THE Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has supported Government decision to revoke the work permit for Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) chief executive officer Kishore Kumar.
MUZ president Nkole Chishimba said the dilemma facing KCM required bold and punitive decision if desired results were to be achieved.
Mr Chishimba who was reacting to Labour and Social Security Minister Fackson Shamenda’s announcement on Saturday that Mr Kumar he would not allow Mr Kumar to work in Zambia any longer because of his attitude towards Zambian workers.
The MUZ leader said whoever had been following the unfolding of events at KCM would agree with the minister over his decision to recommend for the revocation of Mr Kumar’s work permit.
“The decision taken by the Labour Minister Mr Shamenda to welcome because if we are to achieve desired result in addressing the problems at KCM then we need to see effective decisions by Government,” he said.
Mr Chishimba called on all well meaning Zambians to support the firm stance taken by Government and President Michael Sata in particular against KCM.
“Government and in particular President Michael Sata firm stance against KCM is merely to support the welfare of miners and for this they must be supported by everyone,” Mr Chishimba said.
He reiterated the union’s call for KCM to make public its exact position on the company’s future in the country by releasing a roadmap on its mining operations including the challenges.
Mr Chishimba said there was need for KCM management to bring out the company’s problems to the limelight in order for people to understand why the firm was being treated differently.
“For now even us the union seems to be in the dark on the future of KCM in the country and this is the reason we are demanding for the need to have the problems at the mining firm to be brought in the limelight,” Mr Chishimba said.

Thumbs up Mr. Nkole Chishimba, KCM should be put in its right place. KCM should also not seek to defer indefinitely negotiations for the 2014 KCM/MUZ Collective Agreement due to the intended retrenchment of 1,529 miners. MUZ should secure a decent pay raise for its members in 2014.
Another dog barking from an anthill. Do u have got the capacity to run the mines you fool?
@ Zion Mpwipwi; where I come from, Mpwipwi means ” ICISUSHI”. So Mr. cisushi if you dont know how to strategically manage the mines, better you just stay in Kumar’s chili ass.
Mr Wiseman, what’s new. There are so many words that are innocent in one language and mean something completely different in another. Ask a Kiswahili speaker what Kumamoto means… this is an innocent Japanese word that ‘steams’ with insinuated obscenity in Kiswahili. So, again, what’s new?
@ Zion Mpwipwi, why do you still want to continue being exploited by these fake expats? Believe in yourself as a Zambian and stop depending of foreigners to make you work. We have plenty Zambians with high mining qualifications and great wisdom to even do better than what this Indian has messed up. Kumar has not brought in good apart from making Nchanga Open pit getting to stand still due to contractual issues with U&M Mining company. All he wants is to only buy concentrates from other mines.
@MCP. you are right. Zambia has better copper mining experts than India. we have been mining copper for more than 70 years whereas India doesn’t have a single copper mine.
They will always tell you that there are no skills in Zambia to run the mines because they just want to bring their own people so that they steal better.
Mining is not as sophisticated as it is being portrayed by these foreigners. Its basic science.
@eshu, It was not Indian or British executives but Zambians (Francis Kaunda and team including Edgar Lungu) who run ZCCM into the ground. Had they run the mine as a business rather than social venture there would have been no need for privatization.
the problem is you kcm does not belong to you but Indians you sold the birth right like the way esu sold to the brother Jacob.
ENELI: there is no absolute ownership there. This is the main reason that the government retains powers to oversee the operations of the mines and can revoke the licence if so wish. Which kind of law are you applying here????? stupid indian waba impilipili pamatako kwati ni Kumar
@ ENELI : which law are you masking reference to?? its Kumar who sold his freedom and birth rights. Be sharp in making references you kapoli mwenye
Dear Colleagues, pliz take what I m about to inform you seriously. Do Not, I repeat, Do not work for a global company with a head quarters/origing in India (mumbai, Jaipur etc) unless u r desperate n u just want to pass time and get some petty cash for your survival. U will not grow career wise and finance wise. They open a subsidiary in developing coutries with either their own indian ceo or a white oak and will mainly take very gud care of the two locals, the HR manager and liason officer/coporate affairs chap to dialogue with that country s government. The rest u will sweat blood while seeing so called indian expertriates enjoying life at your expense.mind u they hv well defined social classes in india. Dont be shocked to find the lighter skinned ones not talking to u when u even just…
@Anti Nonsense: great. you know these idiots well
@Anti Nonsense: great. you know these rat well
In the mean time,Mr Kaunda has taken over as CEO for KCM.What are the chances that once the govt takes over there will not be a family tree structure at KCM?Sad times ahead bane
Do you know Jordan Soko? he managed this mine better. you chaps, thats why baminyengela abakashi benu because you don’t have self confidence in performanace. Go and look at that son of yours closely. its purely a bangladesh product
I can not be fired. Slaves have to be sold.
In’ganda ushilalamo,baikumbwa umutenge (Bemba saying).
@Kal; That word in kiswahili! Uliwanselefye. Y ask a Kiswahili speaker insteady of a person from Japan?
If copper mining in zambia doesn’t help zambian poor from poverty then there is no need to mine you can’t just mine and give away and remain with nothing but enverlomental hazards it is better not to mine and remain healthy
Don’t worry zambians these guys will not go away where else will they find copper you will have a better invester copper remains yours and your children
Outsourcing has been song since they took over kcm,Zambians to be contractors and going home with nothing for the family
MUZ president Nkole Chishimba is just thinking one way, how he and other miners will benefit from KCL and not how KCL will make a profit. This one way of thinking is what has killed our industries as a result Zambia can not prosper and come out of poverty. If KCL has no ability to pay salaries of extra 1500 employees, Mr. Chishimba should probably ask the government to start new mines since we have abundant natural resources, and the KCL employees laid off can be redeployed in the created new mines, new industries and new farms as a result even more unemployed peopled will be absorbed in new industries. It is better to lay off 1500 than all 10,000 workers. NB. ZCCM which operated the mines for 16 years, from time to time laid off workers as the company faced new problems.
The whole country is gripped in fear. Even the most ardent of critics that attacked RB day-in and day-out can’t talk anymore for fear of repercussions. Deportation of Mr Kumar, is simply wrong. Even if he failed to turn-up for a meeting with state officials, an official complaint could have been made to his employers stating government position and propose other tools for consideration. All this needed internal confidentiality between government and KCM, outside of media glare. The issue of laying workers off is common in businesses all-over the world to keep afloat in difficult times. If Sata felt strongly,he needed a compromise.Well almost too good for this thug at Sate House. For him it’s about being rough, humiliation and infliction of pain to max. What a disgrace of leader
