more than 75 people were involved with tearing the useless draft sh..t, why arrest 12? the truth of the matter is that those arrested were simply visiting RT. Hon Ngambela as per culture, as his office is open for everyone in Barotseland.

The police just trying to show their employer that they are trying to do something.

Munoba ni ngana mina linja tuni. Kozoooooo

  24. Am lozi,my mother was namwanga and am married 2 a bemba woman.ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION AND ONE LOVE.PEACE UNTO OUR MOTHERLAND.WE DONT NID NO TRIBAL WARS IN THIS TIME.TRIBAL WARS ARE GONNA BRING ALOT OF PROBLEMZ.

  25. But why are the Leaders on the run?. True freedom fighters NEVER run away, this means these Guys are complete cowards and they want to ride on other inocent people like the Youths. I also would want to see Mr Clement Sinyinda come to the aid of the Youths, he should employ a Lawyer to defend the youths who are in custody, may Milupi , Saki or that UPND lawyer-Lady( Mushipe) should go and defend the young ones.

  26. Thank you sharing these types of wonderful posts. In addition, the optimal travel plus medical insurance approach can often ease those worries that come with vacationing abroad. A new medical emergency can rapidly become very expensive and that’s sure to quickly set a financial impediment on the family finances. Setting up in place the suitable travel insurance package prior to setting off is well worth the time and effort. Cheers
