ZAMBIAN-born international economist Dambisa Moyo is among 11 other Barrick Gold Corporation shareholders who have been elected as directors for the global miner which owns Lumwana Mine in Solwezi.

The controversial economist who writes on macroeconomy and global affairs was elected as a director on Wednesday after receiving 592,898,749 votes or 97 per cent of the possible total votes available.

This is according to a statement issued by Barrick Gold Vice President, Investor Relations Amy Schwalm obtained by Times of Zambia in Lusaka yesterday.

Dr Moyo has to her name controversial book titles like Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better Way For Africa written in 2009, How the West Was Lost: Fifty Years of Economic Folly – And the Stark Choices that Lie Ahead of 2011]and Winner Takes All: China’s Race for Resources and What It Means for the World published in June 2012.

“Barrick Gold Corporation announced that the nominees listed in the information circular for the 2014 Annual and Special Meeting of Shareholders were elected as directors of Barrick. Detailed results of the vote for the election of directors held at the Annual and Special Meeting earlier today in Toronto are set out below,” partly reads the statement.

Apart from Dr Moyo other nominees who managed to go through as directors are William Birchall, Gustavo Cisneros, Ned Goodman, Brett Harvey, Nancy Lockhart, Anthony Munk, David Naylor, Steven Shapiro, Jamie Sokalsky, John Thornton and Ernie Thrasher.

And Barrick has announced its global copper production of 104 million pounds for the first quarter of 2014 with Lumwana Mine contributing about half of that.

In its financial result statement for the first quarter of 2014, Barrick states that Lumwana contributed 51 million pounds of copper reflecting the effects of an extended and unusually heavy rainy season.

“Subsequent to quarter end, a partial collapse of the terminal end of the main conveyor occurred. The company is assessing the cause of the failure, the extent of damage and the time to repair the conveyor in order to resume production. Current estimates are that copper production is likely to resume by the end of the third quarter.

“In the interim, mining will continue and stockpiled ore will be processed once the plant re-starts. Barrick has comprehensive property and business interruption insurance for Lumwana and believes the incident will not have a material economic impact,” partly reads the statement.

Copper production guidance for 2014 has been revised to 410-440 million pounds to reflect the processing disruption at Lumwana.

  1. A case of wearing short skirts to see yourself at the top? What really has she done to deserve such a position?

Something fishy, I know you are thinking the same. Is this what this world has come to?

    Thanks

    • Seriously Mushota ?
Have you even read one of her books?

Dr Moyo has to her name controversial book titles like Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better Way For Africa written in 2009, How the West Was Lost: Fifty Years of Economic Folly – And the Stark Choices that Lie Ahead of 2011]and Winner Takes All: China’s Race for Resources and What It Means for the World published in June 2012.

    • and what have you done my sister – to compare with Dambisa? By the way she has done a lot. Through her writing she has promoted debate on global aid and the so called technical assistance to developing nations. Mushota let us support each others prosperity. I am waiting to ready your PhD thesis.

    • MUSHOTA, NOT EVERYONE BELIEVES (LIKE YOU) THAT THE ONLY SOLUTION IS OPENING OF LEGS. DAMBISA IS A WELL QUALIFIED ECONOMIST 9SOMETHING YOU WONT EVEN DREAM ABOUT LET ALONE ACHIEVE). HAVE YOU READ ANY OF HER BOOKS? (STUPID ME, YOU CAN’T BE THAT BRIGHT THAT YOU CAN READ DAMBISA’S BOOKS). I HEARD HER TALK IN WASHINGTON IN 2010, THE LADY IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! INSTEAD OF SHOWING YOUR LACK OF BRAINS, GET AN EDUCATION SISTER. BY THE WAY, SHE IS A SHAREHOLDER OF BARRICK. (WHAT THAT MEANS TO SIMPLETONS LIKE YOU IS THAT SHE PAID MONEY TO OWN PART OF BARRICK. THAT ALONE QUALIFIES HER TO BE A DIRECTOR). YOUR FAMILY IS WASTING MONEY KEEOPING YOU IN THE UK!! COME BACK HOME AND GET MARRIED.

    • I think people are missing the point, I am not undermining her education and or influence if what is purported here is true then just may just maybe she had put herself in the sweepstake of being appointed to such extreme.

Sadly, I just have this big lump in my throat to let go before I congratulate her and this I must add is solely, I repeat solely based on that fact that I am not swayed or put it in the layman’s language convinced she merited the appointment.

Throwing books she has written does not cut it, so stop, just stop and look at things a lot more practical than letting your mind get clouded by her past achievements.

I hope you now understand where i am coming from.

      Thanks

    • @Mushota, you cheap skate. What do you know about being an achiever. If you are frustrated with life on a council housing estate in Lanarkshire, Glasgow, please don’t take it out on others.

    • Mushota, if you are truly a woman, and just as beautiful, try the short skirt formula and see if it will help propel you to the top. Ndambisa has brains and deserves to be congratulated. You are either jealous or envious of her.

But you have been very boastful of your scholarliness. Why don’t you take an olive leaf from Ndambisa by appreciating the fact that education pays? Or have you dropped out of PhD program from whatever backdoor university you once named? Ndambisa holds an MBA and a PhD from some of the finest universities on the face of the earth. Stop acting anciently and start growing-up.

    • iwe wule tasha aba biyo nga ba chita ifisuma. applaud a fellowwoman who has managed to make it to the top. ukutemwa phd.

    • That is what the teach you in the manual at school…but they will never teach you self education.

  2. Waoh Just Waoh! Congratulations to Dambiso Moyo! Only if you have ever worked for Barrick Gold Corporation can you understand the magnitude of this elevation!
All I can say is…. This woman is one of a kind for Barrick doesnt play tom and jerry, this is huge Dambisa!

    • Yeah, the lioness has been tamed. The wild beast is now under their control. now they can ride the horse to tame and catch other horses with ease. Classical case of the horse and the rider!!!

  3. Congrats Ms Moyo!!!
The problem with most people is that we can’t be genuinely happy for a person when they’re doing well!! Shame on us and God may God deliver us! If you look up Dambisa…it’s very clear that she totally deserves this as she has done so so much in her field! She undeniably has the brains for this appointment and I’m so sure she wont disappoint!!
    Congrats girl!!

  4. Ur a jealous woman who is even against fellow women, ur ar quite retrogrsive to develop. Ur so useless tht u cn nt even complement positive thinz! She z one of da few zambian tht ar usd in international academic cycles. And for own information we men do not write books for women for sex or other benefits.

  5. One way to shut her up….these people are two steps ahead. Why are we so shortsighted look at the bigger picture. ..she is a very influential woman.
Wake up from your docility and passivity …think before you submit your congratulatory messages.
    Wake up!!

    • Good news. I hope she will be a good role model of young ladies in our Country. I hope she will attract and jell with other known influential figure in the World and create synergy in uplifting sub Sahara Africa. She clashed with Bill Gates and he called her thoughts towards Aid as evil. Not good.

    • @ Jay Jay…

You are wasting your breath my friend. Africa is called the dark-continent for a reason. We are extremely naïve and we can be quite dumb sometimes. We go to school but come out having learnt nothing. We are dribbled clean all the time. I give up…

    • What we have is too many educated f**ls…no wonder the global mining firms love investing in Zambia; we can not see the bigger picture or primary objective for their interest.
      It really pains!!

    • @Cactus wake up if she hasn’t inspired them as a number one book seller then how is she going to inspire them as a director?

    • Jay jay brother, you are smart.smarter and well sighted than most.It just takes, simple logic to see where barrick gold is coming from.Zambia number one copper producer,of late, there has been this talk of how mining companies are siphoning our resources(copper)and declaring their profits in tax havens like switzerland,it is heating up.so what do you do,put a face that is familiar to the people you stealing from, and of course the one that is most controversial to shut them and you up,knowing very well that all we’ll see and say is,”she is our own”.I dont disqualify the capabilities of this lady,i dont think anyone can.but we should not just look at things at face value, let us question everything and i mean everything the white man does and of course some of our brothers and sisters.

    • @Kol..
The problem with us Africans is that we are forever hardwired to think like employees not like employers/ investors; no critical analysis or thinking whatsoever we can not look at issues from a different perceptive…we only know one word “job creation” not the bigger picture.
Dambiso is an influential economics author on controversial issues….she has tackled a lot of issues in the past and one issue she has yet to tackle is the daylight robbery taking place in the Africa via transfer pricing, retrogressive Western protectionist policies.
You do not want such a author to be bored instead toss her a bone to keep her preoccupied behind a desk and kill two birds with one stone by also putting a friendly black face to front the companies whilst the rack in the profits.

    • @Jay jay, actually I was not responding to your conspiracy theory when I posted my comment @9.1. I made an error as I meant to post my independent comment. I do not debate on other people’s divergent theories without cause.
As I said this is good news that this young lady is stepping into bigger shoes. This will inspire other ladies to stand up and be counted. My message to her and all aspiring young people is ‘Stand up for what you believe, or else you will fall for anything’

  6. This is awesome ! Dambisa will you marry me ?! Ha ha ha I just love ladies with a combination of beauty and brains.Congrats gal !

    • I would like to look at her early morning before she puts on those make ups and wigs. She sound bold though, congrats.

  7. Congratulations, Dambisa, you have marked Zambia on the World map.get your space and don”‘t look back.

    • Congrats Dambisa. I ve read are book Dead Aid talks of reality and works on the 1 to dollar principle. Meaning Africa is given a dollar the donor to will get $4 in return. look at China’s Road finance projects. all machinery and technical experts are brought from China while we get casual labour jobs with a maintenance engineer as supervisor under a close eye of Muchocholi. As for President 2016; Reminds me of Gwendoline Koni. Brains and Politics no match pa ZED.

  8. this woman deserves it.
but it wired though to combine and beauty and brains. most intelligent women of her level back in ZED are ugly; you cant even kiss them

  9. It would reaaally make sense to have her as President. Compare the Grade Nine mu state house with the likes of her.

  10. this woman deserves it.
but it is wired though to combine beauty and brains. most intelligent women of her level back in ZED are ugly; you cant even kiss them

  11. If you don’t know how please watch her Ted talk she is a powerful and beautiful black woman I’m proud she’s a fellow Zambian….. It would be amazing to have someone like her as a cheif advisory in government but we can only dream

  12. where is miles sampa…..can he compare himself to her….she talked of economic crisis in zambia but PF ministers as usual talk before thinkin.

  13. @Jay jay, actually I was not responding to your conspiracy theory when I posted my comment @9.1. I made an error as I meant to post my independent comment. I do not debate on other people’s divergent theories without cause.

  14. JAY jay and Kolwe I have read and understood were you are comming from. Don t you think the whiteman has only capitalised on our selfishness. If you look at the slave trade, colonisation and the aftereffects of colonialism after independence I am sure you would understand what I am saying. Right now in Zambia how many Zambians own or let alone have shares in copper mines. How many are even contemplating owning one in the future? If there are any I don t know. Till we start owning these mines we will continue mourning about lost financial resources. Congratulations Dr Dambisa Moyo on your achievement wish you the best.

  15. Is she Zambian or Zimbabwean or US citizen? She cant keep on introducing herself as Zambian-born. Even the late Deniss Liwewe introduced himself as having originated from Malawi but Zambian.

Anyway which pure Zambian has achieved anything?

    • How is that an issue? And what is your definition of “pure Zambian” ? Its this narrow mindedness that is taking us nowhere.

  16. The central theme in her books is economic transparency and prudent resource planning and overall economic justice among players on the socio-economic value chain. Her unsolicited appointment to the global mining giant BG may be at variance with what she preaches and believes in.

Look BG and other giants like FQM and Vedanta have been cited in dodgy tax, environmental, human rights and other ‘cash nicking’ schemes wherever they work. Dr. Moyo’s presence on BG board therefore may posit a feeling that she will be part and very much parcel of BG’s ‘ill’ corporate behaviours and actions.

An example I can cite is ZCCM IH being shareholder in KCM means ZCCM IH agrees with all KCM says and does in the spirit of collective responsibilities who approves, signs and publishes KCM…
