Attorney General (AG) Mumba Malila has refuted media reports suggesting that he together with Director of Public of Prosecutions (DPP) Mutembo Nchito and Solicitor General Musa Mwenye are getting excessive salaries more than Judges.
The media reports have revealed that Mr. Malila earns K353 million per year, while Mr. Nchito and tMr. Mwenye both earn K343 million a year.
This is also in comparison to the Chief Justice who reportedly earns K272 million a year, Deputy Chief Justice K267 million, with the Supreme Court Judges earning K226 million per year and High Court Judges K218 million per year.
Mr. Malila has told Qfm in a telephone interview that salaries for the Attorney General, DPP, Solicitor General, the Investigator General, and the Auditor General are all matters of law and that there is nothing to hide about them.
Mr. Malila states that the prescriptions of the said salaries are set out in an ACT of Parliament and Statutory Instruments.
He has also dismissed assertions that the salaries paid to him, the DPP and SG are allegedly a form of bribe for them to continue bringing Patriotic Front-inclined frivolous cases to court.
I don’t mind him getting that much as along as he does a good job. But so far, he is not the lawyer I knew. A professional should stand their ground and not pandering to political dictates. What exactly happens to sharp lawyers when they join government? They just seem to lose it. Anyway……………
His days are numbered. President Sata has slowly started weeding them out.
Sooner rather than later, Kabimba, Malila, Mutembo and others will be out of Government, for they seem to have been other hidden agenda’s than serve the Zambian people.
He “forgot” to mention that he gets:
Toyota Land Cruiser GX, Unlimited, Fuel, School Fees, Housing Allowance, Entertainment Allowance….
……and of course Kr1,100 travel allowance per day.

@Evaluator, absolutely correct. It shows lack of appreciation to compare salaries in Zambia with what is obtaining in the western world. If @Saulosi’s argument had to take some balance, my question is how does the AG’s salary compare to say a medical consultant in Zambia. Then compare the difference of same positions in the west. On doing this, then you will understand why such a discrepancy is unreasonable. While the medical consultant would easily practice in the west upon taking the registration exams, I bet you the AG nor DPP wouldn’t make it out in the west even with their LLM degrees. Persperctivity is necessary.
If the money is in old currency then i see no reason why people should complain.The figures are actually too low for a judge.A cleaner earns more than this in my adopted country.

Salaries in the Public Service have been harmonized as of September 2013. We shall wait and see if some positions will still be getting such outrageous salaries above the average.

Evaluator. Are you suggesting that those who, like myself, earn a lot have the need for a free, maid, security guard, car, house, etc? I have 2 houses, mortgage free, own a nice car, don’t need a maid, and live in a safe neighbourhood. My point being it costs more to have quality personnel in Zambia becoz of all these extra bits which are totally unnecessary. What we should be pushing for is these guys who get such amounts of money should not get any freebies

It seems there is no difference between these high profile Lawyers/judges and the politicians in Zambia. Is it because they dine with the wolves or the whistle blowers are just too desperate to catch anyone especially when judgement passed seem to favour the Government of the Day? People should open their eyes these figures may be what these people rightfully deserve, but because of the countries poverty levels and the Gap between the rich and the poor, it seems like these figures are gynomous and unattainaeble.
Yes people have the right to question any figures which dont make sense to them especially with so much corruption around, but be cautious enough as you may follow blindly, as intentions may be personal for some of the fault finders. In such places anything goes!

KR353,000 per year means Mumba Malila is earning KR29,416.66 per month. I really don’t see anything wrong with that cos where i used to work before i left three months ago, my immediate boss was getting about KR1,190,770 or in old currency K1,190,770,000 per year. Mutembo and Mr Malila are professionals, if anything their salaries are too little when you compare with what their fellow lawyers in private practice are making.
