MMD Copperbelt Province Treasurer Toby Maliti says the mode of adopting a presidential candidate should have been made open to all MMD members as opposed to restricting it only to two people.
He said he has presidential ambitions and the move has allegedly prevented him from contesting the presidency.
Mr Maliti, who is also Chingola and Kalulushi District Commissioner in the Rupiah Banda administration, said in a statement that every MMD member has got an opportunity to stand for presidency.
“l strongly feel that every member of MMD if the vacancy existed has an equal opportunity to apply and be considered to be a candidate. I harbor the intentions to contest for election as a presidential candidate had the party declared the nomination and adoption process open,” said Maliti.
The former ruling party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has however adopted former president Rupiah Banda as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections.
Incumbent Party President Nevers Mumba has since been suspended for alleged gross indiscipline.
But President Mumba’s Special Assistant Raphael Nakacinda dismissed the suspension of Dr Mumba and subsequent adoption of Mr Banda as illegal and madness.
The adoption of Mr. Banda as presidential candidate has riled mixed feelings among party members across the country.

If I were part of the voters in this January 2015 elections, I would have considered voting for a party that would show democracy through electing their presidential candidate, not nomination. MMD, show democracy in your party for people to trust your leadership. Don’t say I didn’t worn you. “One who cannot be trusted with minor roles cannot be trusted with important roles.”
