MMD leader Nevers Mumba yesterday stormed Chipata Central Police demanding to see a named Patriotic Front (PF) member who allegedly caused the commotion in Magazine Township which sparked the riot.
Dr Mumba who arrived at the police station in the company of other MMD leaders said he was disturbed that police had let scot-free a PF member who discharged a gun at a rally.
The visibly annoyed MMD leader demanded the arrest of a PF member who discharged the gun at a rally.
Dr Mumba who firstly visited police inquiries but after noticing that the response was yielding nothing from the junior police officers, he went straight to Eastern Province Police Commissioner Grace Chipalila.
He declared that Chipata would not hold a peaceful by-election if an alleged PF member who discharged the gun was not arrested.
“I am giving you one hour and if you will not arrest this person, Madam Commissioner, you must resign from your position,” he demanded.
Dr Mumba complained that most of the issues which were handed over to police were not properly handled.
“I want to see the person whom we handed over to police yesterday (Tuesday) and I have realized that most of the issues that were brought here by the police have not being properly handled,” he said.
But Ms Chipalila said investigations were underway.
She asked the visibly Dr Mumba to wait until after the by-election and that investigations had been instituted.
“As the police we are still investigating the matter and wait until investigations are concluded by the police,” Ms Chipalila said.
The people of Chipata are today going to the polls to choose their area Member of Parliament (MP).
Those contesting are PF’s Lameck Mangani, NAREP’s Kazembe Daka, MMD’s Reuben Mtolo Phiri, Penelope Nkunika of independent and UNIP’s Elina

A journalist was detained for 5 days for possessing a book and was kept further even afetr the courts granted bail then later he was hositalised and is currently chained to a bed.A PF cadre in full view of police shoots at a crowd and the police release him?What investigation? why are investigations restricted PF cadres if its someone ekse they are detained first and investigated later.The entire Police force for the first time in Zambian history has become incompetent.Can the army please step in?

What is the message being passed to the general public here? That it is okay to brandish a gun in public and not okay to steal a book from a public institution which has not been reported stolen in the first place. Police needs to be serious with they duty to protect all.

It is hard to be in the opposition during PF rule and remain sane. The law is not respected by the Police and when you question you are mocked by junior police officers. As a child if your mother does not listen you go to your father and when he does not listen you go to the neighbours (Commonwealth etc) at least to have a symphathetic ear even if the neighbour may not solve the problem. Surely this thug and the other one in Kasama should have been in court to answer charges by now. I do not think the PF govt has really instructed ZP to shield thugs who commit crimes. I think it is an attitude problem with sister Libongani and Dr. jere. See how quickly they arrested those two UPND officials for merely presenting a petition at the High Court. Sometimes you feel unZambian in this hell.

In Livingstone By elections under the same ZP, opposition members were detained and charged for murder even before investigations had commenced! But in Chipata where evidence is there for all to see, Police are suddenly in reverse gear.
A minister assaulted an opposition MP in Livingstone in full view of a gullible Police Force. To this date ZP are still “investigating” or waiting for instructions from “above”.
