Katete residents want ZAMBEEF punished and all their outlets closed

Some residents of Katete districts in the eastern province have appealed to government to close all Zambeef outlets country wide as a measure to safe guard consumers health.

The residents who have shunned the purchase of Zambeef meat products in the district said that there was need to close all outlets as the company has abrogated the public health act Cap 295 of the laws of Zambia.

Neliyah Phiri of river side compound told ZANIS in an interview in Katete that Zambeef which has been on the market for a long time has disappointed the people of Zambia.

Government yesterday released the test results on samples of meat products take from ZAMBEEF outlets confirming that the company used a cancer causing chemical, aromatic aldehyde as a preservative.

And the Katete residents have hailed the Ministry of Health for exposing ZAMBEEF adding that the company should face appropriate action as prescribed by the law.

Another resident Joyce Mumba who owns a restaurant at the town centre said the situation has affected her business as customers no longer buy beef.

“The demand for beef in my restaurant has reduced as consumers no longer ask for it because it is difficult to prove that the beef prepared is not from ZAMBEEF so the only way is to close it,’’ she said.

Mrs Mumba who wondered how long the scum has been going on said it was an eye opener for government to scrutinise all imported food stuffs.

In a ministerial statement to parliament this week, Health Minister Joseph Kasongo told parliament that tests conducted on ZAMBEEF meat product confirmed the presence of the harmful substance aromatic aldehyde chemical used for embalming dead bodies and industrial purposes.

  1. Now the song bufi initiated by Zambeef to discredit the govt findings has turned out the bufi is actually Zambeef which has been poisoning the ordinary people. If in Europe / UK horse meat has been sold to millions what stops Zambeef buying horse products whether knowingly or unknowingly. The behaviour of Zambeef is childish, selfish and ” we are untouchable .” In UK supermarkets they apologised immediately it came out that their meat products had horse meat DNA they never challenged and called the govt liars by commencing promotions to discredit their govt but they humbled themselves by working together with the govt removing meat products from shelves and reassuring customers that this will never happen and they are on side of the customers. Zambeef has exhibited lack of integrity

  3. HH should should take Zambeef to Commonwealth and UN if he speaks for the same Zambians, he has been killing indirectly. Shame this is the man who supports anything evil and jumps at every opportunity that arises to champion his political fortunes. GRZ shoud de-registered zambeef and punish them accordingly.

  4. @ 3 that’s govt issue, u don’t jst bubble like a fish suffocating in mud, food contamination is world wide , Europe had horse meet scandal, u don’t deregister a co u make em account for their an safe practise . Katete residents well done for ur voice . the whole country shld come out strongly on this issue .

  5. Closing the ZAMBEEF outlets is not the best option. The state must sue the company so that the company can also lose cash just as pipo are losing lives to cancer and other diseases caused by embalming chemicals. As stupid as its operation is, zambeef is one of the major employers in zed. so closing zambeef wud increase unemployment in zed.

  6. Ban importation and sell of offals. It is not all meat products. Let us be reasonable.

    The question that still begs an answer from the Min. of Health is “what are the names and sfaety levels of other preservatives used in many other food and drinks?”

    Let us not be emotional as we sort out this problem including prosecuting Zambeef.

  8. If I were Board Chairman of Zambeef I would have stepped down the moment test results proved that Zambeef fed people with aldehide tainted beef regardless of the proportions of the chemical.

  9. Ignorance at it’s best.Who said meat was also tainted with the cancer causing chemical, aromatic aldehyde?I thought it was just imported fimbobos only.
    Why demand closure of the outlets national wide?Why stop buy local beef from Zambeef?
    I believe there is more to the Zambeef saga than meets the eye.
