FAZ president and soccer icon Kalusha has paid tribute to ex-Zambia and Power Dynamos striker Elson Mkandawire who died in a road accident on Tuesday evening in Chililabombwe.
Mkandawire, 29, died on the spot when the car he was in rammed into a fuel tanker.
He was on the books of FAZ Super League side Napsa Stars although he never featured for the Lusaka outfit.
“It is an undeniable fact that wherever he went he made an indelible mark as one of the most revered forwards of his generation,” Kalusha said in a media statement.
Zanaco trainer Numba Mumamba who coached Mkandawire at Sunset when the club won the 2012 Super League title described him as a vibrant footballer.
“My condolences to the Mkandawire family for the death of a young and vibrant football player Elson. We will greatly miss you and may your soul rest in peace in Jesus name,” Mumamba said.
Mkandawire’s former Arthur Davies team mate Francis Kombe said:”Elson you are no more too bad. The football family will miss you big time.”
Ex-Konkola Blades captain Chileya Chipulu who played together with Mkandawire in Chililabombwe in 2011 hailed the late as a good striker.
“You were just a good striker. We played together in 2011 at Konkola Blades,” Chipulu said.
Mkandawire last season scored eight goals for Blades in the first half of the season before he left for Napsa.
The former Zesco United and Kabwe Warriors striker launched his career at Katopola United in Chipata before switching to Livingstone Pirates in 2004 and was poached by Power in 2006.
He played for the national team during Herve Renard’s first spell as Chipolopolo coach in 2008.
Mkandawire was unused substitute at the first edition of the CHAN tournament in Ivory Cost where Zambia minted bronze.
