Male and female patients admitted at Mkomba Rural Health Centre in chief Kapichila’s area in Lundazi district share one ward.

This came to light when Lundazi District Commissioner, Janet Mvula accompanied by Lundazi District Director of Health, Allan Chisenga, toured the Rural Health Centre during the commemoration of World TB Day held at Mkomba Basic School over the weekend.

39 year old Judith Nyirenda of Matako village admitted at the same health facility, complained to Ms Mvula that it was un African and unethical for males and females to share one ward and called on government to construct a separate ward for male patients.

Ms Nyirenda also complained that Mkomba Rural Health Centre has no mothers’ shelter where people looking after patients could spend their nights and also prepare food for their sick relatives admitted at the clinic.

Ms Nyirenda disclosed that lack of a mothers’ shelter at Mkomba clinic forces people looking after their sick relatives to spend cold nights in the corridors of the clinic, adding that they are always subjected to harsh conditions as they are being soaked by rains.

Another female patient, Enelesi Nkunika,of Satiyele village in Chief Mwase-Lundazi’s area, complained of lack of health personnel, saying the centre was only manned by one member of staff who is always over worked.

Ms Nkunika, however, thanked government for sending drugs at Mkomba clinic.

And in responding to complaints, Lundazi District Commissioner, Janet Mvula, expressed disappointment that male and female patients were sleeping in one ward.

However Ms Mvula challenged people of Mkomba area to be organized and mould bricks for the construction of another ward and mothers’ shelter while government will finance the construction wards and mothers shelter.

Ms Mvula said the department of health, in consultation with Lundazi Central Member of Parliament, Mkondo Lungu, will utilize Constituency Development Funds [CDF] to construct the ward and mothers shelter.

  1. Can someone tell me if “MATAKO” in Lundazi means something else apart from what I know the word to mean? I’m just wondering how a village could call itself Matako village – and I’m just wondering with honest due respect to the people of Matako village. I just want to learn because is interesting and if there is a special meaning or it is another language in which the name means something else, I would be interested to know.

    • There is a Ntoto Basic School somewhere in Eastern Province! Haha @ Matako village awe sure

  2. How I wish I came from ”matako” village. On a serious note, people in authority should do something about health facilities in our rural areas. There are all sorts of problems accessing such facilities, they are far flung, have no medicines, not adequately manned and the infrastructure leaves much to be desired. Lets go out and see how our people are living out there and do something about it. Ba Pompwe imwe!

  3. My people are suffering and Mkondo Lungu, MP, does not even know what is going on in his own constituency.

  4. With limited resources sharing with the opposite sex is the least of my worries really. You want privacy go home.

  5. yet the same pipo when voting will vote for the same PF Government which has neglected them. shun future elections and things will be ok for you.

  6. Ms Mvula, this is PF but not MMD era for you to challenge people of Mkomba area to be organized and mould bricks for the construction of another ward and mothers’ shelter. Just challenge King Cobra to award the contract to one of the contractors, he is capable and that is what he is made of. Time for people to labour for no pay whilst they are paying taxes is long gone with MMD. It is better you call for contributions either in kind or cash or increased taxation. Who is going to pay or feed them for the lost time moulding bricks when they can produce their food and contribute a fraction of that towards the construction of ward, that is empoerment and development. Of course no free things with abled people even if they are poor. You want people of Lundazi to be eating grass. No, no.

  7. I DON’T SEE ANYTHING WRONG , MORE ESPECIALLY THAT MALE AND FEMALE WE SHARE SAME HOMES, WHY SHOULD WE BE SPECIAL WHEN WE GO TO A CLINIC???

  8. lets nt blame PF coz this clinic has been their in mmd error. so hw do u blame pf as if it was there whn the clinic was built. y nt say they need extra staff and put up more building as wards to accommodate the patient.
