MMD’s loss of leader of opposition recognition insignificant- Mutesa

Members of Parliament

Zambians for Empowerment and Development (ZED) President Fredrick Mutesa says the MMD’s loss of the status of official opposition in parliament is insignificant.

Dr. Mutesa said that apart from the material privileges that the leader of the opposition in the house enjoys, the MMD as a party will not in any way be affected.

He says the MMD should therefore focus on its role of offering checks and balances to the PF government.

Dr. Mutesa has observed that the speaker was however within the parliamentary regulations to have stripped the MMD of the recognition after it lost some seats falling short of the 53 seats required for political party to be recognized as the official opposition.

Dr. Mutesa was speaking to QFM news.

  1. Yes Even PF will one day nose dive as they will have very few seats in parliament. It is important to note that PF is doing wrong things and many Zambians who know about them are rather quite. We are not punishing MMD, but we are setting a wrong precedence for the future governance of this country. PF is there to consolidate their powers for 2016 elections and they do not care who gets hurt in the process. But mind you, what goes around, must come around

    • What precedence are you talking about? They don’t have required no. of seats in parliament…Period. Do you want the Speaker to break the law? that’s a bad precedence of allow official opposition without a required no. of seat……..Change the constitution then we can blame this decision.

    • MMD are their own waste enemy. Picking someone who is more interested in self preservation. Mr. Mumba’s ranting as exposed him as an unwise leader.
MMD should have opted for long standing, dedicated but wise leader. Roaming members are only interested in themselves.
Mr. Mumba should focus on bringing harmony and reorganisation to the party than being autocratic.

  3. 100% agreed with Dr Mutesa, the only person who benefit in such recognition is the Leader of Opposition, through personal previleges. The Party on the other hand remains just like any other opposition party – with no special voice in Parliament at all. Yes, MMD should just concentrate on helping UPND provide the checks and balances, using the few MPs that will remain in its name.

  4. It’s wrong interpretation of the constitution. Selfishness, deceptive demagogues take advantage of the open ended part of the law. Love for money mps are easily poached in Africa. This law stands out to be an oppressive in the hands of bad leader.
