Food Prices are on the rise in Kasama despite the Zambian Kwacha recording a significant appreciation against other convertible currencies such as the United States Dollar.
A survey conducted by ZANIS in most shopping outlets and markets in the District showed food prices on the increase.
At National Milling Depot, a 25KG bag of breakfast mealie-meal is selling at K62, 000 from K58, 000 while a similar bag of roller meal is pegged at K53, 000 from K48, 000 respectively.
In the same shop, a 25 KG bag of white flour is selling at K124, 000 while a similar bag of brown flour is being sold at K112, 000.
At Shoprite Checkers Kasama Branch, the price of a 25kg bag of Breakfast mealie-meal is pegged at K57, 980 while a similar bag of roller meal is selling at K44, 980.
And at Chikumanino market, a 25 kg bag of breakfast mealie-meal is selling at K65, 000 while a similar bag of roller meal is pegged at K56, 000.
The price of cooking oil has also shoot-up with a 5litre container selling at between
K50, 000 and K60, 000 from about K45, 000 while a 2.5 litres container is being sold at K28, 000.
As for a 2kg packet of white spoon sugar the price is between K8, 500 and K10, 000 while a 1KG packet is selling at between K4, 200 and K4, 500 respectively.
And some traders talked to by ZANIS attributed sharp increase in food prices to a number of factors, which include the high cost of transportation as well as the recent depreciation of the Kwacha against major world currencies.
However, the Kwacha has since gain strength and is now trading at about K3, 800 to one United States Dollar, as compared to its price of K4, 600 prior to the country’s presidential election last week.
Meanwhile, Kasama residents have appealed to the Government to quickly intervene in the sharp rise in prices of foodstuffs on the local market so that the cost of living could be affordable to majority of Zambians especially those in rural areas.

Yaba, na ku Kasama shuwa? Back to the land.
In Zimbabwe the government has just introduced 1 million dollar notes. I hope RB and his wolf pack don’t fully wreck our already ailing economy and land us in a similar state. Sata would have naturally worked harder to prove a point but RB has nothing to prove, after all he was VP.
Na mvela na matuvi
Ah yes. The “fun” under RB’s administration begins.
Where is Mulogoti and Teta, Kasama residents want you now and not your hide and seek games. I hope these MMD chaps have not gone on holiday. Ba foloko imwe say say something.
And where the heck is RB whilst all this nonsense is going on? What has happened to all the promises of eliviating the standard of living for the poor??
RB is too busy continuing Levi’s Legacy to be concerned about food prices.
No 6, RB is celebrating being number one and does not care about the poor people who voted for him. Suffering rural people for MMD are just statisitics to enrich our politicians. The poor are a necessity for MMD’s survival. Besides didn’t the poor receive sugar, salt and fertilezer during the campaing period? You can add Chitenge materia and beer on the list. It is pay back time for them.
That’s fcuking Toadface for you Zambians. Another 3 years for you. The low prices during election time were only part of the campaign. Now you face the results of your wise vote.
Good for the people in Kasempa. Don’t complain. It just the beginning pa nkoloko iyafwa.
This is a great lesson to our colleagues in Zambia. Very unfortunate that the mental sickness in most people is at its highest levels, starting with the leaders! I think Zambia should be the only Country where strength of the kwacha is invesely proportional to what one can buy!!
To most people who’s brothers & sisters voted for this Govt, some form of punishment is needed by letting the chaps fend for themselves (not sending them money)for a while so that they appreciate the value of a vote! As long as you continue sending them money, they’ll never know the price which is being paid for their happy destine back in Zed!
the golden voes of rural Zambia have seized glittering!!!
The golden votes of rural Zambia have siezed glittering.
RB has incited millers to hike prices coz he lost there….you already know. Tula lima fwe bene but your empty gvt doesnt offer extension services,,,,,muli mamfonko we were getting sacks for maize storage and pesticides nomba imwe ba konto all you know is importing…..
We sell so much maize to Tanzania and Congo on uncontrolled grain markets so boi Banda posako amano,,,,apa we are planting!!!1
Stop paying us though price fixing mbuya otherwise uka lwala umusana…and you know what you will be missing nga caba ifyo!!!!
In all fairness, did Kasama vote for RB or the other candidates?
Its just three weeks ago when RB reduced the price of fertilizer, fuel etc just to gain a vote from poor zambians. Can he now prove himself with the promises he was making during campaign.
Personally i have no confidence in him and i foresee that we are heading the Zibambwe way.
Rural people should not even complain coz they paid for it.
Well wishers pano.
yaba, we are going to pay for our ignorance mwe. What’s the new inflation figures? We should be rejoycing the kwacha has appreciated against the major currencies.
RB has got nothing to do with this problem its the traders and millers.ninshi ba PF kanshi!
#19. the government playes a part when it comes to prices. It is such things that affect theceonomic growth my dear.
AMBIA’S copper industry, which only last year still boasted a rosy future, seems to be staggering towards a rather gloomier end. A group of worried bystanders—the World Bank, the Zambian government, private investors, the mine workers and their families—are looking on, wringing their hands. Some 15,000 jobs and Zambia’s biggest industry are threatened by the mines’ possible closure. What has gone wrong?
Consider first the invisible hand of the market. Zambia’s copper is too expensive. Two years ago, when the mines were privatised, it cost 100 cents to dig out every pound of copper. But the world price at the time was just 84 cents. Last year, efficiency improved and the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM, the country’s largest) turned out a pound of copper for 85 cents. But that, sadly, was still well over the market price, which had by then fallen to 75 cents (see chart).…
BARFLIES around the world provide a useful service for their beer-drinking comrades at PintPrice.com. The prices of pints of lager are compared on the basis of anecdotal evidence from beer-drinkers around the world, so figures are regularly updated. There are some surprising results. Beer in Zambia and Burundi seems eye-wateringly expensive considering that they are among the world’s poorest countries. The French overseas départments of Guadeloupe and Martinique charge just about as much as in mainland France. Beer-loving America and Britain fall somewhere in the middle. Happily for sports fans at the Beijing Olympics, a pint in China is just $2.46.

When something is good, the govt wins undue praise
When something is bad, the govt wins ignorance about it.
bwafya.
ubuteko bwakwa RB is just a joke when are we going to have a serious presdo
to tell you the truth am not happy with RB’s victory. he is too weak to rule he country. and am sure some minister’s will be looking at him to see what happens.
The last cheapest sugar was donated for a vote at Vhulamukoko, expedience Mama!! #27 I am not happy with RB’s Victory either….
RB is a light weight.
Rural people are not bothered by such. After all they grow their own maize for consumption through out the year. People who have a problem with this raise in food (mealie meal) prices are those in urban and peri urban areas (Kasama) who think govenment owes them a living. Just get back to work
When something goes wrong, its the president at fault. When a flyover bridge is built near Zesco, a minister claims the honours. Its teams work guys
I hope the Kamushi’s get to suffer all the more because of their “wise” to put RB in office…
YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET! RB AND HIS NEWLY FOUND MINIONS WANT TO FATTEN THEIR BANK ACCOUNTS FIRST AND BY THE TIME THEY ARE DONE, THERE WILL BE NOTHING LEFT FOR THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF MOTHER ZAMBIA. RB IS TOO SLEEPY TO RULE THIS NATION.
Neutralman I think its been ages since you visited Z.
Rural areas are not the same, villagers go to the boma to buy cassava en groundnuts instead of the opsite to be true. People in rural areas can’t do proper farming coz the land in not as fertile as it used to be in the past for them to grow anything without applying fertilizer. Now they need fertilizers and believe me you even at this reduced price of fertilizer most rural people can not still afford to buy it. Hence they have no choice but to do piece work make a 10pin and treck to boma to buy stuff they should have been growing. Its sad the gov need to address such issues if zambia has to go forward.
Why Not North Western and Western Provinces
well well well i honestly dont know what to do to my brothers and sisters in the village(western prov)cause i hate them thats why they are in the village cause they cant even make good decisions.they shoudnt come to my place cause i will throw my anger on them, honestly am very angry with them
Bantu imwe whats your problem with RB? why do you quickly criticize him, you have not even seen his reaction to the problem. look am not an mmd sympathizer but comments from some of you are so misdirected and they lack facts. Our government should intervene i know but do you think the insults you post here will help matters?
Grow up!
#36 and make sure you don’t give them money for fertilizer until the next elections. they need to tolt a lesson so that next time before they cast their votes they will first ask the people who send them money fertilizer who they should vote for, mine are on punishment too. i asked them to be collecting fertilizer from state house for the next three years. lol…..
OBAMA is busy forming a cabinet.RB is still busy sharing the remains
of the campaign monies.MMD stil has no leader nor vice.We were told
RB would reduce fuel prices again this week but alas no word from RB
and the week is finished.National milling reduced prices by a token
2 PIN during the campaign period, now prices have to go up and they
will remain high so that they recover the loss.
I have been to all the provinces this year and the poverty levels I
have witnessed are shoking especially in rural areas. My only hope for
change is in you young vibrant UNZA/COLLEGE guys not RB,SATA,HH,GM.
Work hard guys the future is now.
Cishika tulelya fye ama bula yakatapa. Its true we are eating cassava leefs.
Rural people have you seen what you have done to us. We are now buying a 25kg bag at K67,000.00 in Kitwe.Your MMD where busy telling you about Fertiliser. We have started suffering because of you guys in rural areas.
Rural People our blood is on you.How can you vote for somebody who is controlled by others who dosen’t know anything. Our arger is on you
This is not the time and age we should be seeing such issues. 44 years into our independence and people are paying thru their noses to buy food and the most annoying – school children abandoning lessons because they dont have food….
viva RB viva RB just do it triple it if want those chaps voted for you thats wat the deserv
What are the factors causing the price rises. The article has mentioned transport costs and depreciation of the Kwacha.
Would someone on this blog know. Please enlighten us.
I encourage the people writing these articles to add more analysis and not just report what they ahve observed. Observation need to be followed by Analysis so that people can understand what is causing the events being observed. This is basic report writing.
I will have no sympathy for you rural dwellers, you ll reap what you sow. You gave your votes to nyama soya for sugar, saladi, urea and and compound D, now you will see. Be prepared to feed on wild fruits especially ba kachokwe, kaonde, lozi and them kuma western/north western Provinces.
Your voting was pathetic!!!!!!
You diluted our votes for the fouth time now, grow up ba kamushi imwe.
It is surally bad for rural not to have been focused. As long RB is in that house with the sleepy and talkactive [MULONGOTI and TETA] nothing will change. You just voted in a wrong chap.
Pa Bwatooooooo for life. viva Ba Sata.
ba kasama kabili chabashani? lets make use of the land ladies and genlemen.otherwise abana bakalya imwefu, elo abafwashi mukalya abana.too bad
We are now paying the price of letting the same poor, disorganised, thieves with selfish motives in power!!
2 bad…can someone explain what really is going on?economists, analysts were ur u?
LT you are becoming equally silly. What’s with the cesnorship of our comments?
zambians am happy that you have seen why we wanted change.nyama soya must explain this and do somethig before it goes to worse.i believe this is the continuity you talked about during campaigns and everyone is expecting you to build on the promises you made.
Expect more and more poverty form RB. The late presido left at least more than 65% of Zambians in poverty, that is approximately three quarters of the citizens of Zambia starving. RB was insipired by late ‘s actions so expect the figure of poor Zambians to stay the same or double. Definately food prices increament and the Children in Choma situations are an early indication of how RB will lead the Country.
It is time for a change.
