Zambia : Muziyo roars into Glasgow Games medal spot

Ben Muziyo boxed his way into the medals bracket in style at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old Middleweight boxer qualified to the semifinals in dramatic fashion with a first round technical knockout stoppage over Cedric Olivier of Mauritius.

Zambia’s last man standing in the ring stopped his opponent in the 58th second to record his second successive knockout result of the Games.

The 2010 African Youth Games champion will face Englishman Anthony Fowler on Friday night at 22h15 for a place in the finals.

“At least we have something to smile about,” Zambia national boxing team coach Kennedy Kanyanta said after the fight.

“We are looking forward to meeting the Englishman and see if we can change the medal colour.”

Kanyanta is a Commonwealth Games medal winner himself after picking Flyweight Gold at the 2002 event down in Manchester.

And Muziyo’s feat on Wednesday means Zambia is guaranteed its second medal at the Games.

Both losing semifinalists get Bronze while the winners battle for Silver and Gold.

Zambia’s only medal so far in Glasgow has come in Judo where Boas Munyonga won a Bronze medal in the 81Kg category.

yes muziyo is a good boxer and determinated, strong, he don’t fear if he pull though then we shall reap gold.

even those who failed to win a mendal did us pride being representing the Zambian flag. let us encourage everyone including the swimmers. they’ll win a medal next time

Ever seen the kapoyas at bus stations or market. Those guys look ruthless. We should train them to be boxers. Mayweather wont stand a chance.
