THERE was a near riot at the University of Zambia (UNZA) Great East Road Campus on Friday evening after students failed to access their accommodation and project allowances.
The Bursaries Committee was scheduled to pay the allowances by end of last week but the students had by Friday afternoon not received the money.
Several students who spoke to the media revealed that the Bursaries Committee was scheduled to pay them allowances by Friday but had not done so, a situation that annoyed them.
But when contacted, UNZASU president Steven Kyengula, said according to information from the Bursaries Committee, the funds had already been released but that the money had not yet been cleared by the bank.
Mr Kyengule assured that the money would be accessed by next week.
A check at the Great East Road Campus yesterday found that calm had returned and students were going about their business normally.
The students later trooped to the Great East Road where they blocked and lit a bourne fire at the foot brigade.
Police, who rushed to the area, were forced to divert motorists to roads in Kalundu residential area.

When student union leaders were credible, before making a decision in the name of the student populace, they would call a general meeting (GM) where they would propound and expound and conscientise (sic) the unconscious. Not these chaps who call for a demonstration after hearing a rumour that their fellow student has died of suspected typhoid.
Somehow time in Zambia stands still. These are the same problems students at CBU and UNZA had 10 years ago.Will anything ever change for the better I wonder?
Only some of the residences were painted and repaired as they were used for some southern African games a year or so ago. There were pictures of them shown inside, before the rehabilitation and they were pathetic to the eye. The October common room was also being used as a ‘dormitory’ – it is common now to find three or more students in a room meant for two.
My last visit to Great East Road made me feel sad,students are learning in pathetic conditions. I did not get in any of the blocks because TP is now for ladies!!
