Zambian named 2013 Scientist of the Year in the US

A UNITED States-based Zambian, Anthony Ng’oma has been named 2013 Scientist of the Year by Black Engineer of the Year Awards and Minorities in Research Science (BEYA-MIRS).

Dr Ng’oma, a research associate and radio over fiber manager at Corning Incorporated leads teams of scientists and engineers working on in-building communication networks and applications at the main research centre for Corning incorporated a 160-year-old high tech company located in New York.

According to a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Ng’oma was selected from a pool of outstanding technology leaders from across the United States – from well-known institutions and Fortune 500 companies.

    • @1.3 obviously you are not a doctor or you’ve understood that short report.It is not an award in ‘Black engineering for the minority’ whatever you meant by that.
      This is an award given to blacks and minorities who are in science and research because many times their contributions are overlooked by the white majority who always want to stake the claim as leading in everything (if you ask me) There are similar awards for achievements in other fields too such as the NAACP Image Awards. Otherwise the man has done great. One more reminder of what Zambia has lost. Congrats my man. Think of what you can do for your country also.

    • Check the prize title before you submit your shallow comment. The award is for BLACK engineers and MINORITIES in research. Just accept that there are some gifted people with more brains than you, don’t just think negatively every time you are put in your place, which is no place at all.       He has previously worked as a scientist at Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands), where he worked on multiple national and international research programs funded by industry and the European commission. Dr. Ng’oma’s other previous engagements include roles as a Computer Networks Engineer at Computer Technologies Inc. (Zambia) and as a Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Zambia (Zambia). Dr. Ng’oma holds a Ph.D. degree in Optical Fiber Communications and a Professional Doctorate in Engineering degree (PD.Eng) in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), both from Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands. He also holds a M.Eng. and a B.Eng. degree (with Merit) in Electrical/Electronics Engineering from the University of Zambia,…

    • He has authored and co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed technical publications and journals and two book chapters in the field of fiber-optic communication. Dr. Ng’oma is a member of the IEEE Photonics Society, and the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society.

      Just say well done. It doesn’t hurt to give kudos where due. Well done to him and all others for their achievements, academic or not.

  6. Congratulations Dr. Ngoma. Give a green pasture to a thin cow with a dry adder and tomorrow it will be wet and dripping with milk. Never mind the racist comment about “bending rules to favour Africans”.

    It must be from a Zambian of African origin because whites and other races have advanced beyond the mediocre thinking that Africans are inferior intellectually. Mix more and you’ll realise this. Obama could not have won if the non-black races i.e. whites (europeans who form the majority of the population) had voted on racial grounds. Wake up you Zambians who are still insulting others on the basis of their race. I am balck Zedian.

    We pray that the double citzenship close is included in our constitution so that more of our people can access the resources of the rest of the world…

    • Are you in Canada? I don’t how it is over there but here in America and I know in Europe and am sure in Asia they haven’t changed their view of Africans. The day they will do that, that will be the end of racism.Obama being president has not changed whites and other non-blacks’ view of black people. Not too long ago a poll was conducted about white people’s view of black people after more than four years of Obama as the president. It found that about 51% or 72% ( I don’t remember exactly but a good number) did not have a favorable view of black people. It explains why black people are not elevated to positions where they should be. Condemn his “bending rules to favor Africans…..” reasoning but don’t give a wrong impression about how Africans are viewied in this world.

  9. In USA, rules exist where people who went to grass thatched village schools in Africa are given chance to win something. That’s this guy’s achievement and in Zambia its news worth!!!

We have ignored fields that can bring real advancement that can enable us to fully exploit our natural resources and we keep wondering why Asian countries that were poorer than us a few decades ago have made economic advances and are manufacturing everything for the rest of the world while getting raw materials from us, Zambia and Africa at large! We cannot even set priorities on what fields are critical for our industrialisation and what skills can give us a competitive urge over other countries to position ourselves for coming challenges!

    • What do you expect from fossils with Unipist mindsets; to them putting tarmac on a road and building useless football stadia then attracting a hundred temporary unskilled labourers is development which even attracts the head of state.
      Our colleagues in Ghana and Kenya are currently embarking on billion dollar ICT business villages that will attract the likes of Google, Microsoft, IBM etc and in turn create thousands of skilled jobs in the private sector.

  49. This is wonderful news and Dr Ng’oma is not the first Zambian with such excellence. I meet many Zambian graduates and experts excelling in various fields here in the UK and a good number are my friends.
    The most painful thing is that despite having all these highly learned young people Zambia continues to suffer and retrogress because the old illiterates will not allow them chance to lead the country. Most of the brains of Zambia have been forced out by those selfish illiterates who depend on the jobless using machetes to keep them in power.
    Just imagine what Zambia would be if all Zambian experts in the diaspora were given chance to apply their expertise in the country.

    • Just look at Dambiso she is recognised and highly respected in the USA, Europe and Asia…but in Zambia all she gets is insults from empty tins like fossil Chikwanda and Miles Sampa who can’t even explain what subsidies are. The president of Rwanda personally invited Dambiso to join him and his cabinet for advice …..when have we reached out to our people and asked for advice?     We urge president Sata to offer you a job as CEO for Zamtel to be revamped to world standards of a telecommunications institution and effectively provide the country wide networking so much desired. Currently private telecomms companies just swindle the public with mad call charges costs.
    A successful story is when Prof Chirwa was offered a job as CEO of ZRL, according to Sata PF government Zambia today has a well developed railway system akin to those found in developed countries of UK, Germany, Canada and USA. We urgently need your services Dr Ng’oma, Mr Sata is ready to work with you.

  62. For those who like diverting issues to tribalism, just know that Dr Ng`oma is a Lenje from Mwachisompola off Landless corner in Chibombo District. So keep quiet now. All I can advise Tony is that “ayikona kulibonesha taa“ meaning be down to earth. This is the advice Lenje chiefs gave to Mwanawasa when he became president.

Mind you Indians and Chinese in the US are also considered minorities and as a matter of fact these are the people spearheading most of the scientific and technological research . Speaking as a Phd candidate in an engineering discipline I can tell you that Eindhoven University of Technology where this guy graduated is a top ranked university globally. Give credit where it is due. This guy is hardworking no wonder he got such a high position in a US company. It’s not easy so many talented people globally want to go and work in the US.

  67. Just to be BEng is something unnecessarily comparable, but yet, this son of our country has done something a more worthy mentioning with his name attached. I believe all people and I mean everyone in the world should be proud not only for him, but for the world. As an engineer you do not archive anything for yourself, but the world at large and that is engineering. You only get paid to stay comfortable while trying to sort out everyone’s problems, and even after you have done it, people still expect better from your best. Good job Dr. hats up

  68. Here is Zambia’s answer to her ICT deficiency, imagine if we connected our landlocked country to cheap reliable broadband fiber optic network. The number of jobs that we would be created in the customer service sector for International companies like banks, phone networks. Imagine the reduction in the cost of doing business…these are people our gov’t should be consulting with. They were more than happy to spend $200m on a highly ridiculously overpriced Chinese CCTV network but they can’t pay a Zambian professional a fraction of that in consultation fees.
    Wake up people!!

    This great achiever is Anthony Ng’oma and not Ngoma. Ng’oma is a common Bemba name from Northern province; Ngoma is an Eastern name. You may be interested to know that Dr. Ng’oma attended Chiba Primary School between 1977 – 1983. Thereafter he went and completed his secondary education at Kasama High School. He then went to UNZA where he graduated in 1994 and moved to the Netherlands where he did doctorate studies. He later migrated to the US where is currently domiciled.

    • The ‘g’ in the name Ng’oma (from the northern part of Zambia) is silent, unlike in the name Ngoma (from the east), but it is one Zambia, one nation. We are proud of the young man.

There is too much hatred, jealousy, envy, especially from the have-nots !! Some nonentities are even bringing the issue of tribe into this??? How low can you sink??? Out here we are all Zambian-born and we have a common passion for mother Zambia that brain-dead people would never understand !!!!! I wonder if Mr Ngoma has retained his Zambian citizenship or if our insistence on choosing Zambia or nothing has lead to the loss of a countryman that we should ensure has the opportunity to pursue greatness in another country while remaining a citizen of Mother Zambia.??? too many such minds are forced to choose another countries passport to achieve globally.
