Orphanages warned against wrong doings

Government has called on orphanages to realign their programmes and ensure that the children are the major beneficiaries of such institutions.

Lusaka Province Minister Lameck Mangani says orphanages and Drop-in-Centres should focus on helping vulnerable in children in society.

He said it is contrary to the law and immoral to use such centres to enrich those that run such institutions.

Mr. Mangani this in a speech read on his behalf by Provincial Assistant Secretary, Brendah Simainga, during the community work at Fountain of Hope Orphanage Centre in Lusaka today.

Speaking earlier, Fountain of Hope Centre Executive Director, Isaac Chirwa, urged the youths in the country to desist from engaging in illicit activities.

At the same occasion, Kamwala ward 5 Councillor, Angela Banda, attributed the increase in the number of street children in the country to the breakdown of the extended family system.

Mrs. Banda called on communities to preserve cultural values if the problem of street kids, orphaned and vulnerable children is to be solved.

The visit to the institution is in line with Youth Week activities under the theme “Partnership for National Development”.

Youth Week celebrations are held to recognize the contribution of young people to national development.

Government has since lined up various activities such as choral competitions, expositions, sports competitions as part of this year’s Youth Week Celebrations.

  1. Govt., lets pass a law to audit them. Some of them are money spinning ventures using or abusing the unfortunate situation the orphanages are in. the christians ones like Catholics are genuine and a few though the new ones infiltrated by quacks and using them to enrich themselves.

  2. Its a sad development if orphans do not receive what they deserve. They did not put themselves in that situation in the first place.

  3. Corruption is a lame activity, people have no feeling for the vulnerable,so heartless
