Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PTUZ) has attributed the low grade twelve pass rates to examination leakages and absenteeism of subject teachers in secondary schools.

Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PTUZ) General Secretary Kangwa Musenga who expressed the union’s disappointment said the low pass rate calls for tough measures in secondary schools to curb leakages and absenteeism.

In a statement released to ZANIS yesterday, Mr. Musenga said PTUZ will soon be submitting a proposal to the Ministry of Education on how to address leakages and absenteeism in order to improve the 2013 pass rate at grade twelve.

He further appealed to government to quickly announce the date for commencement of Salary and conditions of service negotiations as the current collective agreement comes to an end on February 28 this year.

Mr. Musenga said the current delay by government to announce the commencement of negotiations on conditions of service and salaries has brought a lot of insinuations and rumours among teacher.

  1. NEED TO ADDRESS ISSUES OF TEACHER ATTRITION AND WASTAGE BY UNDERSTANDING THE UNDERLYING CAUSES SO AS TO FIND LASTING SOLUTIONS. AS FOR LEAKAGES, THERE IS SOMETHING FISHY WITH THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE SETTING OF EXAMS. KEEP WONDERING HOW WE NEVER USED TO HAVE LEAKAGES DURING THE DAYS OF THE FAMOUS BLUE PAPER. DO RESEARCH ON HOW EXAMS ARE SET, WHO ARE INVOLVED, WHERE THEY COME FROM AND WHICH PLACES IN THE COUNTRY ARE HOT POTS OF LEAKAGES, HOW MUCH MONEY IS INVOLVED FOR EXAMPLE FOR A CHILD OR AN INFLUENTIAL PARENT TO LAY HANDS ON THE EXAM MATERIAL FOR THEIR PROGENY TO PASS EVEN WHEN THEY NEVER TOOK SCHOOL SERIOUSLY. HOW DO GCE CANDIDATES PREPARE THEMSELVES FOR EXAMS? DO THEY ONLY COME TO STUDY TOWARDS EXAMS. WHAT WILL THEY DO WHEN THEY DISCOVER THAT THEY ARE NOT READY FOR ANY EXAM .

  2. Students expected to depend on leakages like it used to happen during MMD, but it was not possible with PF in power.Everyone is afraid of being arrested. We may have experiences leakages in few places but not as rampant as during MMD era. In my view these are good results as they reflect a true picture of how our children performed. Quality is better than Quantity.

    • i do not think it a matter of bad MMD rule That has led to this.Involnving the MMM will be toltally wrong,Exams came after elections so there is no party to blame for that, maybe teachers and pulpils or exam arrangements, how dn they arrange, who are in fore front when arrangements are made.Let us not be political in this case.

  3. How can you demand for commencement of negotiations for emproved conditions when the outcome of you efforts is pathetic ( Low Grade twelve pass rate).
Performance based management demands for efficiency and effectiveness. Positive results have to be seen for one to be rewarded. It is high time government implemented a performance based appraisal system for effecting salary increaments, so that non performing staffs ( e.g perpetual absentees) receive increaments corresponding to their out put.
The leakage ( exam Malpractice )issue is nausiating. It is so bad that even higher learning institutions are not spared. How do our country develop when some of our institutions of learning are producing low quality graduates due to exam malpractices,
The powers that be should really do…

  4. How can u blame low passing rate to leakages?i thot leakages leads to high passing rate since pupils will have examination papers in advance.am sure low passing rate is as a result of sealing the leakages.

  5. What do you expect
Diploma holders are teaching future bachelor degree holders
Certificate holders are teaching future G12 what do you expect
We aren’t given just as masters degree holders because you aren’t bemba atase wise up Zambia, this backwards think is a dead end road

  6. Where is the future of the country If education system is promoting LAZINESS by our professional teachers? S. Africa registered atleast a 70% pass rate among grade 12’s for the year 2012 as compare to our 58%. Actually even the Examination Results for Grade 12’s here in Zambia are announced to the public late. The year begins in January! and thus most planning. Lets adopt !

  7. Mpundu: S Africa’s pass rate is very artificial. The govt there unilaterally reduced the passing mark to 30 percent so let’s not compare ourselves to them

  8. Lets be serious how can a leakage cause these chaps to fail, the leakages have created a lot of fake results in our country for many years now this time around there were less cases reported which must have exposed a lot of problems in our education system one discipline cases among pupils is not there how do you expect someone to perform with a cell phone ( face book) on the other hand it never happened before most parents can’t control their children carelessness

  9. Discipline should be installed in our educational system teachers included that’s why there is also a problem between girl child and teachers these are some of the contributing factors absenteeism has been there its not new Mr Musenga and your PTUZ there are issues you should be talking about not pretending. Do you even talk to your members apart from getting their money’s SHAME.

  10. THE EDUCATION SYSTEM WE HAVE IN ZAMBIA IS THE BEST!!! IF YOU HAVE GONE THRUOGH IT AND TODAY YOU ARE SUCCESFUL THEN ITS GOOD FOR ALL CITIZENS.
ONLY FAILURERS BLAME THE ZAMBIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM.

    • Are you drunk? If you were on a private school I understand your nonsensical talking, but not a normal school of today’s Zambia, don’t comment based on experience you went through 20years ago, today’s Zambia has a lot of challenges, in general education has to react on a lot of social challenges and the Zambian school system isn’t able to catch up with the challenges.
