in kabwe
Kabwe District Commissioner Patrick Chishala has called for fervent prayers to end road accidents on the Great North road.
Mr Chishala said there is urgent need for people to unite in Prayer because the country cannot continue to lose innocent lives on the same road all the time.
The District Commissioner noted that there have been a lot of accidents on the Great North road especially this year, which have left many Zambians widowed, orphaned, disabled and vulnerable.
He added that a lot of families have lost their loved ones who may have been the only bread-winners.
He said it was for this reason that his office is holding consultations with the local clergy and to undertake serious prayers on the Great North road.
Mr Chishala further said that his office will soon announce the date on which the prayers will be conducted so that the clergy and christians from across the country could participate.
He observed that Prayer has the power to change situations adding that even in the Bible, christians prayed whenever they were challenged with difficult issues.
Great North-Road has recorded a number of fatal accidents in which over sixty people have died between January and May this year.
Meanwhile, Kitwe District Commissioner Elias Kamanga has stressed the need for intense screening of passenger vehicle drivers if road traffic accidents are to be minimized in the country.
Mr Kamanga said a number of fatal road accidents of late were result of reckless driving by mainly passenger vehicle drivers and in particular bus and truck drivers.
The district commissioner said this in the wake of the death of a female pedestrian in Kitwe who was bashed by a minibus along Kazembe Road and sparked uproar among members of the public.
A week ago, three people died on the spot in a road accident involving a truck and trailer that rammed into several other vehicles along Kitwe-Chingola Road.
Mr Kamanga in an interview yesterday called on the Road Traffic and Safety Agency (RTSA) to intensify the screening of passenger vehicles if such road accidents caused by reckless driving were to be curbed.
He said it was a pity that most of the fatal accidents involved either a minibus or a truck and caused by the reckless driving of drivers who in most cases were noted over-speeding.
“I want to appeal to the police and RTSA in particular to intense screening exercise for passenger vehicles so that we can have only competent drivers on the road because the rate at which we are losing innocent lives as a result of reckless driving is worrying,” he said.
Mr Kamanga said there was urgent need for police to ensure that all reckless drivers were fished out of the road and that traffic regulations were strictly adhered to by passenger vehicle drivers.
“The police have just to be firm with all road users and in particular passenger vehicle drivers to ensure lives people are safeguarded,” Mr
Kamanga said.

And just what the heck will prayers do? Take people to driving schools, teach passengers the importance of having seat belts. encourage passengers to report careless drivers to traffic officers. wipe out the corruption from traffic officers who get money and let road-unworthy vehicles on the road. Prayers wont do you any good. Damn africans and your overrated christian beliefs.
Thanks
@Zed Athenio: Heeey?? What kind of thinking is that? You haven’t lost any family member in that road. Thank God your grandfather gave you that hyena skin you wear around your waist, thats why you have so much courage to insult mourners.
yes zambia needs serious prayers i tell you! and also those roads need to be worked on,,,,,
Very crippy sign,,,ever since PF came into power…numbers of road accidents deaths are alarming!!!!!!
yOU DO NOT NEED TO SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT PREYER,AND PASENGER BUSSES DO NOT HAVE SEAT BELTS FOR ALL ON A TRANSPORT VESEEL.wHAT IS NEED IS TO CONSTRUCT GOOD ROADS THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME! TO REDUNCE IN THE NUMBER OR ACCIDENTS WE REALLY TO CONSTRUCT RAILWAY (ELECTRICAL) THIS WILL BRING RAPID DEVELOPMENT AND SAFE TRANSPORT.
@moscow
your keyboard seems to be a piece of work,,or maybe its your fingers
Fellow Zambians, case in point (@Nostradamus). What the heck on earth has a grandfather crafted hyena skin around the waist got to do with road safety? We need to move away from this type of thinking where everything is interpreted as an act of the gods/God depending on your flow. Sweden is one of the countries with the highest number of atheists and also a very low road accident death rate. How is this possible? Rational thinking. One learns lessons from one’s mistakes on the road and NEVER EVER repeats them. Our thinking is “its the will of the gods/God, it cant not be avoided”. You then insanely with impunity annahilate all traffic rules taking comfort in the fact that you prayed before travelling and other christians are praying for you. Faith without works is dead. am more…
Prayers……?????how about creating a dual carriage way so as to improve the free flow of traffic from both directions. No skopo uyu DC same same na president wakwe!!!
That’s better comment, wide roads are needed, Lesa afwa abayafwa. Good you even thought of President, you should have just mentioned him SATA. There simply too many presidents these days, be specific.
We all need prayers no one can sustian himself we need God dont we
While the prayers are welcome, can we get to the drawing board and put together feasible (and yes, PHYSICAL) solutions that will address the carnage. I believe that the solution lies as much with improving the road infrastructure as it does with prayer. Don’t neglect any one of these – moreso the physical works!!!
Policing is not a very good solution in isolation – we need to i.d.i.o.t-proof some of our infrastructure so that even the dumbest in our society are prevented from injuring others. Overtaking lanes, dual stretch(es), the combination will do in addressing some of these problems.
Oh how i love driving in Germany on the Autobhan where you have no restrictions what so ever, perfect place to test a new car. And the drivers are good by the way. just saying
the road needs to be upgraded and traffic patrol needs to be effective dont just drive around chaseing bus drivers patrol the road gents high way patrol
no prayers needed here. just do your duty of building dual carriage and buy technology to detect erring drivers. what prayers iwe. stop stealing
Lets not hide behind prayer, this something we can change by observing simple traffic rules. Are we also going to be praying that people don’t over-speed when punishment can be put in place for such culprits. Sometimes we also want to blame the devil when it is only ourselves to blame. God is not father Christmas to dish out answers of prayers have bearing, its a bit like asking your son to clean his bedroom but you first have to pray about it. No wonder we are poor the praying attitude even when its all in our hands. Man made the roads so you sort it out. Having said that God is real and prayer works but not in your place.
Most stupid DC of the year award goes to this guy. Prayers alone won’t fix our problem. Even God wants you to do your part. He will do his. We need highways that for sure but for now the govt should alocate funds to construct passing lanes in most dangerous areas. Most of these accidents are happening during overtaking. On busier roads contruct these lanes after so many kilometers. That will be an immediate fix. Ba DC wake up.
Just re engineer the roads. These roads are badly constructed and have not moved with time. The problem is that when Government runs out of ideas they look for solutions that seem to be easy. God gave you brains. If you dont use them, people will continue dying while you continue praying. Pray for wisdom on how to construct good and safe roads and not for the reduction of accidents.
we need prayers not form pf supporters..we dont trust them..
faith without works is vain James 2:17!! You will pray and until your knees bruise and people will continue dying on that road!!
Stop those unncessary by-elections and put the money to fund a dual carriage way, period!! It is a shame that people would rather rise up against govt when subsidies are removed from mealie meal (politics of the belly) than when lives are being lost everyday on the roads. It really pains me how we do not respect life in Zambia!!
God will bless our country but the people’s responsibility will always have to be played by humans
I support prayers to be said on the road. When I was a youngster in Chilenje Compound. There was a spate of road traffic accidents along Burma Road. In those days (1958) motor vehicles used to overturn. The Cathoic Church embarked on a series of prayers from the Regiment Church congregation. Today there no ifipuku anymore on this road.
I however also subscribe strongly to the need for the new cadre of drivers to be retrained. These fellow just start and drive. There is no courtesy, no care for the next driver, no speed control.
what are prayers going to do? just make a dual carriage way…. prayers prayers nabanani? whom are u trying to fool? this kind of thinking is the reason we dont develop. u even want to pray for development. did japan develop through prayer? afyabupuba fyekafyeka fye
Prayers are always welcome….. In any given situation…
However, the problem i have with just praying and not doing anything about it is that we have continued having accidents!!!! And yet, people have been praying!! So, if this is a Christian nation and people have been praying, why are we still seeing accidents?!?!
What we need is action,… ROADS, and the DUAL CARRIAGE WAY!! SIMPLE!!
Even as a driver,…. You can’t pray, then go on the road without checking tyres, or with finished tyres, a vehicle not serviced for ages etc, and you do 150 – 170 Km/hr and get surprised when you flip or cause an accident!
Prayer must go with good action,….! And not to just go and tempt fate!!
