Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Gift Sialubalo, has implored local authorities in the country to embrace modern systems and innovations in the management of public infrastructure.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Kyawama Modern Market and Bus Terminus in Solwezi yesterday, Mr Sialubalo said as councils modernise markets and transport facilities, there is need to also modernise service delivery.
“We therefore encourage the adoption of systems such as digital revenue collection using mobile money payment platforms, improved security systems and electronic ticketing mechanisms,” he said.
Mr Sialubalo further stated that the government has a broader agenda to modernise urban infrastructure and improve the quality of life for citizens.
“Government recognises that markets are the heartbeat of local economies, it is therefore important that our traders operate in environments that are safe, clean, organised and dignified,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, North-Western Province Minister, Robert Lihefu, said Kyawama Market is one of the largest markets in the province and accommodates traders from all districts.
Mr Lihefu said the modernisation of Kyawama Market and the construction of a new bus terminus demonstrate President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision of creating conducive public facilities for the people of Zambia.
Meanwhile, Solwezi Central Member of Parliament, Stafford Mulusa, and Kyawama Ward Councilor, Kakoma Mutoshi , have called on traders at the market to support the project by relocating to a temporary shelter to pave way for the construction works.
