CHIPATA Catholic Diocese Bishop George Lungu has disclosed that the church is contemplating to exhume and rebury the remains of first indigenous Zambian Cardinal Merdado Joseph Mazombwe in the diocese.

Bishop Lungu said through Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator Fr Wilfred Bwezani at a first memorial anniversary of Cardinal Mazombwe that the Church was in the process of lifting the remains of the Cardinal from where it was buried in Lusaka to Chipata where he spend most of his time.

“As a church or diocese we are contemplating that the remains of Merdado Cardinal Joseph Mazombwe must rest in Chipata Diocese not Lusaka,” he said.

He said the process would be made known to the public after consultations were concluded in due course.

Bishop Lungu told the congregants that included Auxiliary Bishop Benjamin Phiri, Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi of the Chewa and Zambia Ambassador to France Solomon Mbuzi that Cardinal Mazombwe became a hero when he was still alive through his good spiritual works.

Bishop Lungu said Cardinal Mazombwe persevered in a lot of things despite the discouragement he received by people who surrounded him.

He said Cardinal Mazombwe did not give up because he saw a vision in his ministry in Chipata Diocese growing and producing many fruits such as female catechists in the diocese , diocesan priests and even the Good Shepherd Sisters who have spread all over the country and other countries in spreading the good news.

Bishop Lungu thanked the parents of the late Cardinal Mazombwe for the good work they did in seeing to it that their child grew up to love and fear god.

He said his parents especially his mother did a lot of work in building him to be a servant of god.

Speaking at the same commemoration, the Paramount Chief pledged to continue working with the church.

The traditional leader said he was happy that the church was working with the traditional leadership in a number of areas.

  1. Why is there so much confusion in Zambia, even in churches? Digging up dead bodies and reburying them is unAfrican. The holy man was not buried in Lusaka by accident!

    • Was it the reason why Ba Sata decided nt to attend Mazombwe’s funeral was he protesting about burial site?
I also think its better to late lay where he is.

  2. This is stupid! It does not matter where one is buried. These fcukers just want to cause needless confusion among the church members. Would George Lungu say the same if the cardinal died in the lost Malaysian Airlines MH370??

    • @Suntwe sober minds do not use f***k on an innocent men of God, and if you are serious with comments then i must say your simpleton mind needs to be examined.

  3. This wont make any deference guys. The resurrection of the dead in the Lord Jesus Christ will not happen in Chipata or Eastern province only but the whole world. In the bush or in, river/ ocean or village, Just by twinkling of an eye, we shall all be caught up and see our Lord Jesus Christ.

Please stop it and learn from Soul and Samuel story whom they exhumed from the grave and Samuel shouted at Soul telling him that Why are you mistreating me when I am resting?

Leave the man of God to rest lest evil spirit will be on you.

  4. @Idah you r lying….!!! Which Bible says tht the Dead (Spirit) speak. Tht story u r trying to bring WAS NOT Samuel my Dear.
On ths Issue even Joseph gave a command tht his BONES or remains shud b taken back to Canaan frm Egypt. If Mazombwe said tht THEN WHY NOT FULFIL HIS WISHES.
But if its just the suggestion of some Priests THEN thts Idiocy of its Kind.

    • @Anderson Chisala, at whose cost…Mazombwe’s or Government? I would rather they build a school in his honour in Chipata than waste money.

  5. I have seen people in different parts of the world including Africa who have the desire to connect themselves with their beloved dead members. They do this in many different ways. When I visited the basilica of St. Peter in Rome, I saw hundreds of people touching the statue trying to connect themselves with St. People or to receive a blessing. The people of Chipata Diocese may be having similar desires, to connect themselves to the Cardinal whom they loved so much as their shepherd. If it can be made easier for most of the People in Chipata to connect themselves with this Cardinal, why not do so. I support the idea, go ahead Bishop, help your flock. There is already a School in Chipata named Medardo Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe.
