Millers to buy maize from FRA

Share

Government has agreed to supply maize to copperbelt millers to enable them sell mealie meal at a reduced price.

Agriculture minister, Brian Chituwo, says government received a request from millers to buy maize from the Food Reserve Agency-FRA.

Dr. Chituwo told ZNBC news on Monday that government agreed to sell maize to millers after a meeting last Friday.

He assured the millers on the copperbelt that they will receive the maize as soon as possible.

And Dr. Chituwo revealed that he has received information indicating that some millers were hoarding maize stocks.

The minister appealed to all partners dealing in maize to ensure that they cooperate with government to ensure sufficient supply of maize on the market.

  1. Ok! where did FRA get that maize from, is it the same maize they bought from my farm? why does this smell like a scam? Must be the morning grass it always makes me Mheeeee! 😕

  2. About time too .As usual in Zed emergencies take a little bit longer to be addressed. First comes the more serious business of governing.

  3. So FRA had maize and the government was enjoying the high mealie meal prices. Iwe ka chituwo stop pointing accusing fingers on other people and blame your government for being lame. Stop runing the country like a machine and start thinking for the people and not your fat stomach. You were busy debating the pay rises when food prices were esculating high. What lazy a** runs FRA. Its such things that affect economic development and inflation.

    Pathetic government.

  4. 7. I dont believe this.So you mean FRA still have maize, and yet pipo are dying kunsala, come on this is rediculous,I cant believev this, why is that these pipo they want to be pushed for them to act positively, they have decided to sell the maize ku CB coz of the planned Demo tefyo.

  8. fuel price is a factor in this problem. Why cant you reduce fuel price when everyone else is doing it? want to raise money from poor people?

  9. I have decided with immediate effect to this govt,it is not my govt, but I will remain a proud Zedian. How do let pipo die ne nsala and yet you still have maize.Father Christmas Travel well my bro, please extened my condolences to youf relatives ku ZED,and may your Aunties soul rest in eternal peace.Amen

  10. **==**==**==Am afraid, its a planed move to stop plane demos, anyway its a step foward before we record more assasinations over food!

girly, how is your morning? have launched a task force to followup your postings,so far so good…..

  11. The release of maize by FRA is welcome but it should not be restricted to only one region – Copperbelt. The high m/meal prices have affected the entire country and so govt needs to do more than just pleasing pipo on the C/belt.

I remember govt promising further reduction of fuel prices by end of November, what has happened? All we hear now are just promises which are never fulfilled.

  12. Bane, the mealie meal issue is serious. Abantu balalafye nensala kaa!!! Fertiliser issue is on going. Not easy to find solutions here.
Even after resourcing maize from FRA, the prices of mealie meal will continue to rise. :-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?

  13. **==**==**== Your postings are jovial, thus the TF,objective is to know why the JOVIALNESS, its really involving mama & needs alot of funding……

  14. 1. Where is the FRA going to find the maize? After selling all the maize FRA is now involved in importing and they want to pretend as if the maize is from their reserves. Let them account of the maize they exported?

    2. Why CB only, is the Govt fearing cause its one of the nation’s powerhouses where riot threats are concerned. Every Zambian deserves a meal.

    3. Nevertheless, the food crisis is so serious and there is need for the Govt to dialogue with other stakeholders to find lasting solutions.

  15. 27.Girly,unfortunately God did not choose for me,as HE was about to,my brother’s phone rung that’s how i woke up.

  24. Nishani ba girly na ba matwold mwambe ukufwayana apapene? What if you are both men?

The food crisis pa zed iliko bad and now ba mukukulu have no one to blame coz they have failed. come 2011 rural areas must not vote so that we kick out bakapanga aba twachula pafula.

  25. #28 The mandate of the FRA is to maintain a strategic Reserve for the country. Maize is not supposed to be released from the strategic reserve unless there is a really serious situation. You may wish to know that some farmers are still holding maize to sell in Feb when they expect the price to hit the fan.

The government has released maize from the strategic reserve and will import to replace. Millers are happy but some farmers are furious. Governing is not so easy

This militancy I see on this blogg is a militancy of the ignorant. It is dangerous

  26. Why not allow market forces. Is the Govt supposed to be distributing maize. This will distort market prices and could bleed corruption by politicians. Puuting maize in the hands of politicians and not business people is not the best way to go. We had that in KK’s time and it never took us any where.

  27. ……..and we are told the maize at FRA will take us to february 2009,one wonders what will happen after that.i would expected govt to have started negotiations with countries holding surplus stock..one wonders where caleb fundanga is with the spiral kwacha against the dollar.this is the same man that was boasting that zambia had 1.3 billion dollars in reserves to cushion any effect of the global recession.KINDLY WAKE UP AND GET TO WORK

  28. [-x[-x[-x even if FRA supplied maize to the millers, it wouldnt be sufficent to bring the prices down. Its time gov showed its committment by making use of the researves made by Magande. otherwise, viva demo with necked momas

  29. What happened to our so called bumper harvest? is it poor food distribution again that leads to Zambia buying maize from France? Couldnt they buy it locally really? It would be a lot cheaper.
