NAC spends over US$207 million in 2006

The National Aids Council, NAC, disbursed over US$ 207 million in 2006 towards HIV/AIDS programmes.

This is according to the Zambia National Assessment Expenditure Report for 2005 and 2006 released today.

NAC Finance Manager, Joseph Ngulube, said 48 per cent of the total expenditure was channeled towards financing projects for treatment, care and support of HIV/AIDS patients while about 26 per cent was disbursed towards HIV/AIDS prevention programmes.

Mr Ngulube indicated that the Report, however, recommended an increase in spending towards other HIV/AIDS programmes other than treatment.

He said the HIV/AIDS programmes received financial commitment with the help of multilateral, international non-governmental organisations and other partners.

Speaking earlier, NAC Director of Prevention and Miltisectoral Response, Alex Simwanza, said the Council has put in place measures to ensure HIV/AIDS funds are utilised towards the intended purpose.

Mr Simwanza reminded organizations tasked with the responsibility of handling HIV/AIDS projects to utilise funds in accountable manner.

The Council also disbursed over US$140 million towards HIV/AIDS programmes in 2005.

  1. That much and still no cure in site? Am sure theres somebody that has built a house or driving a nice car out of that lot of money. Some organisations just use the front of Aid’s epidemic to enrich themselves I have seen it first hand .

  2. The amount spent on the projects is impressive and they should keep up the good work. But I’ve a few questions to ask: How much was spent on wages and administration? How much was spent on workshops and meetings? How often do independent bodies audit the NAC? LT plizzz investigate

    moning pipo

HIV/AIDS projects are heavily funded, now unfortunate the intended beneficiaries are not reached,if any they just receive left overs!!! its realy sad…..

  4. I feel for my country men and women whose names are disgraced ,yet they can’t receive anything from such projects.fellow Zedians,AIDS is not as much as the % show. Most of the statistics carried by these so called NGO’s are not true. They are exergerate ones with a view to get cash from the mother bodies which is eventually channeled into personal ventures..
therefore,to make our efforts fruitfull ,we must first of all achieve food security in our nation.i noticed that hunger was another major factor which contributed so much to the persistance of this “animal”called AIDS.
Not untill we achieve this goal,AIDS will remain within our families and if not carefull,it may be here to stay!

  5. Good morning all!! :)>-

The problem is that most of this money is just being used for staff meetings at the Sun Hotel and kariba Gorge! So much money flying around but very little to show for in terms of results. Prevalence rate reducing by just 1% sure! Something wrong at NAC.:-?

  6. Hey at least we can give them thumbs up for making treatment accessible free of charge! Now people can leave longer and take care of their children until they finish school. Only problem is Zambian don’t wait to test until they are bed ridden!

  7. #11 Scientific

It is $!. Believe it or not but much more than that was spent in 2007! watch this space.

  8. Point of correction, he is Doctor Alex Simwanza, and not Mr Alex Simwanza. Hmmmn that was a big expenditure, how much did the Zed Govt contribute?

  9. Nshalande ifingi; mwebene namuimwena!! We are gud at paper work but akantu tulangeni the PHYSICAL STUFF, verifiable, tangible, truthful results- awe sure, lisengo ilya mbwa!! When shall we change for the better and honest reporting????
