A 40 year old man of Kapanda area in Serenje District in Central Province has committed suicide.
Gilbert Kalunga of Chief Kabamba’s area committed suicide yesterday by hanging himself with a Chitenge material in his house at night.
Kalunga’s wife, Misozi Chibale 22, told ZANIS in an interview that she was shocked when she noticed that her husband was not in bed at around 22:00hrs and later found him hanging in the house.
She said she does not understand the motive behind her husband’s action as he was diagnosed with a heart problem some time back.
And Kalunga’s mother-in-law, Dorothy Chibanda said she had noticed that her son-in-law was not himself in the morning, but thought it was the effect of the heart herbal remedy that was causing him to look slightly low.
Central Province Police Commanding officer Standwell Lungu confirmed the incidence to ZANIS in a telephone interview saying police do not suspect foul play.
Mr Lungu said it is unfortunate for the country to be losing citizens in such a manner.
The Commissioner of Police urged people to refrain from taking their lives but always find better solutions to their problems.
“People should know that taking one’s life is not only a taboo but also a sin against God, ‘’Mr Lungu said.
He disclosed that the deceased’s body is lying in Serenje District Hospital awaiting postmortem.

Living in Africa when you have a health problem can be challenging. Why was he taking a Herbal remedy for a heart condition? Maybe he could not afford proper medicine. It’s easy to see he was in emotional turmoil.
God have mercy on our politicians for failing to collect taxes so that the poor can be taken care of.

Mr. Central province Commanding Officer…… I don’t think this it is our place to pass judgement about hanging oneself being a sin. God is the author of life and only He knows our hearts and our weaknesses…. After death He and only He is the ultimate judge. We don’t know why some people commit suicide whilst others fight it (problems/sicknesses/challenges) out. Only God knows and He is the one to judge….. As the saying goes “don’t judge the way I walk because you have never put on my shoes”.

Thanks for your comment just to add one thing, depression is a disease that we as human beings don’t understand. God is all knowing and Merciful he will look at what was going on in someone’s mind/ heart at the time they committed suicide. Therefore we can not laugh and say a person who commits suicide is going to hell. Let us not depress the relatives with silly comments because this the time to help them heal.

Why was he staying with MOTHER in law, also why motherinlaw comments first kuti he was low, why not his mother or father. The wife’s familyknows the cause, ba mushota RB and Thandiwe the gap was 40yrs, SATA and kaseba 30yrs, so the man was OK
Imwe bantu, somebody is sick and commits suicide may be from depression and you are talking about suicide is a sin. Who says suicide is a sin? Have you ever talked to God about it? This guy obviously was suffering a heart problem and must have been in pain, and a lot of people who are sick get into that suicidal mode. And so, how s.t.u.p.i.d. can you be to think that the best way to discourage somebody in severe pain from committing suicide is to say to them that committing suicide is a sin! Oh, by the way, boi don’t kill yourself because it’s taboo in our culture! Ninani walanda? Oh, ulya chi-colour kapokola uwiminine palya! After 50 years, the best training we can give to our policemen is bible sermons…the little rationality the whiteman left is completely gone!

the story is also very brief…..where is the suicide note?…how big is the house…2200 is not that late for the wife to be ‘dead’ asleep….those who hang themselves make a lot of noise struggling for life…she could have heard some noise…..chitenge material..??…would just feel like a scarf and can easily be untied…comments from the in-laws also bring out suspicious grounds…..heart problem reason is unreasonable…..so many clues to suspect foul play….
