JANUARY 2015 – APRIL 2015

Today marks 90 days since President Edgar Lungu was inaugurated. With elections due in 2016 President Lungu is already 3 months into a presidency that will be put to the vote in the next 17 months. In these first 90 days we have seen that the PF Government’s priorities continue to be misdirected and that yet more opportunities for Zambia to move forward have been wasted.

Over the past 90 days Zambians have been hearing only of Government trips abroad and delays to infrastructure projects as a result of missing payments and corruption. Prices remain high and jobs remain scarce, the Kwacha has been labelled the worst performing currency in the world, and massive fuel shortages have hurt struggling families and Zambian businesses. Under President Lungu there appears to be a continuation of all the worst aspects of PF Government.

[pullquote]they must stop relying on borrowing large sums of money to fill gaps in financing that have resulted from their bad planning[/pullquote]
While President Lungu and his entourage have seemingly toured the world, travelling to Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Angola, South Africa,Namibia and China, and spent yet more money on holding expensive
by-elections, the wage and employment freezes have been maintained, our own healthcare system is falling apart, and we have university students selling tomatoes on the roadside.

The PF Government has also continued some of its more suspect practices under President Lungu, including abuse of the Public Order Act, intimidation and harassment of UPND supporters and gagging of the media. Meanwhile President Lungu continues to delay on the new constitution that the PF promised in 90 days back in 2011. We in the UPND are still counting the days and we are now at 1,310.

We urge the PF to quickly get back on track and focus their energies on the business of governing in the interests of the Zambian people. They must set out a vision for Zambia and quickly address the economic challenges we face so we can find the revenues to pay for much needed improvements in healthcare and education. The PF must put an end to the policy inconsistency that we have seen with both the retirement age matter and the mining taxation over the past 90 days. Such inconsistency is bad for business, and when businesses close jobs are lost not created.

Finally, they must stop relying on borrowing large sums of money to fill gaps in financing that have resulted from their bad planning.

Clearly, this is not the kind of leadership this nation needs. Together we can do better.

Hakainde Hichilema
UPND President

  1. It’s been 90 days of the same old Sh*”%t..When will Zambians rise from slumber? We need a leader born in the 1970’s plus -those are the progressive Zambians.

    • Yes indeed. Where are the elected UPND Members of parliament who should be putting up Accountability Debates in parliament.

Oh No ! They are very good at making claims that they are the intelligent minds.

The opposition has access to Fiscal Reports, to perform the role of being in opposition

UPND and the rest have become Armchair Critics. No wonder some have started dinning with Mmembe.

When is HH going to tell Zambia what he would do different to:

      1. Improve the standard of living. 2. Create jobs. 3 Better Pay. Increase Exports etc…

The problem with HH is that he sees everything from the Corporate Mirror. He cannot relate issues to Social Chapters, Common Sense, Legislative, Structures etc.

HH can lay foundation but cannot fix zambia not even in 5yrs. He will…

    • The worst terrible days of suffering under the leadership of a sick, dying and visionless president. His 90 Days have only been characterised by jumping from one plane to another and issuing beer stinking and empty promises.
2016, kindly vote for HH a man who has been chosen by God and not Edgar Lungu a Sangoma supported president.

I thank you for accepting the wise decesion of going for His excellence HH.

    • @Maharaji,
HH started with a good powerful analysis. Unfortunately, kolokombwa like you spoiled the 90th day. You didn’t even read. Look what you born in the 70’s are commenting, pick all comments from your age-mates below, how can you produce a president?

    • President HH, this type of politicking will damage your
good future, please change for the better.

Moreover, you are an elder at church, a standing elder
prays for those in govt and wishes his country well by
      exercising faith in God.

Now hear from me President HH, Zambia is in the hands
of God and it is well with Zambia. President HH don`t
forget heaven because of State house, soon and very soon
we are going to see the King in glory.

    • @nostradumus..Zambians best president will be someone born in the 1970’s..we are smart, progresive, educated, not impressed with foreign infestors- we believe in Dambisa Moyo’s theory about DEAD AID.We have lived through massive donations and still see poverty. We are post independence babies- no hang ups about white superiority,we are entrepreneurs,we will change Zambia around watch this space! Your generation played it’s part and failed, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Seleni tuwombeko!

    • THIS IS ONE OF THE AREAS WHERE THIS GUY ALWAYS GO WRONG. THERE IS NO WAY ONE CAN BE IN ANY POSITION DOING BAD THINGS ONLY. BUT HH WITH HIS SOUR GRAPES WILL ONLY POINT AT BAD THINGS WHICH ARE NOT EVEN IRONICALLY POINTED OUT. WHAT ABOUT THE GOOD STUFF THAT LUNGU HAS DONE? HH, DON’T ALWAYS BE BITTER AND ANGRY ABOUT YOUR OWN LOSING OF ALL 4 ELECTIONS. BE A GOOD LOSER.

    • UPND has nothing to offer but to criticise and criticise day and night. Mr. Lungu’s best achievement is undoing of what Sata stood for. In 90 days he has shattered the cartel’s hold on judiciary, intelligence and economy. His 90 days achievements are , rule of law, violence free elections, no persecution of any opposition cadre, flow of investment from the Chinese and accepting the past mistakes and showing willingness to change for the better. PF under Mr. Lungu is not the same as under Sata. It is vibrant and democratic, not family tree monkeying around.

    • HH is a murderer of retrenched workers of parastatals under his undervalued privatisation hand in gloves with Kafupi. Anybody but HH is fine.

  2. slightly sensible but not much objectivity.Try Vroom model may be to understand president Lungu and his group.Otherwise continue complaining while others are busy expanding their financial bases.Look at domestic construction industry how it is booming, but others are just imagining selling tomatoes.Ask real masters,Wadachovu and GBM to mention but a few about entrepreneurship skills. It will help you to survive in these difficult times where only the strong will manage to survive. No meat pies any more boys!!!!!!!!

  3. We live in a republic ie Government by representation. In civics we are taught that “Government is us.” whether we voted for PF or not, we should support and criticize our Government.

If Zambians really believed in a 90 day constitution. They would not have elected Edgar. Truth is majority of Zambians dont know what is in the draft because it is only a priority for the politicians and not the masses.

UPND has members of parliament, let them move a motion to amend the need for by-elections. If someone loses the seat let the runner up take over or something, they may frame it the best way they feel

Chikwanda explained the Wage Freeze clearly, Gvt. dsnt exsit to pay wages

Its easy to oppose. Ask Vincent Mwale or Kaingu they have both toned down since joining the executive…

    • Ask the current Chair of UPND why she supported and strongly defended the wage freeze under MMD. Ask Magande why he supported a wage freeze under Levy’s tenure. Why are we so hypocritical as we sidestep the real issues? We do need a more enlightened leadership. Not necessarily a gadget-carrying 70s kid as advocated by some but by a mindful group that respects mortality and refuse to gather useless artifacts that can better be distributed to a deserving population. Enough said.

  4. I’ve said it before and I will say it again: there is simply too much focus on the presidency and the ruling party in Zambia.

National development and progress is about the people, not presidents or political parties. HH would do well to focus on the people – to recognise the potential in every Zambian as an agent of proress and stop wasting time on scrutinising what government has done and not done.

It is the same reason why Greece has not been progressing since 2009. They have been focussing on their leaders and the EU to save them from their economic maladies. But not until the people themselves change their attitude and start investing in their country will they see economic progress.

    • How can we not focus on the leadership ie president and ruling party when our flawed constitution gives them so much power to influence decision making…when are you going to pull your head out of the sand….its likened to trying to kill a large venomous snake in a dark room by cutting off its tail first.

      wake up!!

    • If I’m rightly informed, the “people driven” constitution is on it’s way. The question is: are the people ready to play their part once it is released? Do they even realise that they have a role to play?

Trust me, I’m wide awake. The tendency of “let government deliver while we sit back & enjoy” wont take us anywhere. It is what has gotten so many economies into a mess the world over.

    • “Sit back and enjoy…” what? What is there to enjoy from government performance?

We want the government to fix roads, stop being corrupt, eradicate crime, level the business playing field, medicines in hospitals, upgrade hospitals (not stadiums) to world class standards, streamline administrative processes, get out of business – close down Zambia Daily Mail, Times of Zambia, etc. – eradicate crime, among others.

The rest we will do ourselves.

    • @nine chale thats one of the smartest things I’ve read on this blog.I bet you are one of those born in the 1970’s. I’m sick and tired of hero worshipping political figures. One man alone can not change Zambia. We all have a role to play in whatever field.viva freedom from economic colonialisation! viva – post independence leaders

  5. Mr HH,
I will start by saying that leadership is not about what is expected, but what is needed. President Lungu has done what has not been done since Zambia’s independence in 1964 and that is to have an all-inclusive cabinet. He has taken on the Zambian cartel to which HH and most of his top UPND leaders are members. Apart from being tribal, the major problem with HH is that he thinks leadership is based on popularity contest which works only for people with money, criminals, and puppets with the right profile. HH doesn’t seem to know what it takes to change a country for good. For example HH and the UPND party have never condemned tribal extremism of the Tonga speaking people. HH has said anything about the separation of secret societies and Freemasons lodges from politics.

    • Don’t be stupid hate HH if you want …tongas are not tribal ***** ..more over hh loses nothing but you are wallowing in poverty. Continue eating your tribe.

    • Ulabeja mulumbwana, musankwa, mwamuna, musimbi, msikana, or whatever you are. The most inclusive and well balanced cabinet was KK’s. We are yet to see any action that will rival that.

Kaunda’s cabinet plus his central committee came from all conceivable corners of our beloved Zambia.

      Speak the truth.

  6. The worst terrible days of Zambia’s suffering under the poor leadership of a sick, dying and visionless president. His 90 Days have only been characterized by jumping from one plane to another and issuing beer stinking and empty promises.
2016, kindly vote for HH a man who has been chosen by God and not Edgar Lungu a Sangoma supported president.

I thank you for accepting the wise decesion of going for His excellence HH.

  7. I berge all well meaning PF Members to plead and request His Excellence edgar Chagwa Lungu to voluntarily step down for he has proved that being a president has and will never be his job. The man has failed alot of Zambian people in many ways.
Pliz your excellence step down. We love you and we would not love you to be e,embarrassed by your continued failure. I thank you Mr. President and hope you will take our request into consideration.

  8. Hamahilda Hamalama, please spare us our ears. Nothing is new from HH. Same old wounds. HH keeps making same mistake of bad timing and yapping without giving solutions. We are tired of this self and egoistic statements. HH knows that in countries with normal Constitution, EL takes governance today 25th April 2015 as the last three months were simply a handover and probational period. So come back on 25th July 2015 about EL’s performance not now as it is not fair. HH learn to sympathize with EL when issues affecting economy are due to shifts and shocks in international economics. This self destructive hype and hoopla will not help you with numbers to win 2016. Stop it Twapapata ba U5.

    • Slow down, take a deep breath, take your medication for the day. you will feel much better relaxed mentally, then read through the truths addressed by the writer and you might have a better perspective of Zambias status quo.

  9. How was HH’s performance as UPND leader? for over 10 years the party was going backwards untill next and his good performance was atributed to sata’s death and leadership crisis in MMD and PF. Despite his poor performance we have given him chance. so lets give lungu chance

  10. Edgar was a lazy man before he became a President and he is still a lazy man in State House…you can take a donkey to a watering hole but you can’t force it to drink. Edgar Lazy stated on campaign that he would continue with old man Sata’s myopic shambolic reckless govt so why are we surprised by what is going on.

LT sort out your website its full of malware and infecting our laptops and smartphones…its no surprise people have not been commenting in the last 3 days.
    Wake up LT admin!!

  11. What alternative leadership has HH offered now other than mere criticism? What percentage has EL scored Mr analyst? If your role is just mere criticism spiced with Hildah Malama’s insults not to mention her “physician’s” role of diagonising where and how sick President Lungu is, and when he will die, then you are equally useless, if not worse. Your role is only to lecture what your secretary has written for you but with zero percent ability to interprete the same into reality. Your scorecard is somewhere in the negatives.(below 0%) . Style up and give practical alternative leadership, not mere rhetoric. You are now boring with your unexplainable speculations. Give better practical analysis after 6 months in your “continouos assessment” if you wish, Mr. Analyst. C U then.

  12. Dammit!!! Why can’t you all morons typing here focus on issues the writer has addressed, rather than opposing and defending without giving a thought to what’s being said. Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean you always have to disagree and open your mouth to spill hate and ignorance. Take a deep breath read through and maybe you will see why Zambia is such a mess. Dammit!!!

  13. GOING BY THE MAJORITY COMMENTS ON THE ABOVE STATEMENTS BY HH, IT IS CLEAR THAT THE THINKING AND REASONING CAPACITY OF THE MAJORITY OF ZAMBIANS IS PATHETICALLY LOW, MEDIOCRE AND SENSELESS. IT SICKENING TO READ SOME OF THE RIDICULOUS COMMENTS IN SUPPORT OF THE PF LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNMENT. MEANWHILE THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC SITUATIONS ARE GETTING WORSE AND POVERTY LEVELS ARE INCREASING. I FEEL SAD FOR THIS COUNTRY.

  14. HH Will Be The Worst Performing President This World Will Ever Produce. The Economy Of This Country Will Shink Because The Goat Has Never Been An Mp Or Minister But He Tok Things Using Common Sense. Having Alot Cattle Does Not Mean U Can Run Our Christian Country.

    • You could have just kept quiet, buddy. Yours is one of the poorest arguments ever peddled on this forum.

Holding an office that does not have performance expectations and assessment does not make one competent. Ask Munkombwe.

    • There is enough evidence to attest to the fact that Zambia is in its present dire situation because of lack of effective leadership. All leadership has so far been provided by the people yu think are best suited to become president of Zambia. Look at Sata, from ward councillor to president, ooh my foot. All we got was cadrerism, violence and lawlessness. We need fresh ideas provided by fresh minds. Chiluba was never aCouncillor or MP but he brought in multi party democracy which made it possible for all Zambians to participate freely in politics, the same freedom that yu PF are now trying to stifle.

  15. Lungu hasn’t done a single thing to uplift the well-being of the nation, nor is he likely to do so in the future. The country now ranks at the bottom of the poorest nations on earth. This is so sad especially when you consider all the vast resources we are blessed with but which the govt has completely no idea how to convert to real wealth and benefit the people. The least these people can do is admit they are total failures, resign and ask capable leaders to take over. It’s unacceptable for Zambia to rank at the bottom rung of the most miserable and poverty stricken countries in the world alongside the likes of Somali and Afghanistan.

  16. I SHARE WHAT @ 1.7 MUZOMPIKI HAS SAID. VERY GOOD SUMMARY
READ BELOW AND STOP MONKYING LIKE U5 HH

UPND has nothing to offer but to criticise and criticise day and night.

    • That is what the opposition do, you low expectation Zambians! In opposition, you criticize. The administration needs to be kept on its toes by criticism.

Criticism comes with the territory. As the cliche goes, “if you don’t like the heat, stay out of the kitchen.”

It will be damm of HH to offer solutions to the administration. That, people, is not opposition. It is support!

Politics, if you must learn, is about convincing the electorate that you can do better than your rival. Otherwise complacency will set in very fast!

Let HH do his job. Until he sits on the throne, his job is to criticize. Remember Sata? That’s all he did and he did it relentlessly.

  19. The number of face book users has increased per month to 1.44 billion (Chinese population) but Facebook’s profit has reduced because of the depreciation of other currencies against the US$ and the ZMK is no exception. I, PERSONALLY, blame the economic malaise on the sickness of the late MCS because it was a case of when a cat is away the mice play. ABC said, “You know ba boss tabali bwino (The boss is not well). He is now almost an absentee landlord.” Corrupt leaders and the cartel had a field day. There is no way the late MCS would have abandoned the projects he initiated based on his past performance. As for ECL’s foreign trips let us wait and see if they will bear fruit. As for leaders being sick (e.g. JFK, Churchill, etc) it is part of life just like a family can have sick father.

  20. If you are enjoying in the present regime genuinely or corruptly you are the only luck one out of thousand several languishing without food, job, clean water etc these are some of the people above who can support wind but do not know where wind is going or taking them. Can Zambian think above the petty support or politics of belly and corruption . Everybody is affected, look at those surrounding you also not the selfish thinking or tribal support . Let us learn to be subjective zambians please.

  21. Its shameful to be zambian honestly with such brains ..
..surely can u compare el to hh? HH z far much better than your good for nothing guy …

  22. I read the article before knowing who the writer was – and I was saying to myself that it must have been written by a very bitter man and I was expecting to see a cadre’s name. Alas, it is HH!! Does this guy have advisers? Complete negativity is bitterness – who wants to have a leader who is coming from an angry club? An intelligent guy would have outlined the failures and successes alike. And then state what he would have done differently – oh, he is just bitter and has no ideas, he spends all his energy on fault finding, sorry!!

    • Try another word, please. Bitter is over played. Yaba!

Bena Zambia, they latch onto a word and don’t let go.

      Expand your vocabulary.
Politicians, as you have observed, are not very good language teachers.

bitter this one, bitter that one. Bitter, bitter, bitter,….

      Hehehe

  23. Ba H.H it’s sad u are aiming for such a big position yet economically u understand nothing.Zambia is better than South Africa…..In SA 1 dollar is equal to 14 Rands.conveting dat in our currency it means $1=K8.4,yet our exchange rate is less than 14 Rands or K8.4. Zambia is borrowing because u go to UK n denounce the efforts the govt is doing.Without analysing the story about Zambia, the so called BBC broadcast the story….shame….shame…shame.How can you win our vote if you continue the good things our forefathers fought for….the fought for the mines yet you came into existence n facilited the transaction, but this tym u are talking about industrialisation….shame…shame.

    • You. I mean you. Are able to criticize HH?
      Read your posting. Read!

You can’t even say, clearly, what you are thinking.

  24. it is very easy to mistake hh’s governance analysis to a grade 7 term 1 boy’s analysis . whenever he has a chance to show cause why Zambians shud give him a chance to govern. he fumbles and express his crass ignorance of governance as well as economic fundamentals. the chap shud ease his anger.

    • What cause did EL present?
      Let’s start from there.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I have no vision for this country…but vote for me anyway.”

Classic campaign ad, wouldn’t you say. Real cause.

“I am EL and I approve this message.”

      What a crock of manure!

  25. The heading sounded attractive, well until I read on, and I was not surprised but disappointed that

It is the same old, our very own, none other than HH talking about 90 days of Edgar’s PF the same way one would assess 3 years of PF. Same style as if we have not educated HH countless times (within the last 90 days of Edgar’s rule) about the way to get the respect necessary to approach the 2016 elections!

What is HH’s stand on the Tribunal for example? Confused and unprincipled of course, no wonder Edgar is having a field everyday with this easy meat of a politician (so called).

  26. Now I believe, HH is a poor leader. IF he has seen nothing, then the guy is politically & economically blind and far away from being presidential material.
    Some of his successes are;
    A) inclusive govt. Willing opposition leaders are now contributing to govt. UPND refused on their own, though some of their members are in it.
    B) relaxed POA
    C) allowing DEC, Police, anti-corruption commission work independently
    D) continuation of projects
    started by RB & MCS.
    E) creating enabling environment that is attracting investors to Zambia.
    F) openly discussing constitution with all interested. Willing to enact major parts immediately.
    G) reduced m/meal & fuel prices to enable more people access.
    H) has taken crooks (cartel head-on for the good of the country.
Oh time to leave work, will…
