The deceased, identified as Gibson Zulu, had been receiving treatment at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital after he was initially rushed to Matero Level One Hospital following the incident.
His sister, Fatness Grey, confirmed that Zulu died around 21:00 hours on Monday night.
Police earlier reported that the victim had suffered severe burns and a head injury after he was allegedly attacked by a man identified only as Allan.
According to Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the incident is believed to have started on March 8, 2026, around 20:00 hours when Allan’s landlord, 32-year-old Tom Malombo, heard disturbances coming from his tenant’s house.
Attempts by neighbours to intervene reportedly failed, as Allan allegedly continued assaulting Zulu while threatening anyone who tried to stop him.
Around 05:00 hours the following day, smoke was seen coming from the house. Malombo and other residents forced their way inside and found Zulu on fire with his hands and legs tied.
Residents managed to put out the flames before rushing him to Matero Level One Hospital.
Zulu was later transferred to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Meanwhile, the funeral is being held at the family home in Bauleni Compound in Lusaka.
Police have launched a manhunt for Allan, who is believed to have fled the area. Authorities have appealed to members of the public with information that could lead to his arrest to report to the nearest police station.
