Choma General Hospital gutted, patients evacuated

AUTHORITIES at Choma General Hospital on Saturday night evacuated patients from the children’s and female wards after fire gutted part of the old administration office block roof.

The fire, which only burnt part of the ceiling board, was caused by an electrical fault, which caused a spark after a branch fell on electricity supply lines.

A check at the old administration block on Sunday morning found part of the ceiling board burnt while electricity supply to the laboratory, dental unit and the pharmacy departments was disconnected.

Southern Province medical officer Jelita Chinyonga said yesterday that no one was injured because fire fighters quickly moved in to quench the fire.

“Between 20:30hours and 21:00hours, there was a fire sparked by a branch which fell on the power supply lines outside. the spark extended to the power distribution box in the administration block at the old hospital where the fire started from.

“Patients from children’s ward and female wards, which are wards near the administration block, were immediately evacuated to other wards for safety and we are currently trying to tap power so that we connect it to the laboratory, dental unit and the pharmacy,” Dr Chinyonga said.

She said firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other departments.

Dr Chinyonga said electricity wiring at the hospital requires a complete overhaul because the building is old.

“We will also trim our trees to avoid branches falling on electricity cables,” she said.

    • @Katondo boys, so true, His Excellency Miles Sampa will make headstart and bring development to the province he grew up in as he will do across the country. He is vibrant and energetic leader with experience in government and private sector alike. Viva PF, Viva the second youngest President (after KK ) of the republic of Zambia.

  1. Sad development. Act of nature, hope all that were affected are okay. We have all of you in our prayers. Hopefully our joke of a government will find it in themselves to react swiftly and restore normal operations as soon as possible. The president is busy playing his lead role in PLAY FOR TODAY instead of making sure his government is able to respond adequately to such emergencies.

    • My friend, let me remind you that some of those tragidy involving electricity were illegally connected. In this story overgrowing trees were not cut off, ie a sign of lack knowledge of preventing. Only acting after the incidence happened.

  2. A fire at a Hospital is very alarming. Good to know there was no loss of live due to this fire. Well done Fire fighters and staff.
