Mbesuma is Zambia’s top marksman in South Africa

Striker Collins Mbesuma has emerged as Zambia’s most prolific player in the ended 2014/2015 South African Premier Soccer League season.

Mbesuma scored six league goals for Mpumalanga Black Aces who finished 10th on the table.

The Zambia striker was eight goals away from PSL top scorer Moeketsi Sekola of Free State Stars who netted 14 goals.

Mbesuma was the second highest scorer at Black Aces where Zimbabwe’s Tendai Ndoro was the top scorer with seven goals.

Elsewhere, ex-Nchanga Rangers forward Bornwell Mwape scored four goals for now relegated PSL side AmaZulu.

Mwape’s goals proved futile as AmaZulu finished bottom of the 16-team league table.

Former Chipolopolo captain Christopher Katongo netted a paltry two goals for Bidvest Wits.

Other Zambians playing in the PSL like Clifford Mulenga of Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates’ new-man Mwape Musonda could not even make the top scorer’s chat.

Meanwhile, the influence of Zambian players in South Africa has has been dwindling over the years.

This can be proved as no Zambian player has made the shortlist for the PSL awards.

    • He is the greatest before Kalu. Kalu come in fourth after Kalaba, Katongo, Clifford Mulenga.

  1. Is this how low we’ve sunk and accepted it such that we’re even praising mediocrity … making comparisons among Zambians only when we’ve in the past been right there at the top with Mbesuma himself, Chris Katongo and let alone Kalu? Fellow Zambians, let’s not give up and lower the bar. Let’s continue to work hard and get back where we belong! God bless Zambia!

  2. Kalu is NOT going by my rating. Actually, Benjamin Bwalya was better than Kalu. But Alex Chola was the greatest, imagine being a camputer by those days.

  3. Kalusha Bwalya was a terrific striker and can’t be compared to these quacks you are mentioning. The first and last player to be clowned African footballer of the year in the Southern region. He was surely in his own class. I’m not so sure about Alex Chola and Ucar Godfrey Chitalu since I was not there when they were playing.

  4. Godfrey Chitalu, Alex Chola and Kalusha Bwalya were all great players in their own right. Great Kalu surpassed the two because he ventured where they never ventured. Professional football enabled Kalu to play with the worlds top class players such as the Brazilian legend Romario. He also faced and tore to pieces defences manned by internationally recognized defenders. One can never think of any other Zambian player who is as inspirational as Kalu was. Above all, he is the only Zambia player to have won the African Footballer of the year award. Poor soccer infrastructure, erratic management and lack of quality sponsorship have all conspired to make it difficult for Zambia to have more Chitalus, Cholas and Kalushas.

    • i have watched a few clips of Kalu at PSV, i think he played better in the zambian shirt. Perhaps, he was much better in the videos I have not seen. He was great though. however, comparing Kalu to Mbesuma, both at their prime, Mbesuma was a more prolific striker.
As for Ucar, the record speaks for itself. I think he was the greatest striker. there was also another who also scored goals prolifically, close to Chitalu. These scored goals in times when defenders were not watched as much.

  5. Kalu, the greatest player zambia has ever produced no question about it.

  6. Magic wand you have really spoken the truth. as football player Kalu can not be compared to any. he is the on ly one south of the equator to emerge as African footballer of the year. when he was voted at the time, he was voted by world class coaches, captains and media. Not this mediocre we are seeing in CAF nowadays. Do not write off Chris Katonga because he is equally the only one to have emerged as the Best BBC african footballer of the year in southern Africa, again on merit from world over.the difference between kalu and Chris is that Kalu was naturally talented but Chris was highly determined.
if one said Kalu has failed as an administator, i will agree 100%
