Government has denied ‘parading’ former president Kenneth Kaunda in public forums and at international gatherings in order to gain popularity.
Vice President Guy Scott said Dr. Kaunda was an national asset which the Patriotic Front (PF) treasure.
Dr. Scott disclosed in parliament today that Dr. Kaunda was a founding father of the nation who has opted to help government.
He said Dr. Kaunda’s recent trip to Kenya during that country’s independence helped the Zambian government score a mark.
He explained that Dr. Kaunda escorted President Michael Sata and attended the independence celebrations held in the Copperbelt province yesterday in national interest adding that the PF had no hand at all.
“D. Kaunda is our founding father who has chosen to make himself available to work for the benefit of the nation and not the PF. For example, l went with him to Kenya during independence celebrations and everybody was happy to see KK,” Dr. Scott said.
And the Vice President has thanked the opposition political party leaders who attended the independence celebrations in Kitwe yesterday.
MMD leader Nevers Mumba and his counterpart of the National Revolution Party Cosmo Mumba attended the uhuru celebrations whilst UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema and others boycotted.
D. Scott said the PF government appreciates the maturity exhibited by the opposition leaders because shunning the event was retrogressive and an insult to the freedom fighters in particular and the Zambian people at large.
And Dr. Scott, who is also PF Lusaka Central Member of Parliament (MP), has said the ruling party and the opposition UPND should resolve their differences in an amicable manner.
He condemned the violence that was perpetrated by the cadres in both parties especially during political campaigns.
The Vice President has since advised the cadres from both sides to desist from engaging themselves in barbaric acts.
He was responding to UPND Kalomo MP Request Mutanga, who alleged that suspected PF cadres were terrorising the UPND camp in Mansa ahead of parliamentary campaigns and when government would stop the violence.
This was during the 30 minute Vice President’s question time.
On agriculture, Dr. Scott told the nation that two-thirds of the maize sold to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has been stored safely and would not go to waste.
He said government learnt lessons last year during the 2011-2012 farming season hence it has this year put in place prudent measures to keep in safe storage facilities.
Dr. Scott further disclosed that government obtained a U$S20 million loan from Saudi Arabia to procure 50,000 metric tonnes of urea from that country because it is cheaper.
Government bought the commodity from Nyiombo investments last year.

My friend Mature, I appreciate your wise comments. Unfortunately some of the younger generation bloggers have not read their history and dont appreciate what these old folks went through. Zambia has had 5 presidents each assuming power through peaceful elections and like it or not it all started with KK. He could have done it the Mugabe way but he conceded defeat peacefully. KK has never claimed to be perfect but whatever he did, his intent was for the betterment of all Zambians.

The fact is the current Govt is using KK for reasons that are more to do with the image building of Mr Sata. Mr Scott is such a disgrace in his ever defending position even when the writing is on the wall. All this is to calm KK down so he can never utter a negative word against Mr Sata, a man that worked for him and under him. Not forgetting that he Mr Sata was one of the most critical opponents of KK during 1990 when the MMD was campaigning. We are talking about the founder of our nation here and not a puppet on a string. If you look at the Americans, don’t the Democrats and Republicans in a way also “parade” their nation builders such as Abraham Lincoln or George Washington? Don’t the Chinese parade Mao Tse Tung in their philosophy of Maoism? Have you heard Cubans complaining that Fidel Castro is being paraded by the current regime?

If I may ask: Since when did Michale Sata get involved in the struggle for Zambia’s independence? Even President Robert Mugabe, who once lectured at Chalimbana Teachers’ College, will silently agree with me that Sata was a British tool who worked against the real Freedom Fighters. Pick any book on the recent History leading to the independence of Malawi and Zambia, read archives of the then newspapers such as “The Central African Examiner” and Sikota Wina’s “African Life”: Sata’s name is not mentioned in such databases.

Try to look both sides of a coin to make sure it s the right one or not. To say Sata is not doing any thing good in Zambia would a be lie. Vubwi seat was nullified because the MP donated money to the church. Kakoma’s seat was also nullified because he installed a call box at a school in his constituency. What would you call such elections that are caused by implicating MPs on silly corrupt charges.? PF cadres were seen dishing out huge sums of money to entice voters to vote PF in Livingstone, Mpika, and Mpongwe,and yet in Sata’s eyes that did not amount to corruption because it done by the ruling party. No one will ever match KK’s developmental achievements. KK took over Zambia when there was absolutely nothing and embarked on massive constructions projects, building schools, hospitals,and roads .He built low, medium and high cost houses to house every body according to their income groups. But when MMD came to power, Sata sold all of them off and then NHA build some, but still politicians and their relatives shared them leaving poor government workers to rent in shanty towns.
Now looking at all KK’s achievements any one would think KK would would never be booted out of power,but he was. People did acknowledge his achievement but still they punished him on his lack of tolerance and endless state of emergence.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with KK attending national events like the one which was in Kitwe. If he wants to be a States man then he should avoid taking partisan positions which not every one will agree to. Sata has proved in many ways dat he is not the falsehood u have perpetuated about him. U have lied he is gay,thief,corrupt,dictator etc but u can’t substanciate that.lf he was what u demons say do u think Levy and RB would have spared him. DEMONS!
Kaunda should know that he will always be a target as long as he engages in partisan politics. By now, he should be concluding his memoirs so that we can understand why decisions that he made where made. We should able to learn from his successes and failures whilst serving as president. I do not think he is in the right frame of mind to comment on what’s happening in PF.
Osmore good contribution. These guys are haters. They do not recognise the contributions of Sata. While I was a supporter of FTJ, I did not agree with demonizing KK and stripping off all institutions which had been named after KK. Everyone I meet from Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, RSA, Ethiopia, Somalia, when they realise I am from Zambia, they will say “Oh KK!” in appreciation of his contribution to Africa'[s liberation. You are right guys when KK spoke the Boers in South Africa trembled.
