ZESCO Commissions a 110MW Capacity Solar Plant in Serenje

SERENJE, Central Province — Zambia’s transition to renewable energy has taken a major leap forward with the commissioning of the first phase of the Mailo Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant, jointly implemented by ZESCO Limited and Solar Century Africa.

The project, situated in Serenje District, is designed to generate a total of 110 megawatts (MW) upon completion, making it one of the largest grid-connected solar initiatives in the country.

During the commissioning ceremony, ZESCO Head of Renewable Energy Brian Kanyanga confirmed that 25 megawatts from phase one have already been connected to the national grid, providing immediate relief to Zambia’s power supply system.

“The Mailo Solar Project represents a key step in diversifying Zambia’s energy mix,” Kanyanga said. “It will strengthen grid stability, especially during low hydropower generation periods, and demonstrates ZESCO’s commitment to clean, reliable energy.”

The solar plant’s launch comes at a critical time when reduced water levels at the Kariba Dam continue to constrain hydroelectric production. The addition of solar power is expected to cushion supply gaps, stabilise electricity distribution, and lower dependence on weather-linked sources.

ZESCO said the project forms part of its Renewable Energy Expansion Programme, which aims to integrate solar, wind, and other sustainable sources into the generation portfolio in line with Vision 2030 and the Green Growth Strategy.

The company emphasised that renewable investment remains a long-term priority to ensure energy security for industrial, agricultural, and household consumers.

Construction of the Serenje facility has already created more than 480 jobs, supporting local employment and technology transfer. The plant is expected to boost economic activity within the district through infrastructure upgrades and the creation of supply-chain opportunities for nearby communities.

Solar Century Africa, ZESCO’s private-sector partner, commended Zambia’s consistent policy support for green-energy projects and highlighted the country’s abundant sunshine as a competitive advantage for future renewable investment.

“Zambia’s political will and strong regulatory framework make it an attractive destination for clean-energy development,” a Solar Century Africa representative noted.

The full project, when completed, will deliver its total 110 MW capacity to the national grid, reinforcing efforts to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining affordable electricity tariffs.

ZESCO said additional phases would incorporate advanced battery energy-storage systems to ensure round-the-clock supply and greater grid reliability.

The utility reaffirmed its focus on scaling up renewable infrastructure nationwide and expanding public-private partnerships to accelerate the diversification of Zambia’s power generation.

“Our mission is to guarantee sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity for all,” ZESCO stated. “The Serenje Solar Plant is a practical demonstration of how Zambia is securing its energy future.”

The commissioning of the Mailo Solar Project marks a significant milestone in the country’s clean-energy journey and underscores growing cooperation between the public and private sectors in addressing Zambia’s long-term power needs.

Sangwa and Banda Forge Citizen-Led Political Alliance

Sangwa and Banda Forge Citizen-Led Political Alliance

LUSAKA — Constitutional lawyer John Sangwa and politician Dolika Banda have announced a formal alliance under the Movement for National Renewal (MNR), unveiling what they describe as a citizen-driven movement for Zambia’s democratic and economic revival.

The partnership, revealed on October 23 2025, combines Sangwa’s reform-based agenda with Banda’s grassroots political profile. It signals an effort to build a platform that places citizens at the centre of governance and national transformation.

The declaration ends months of speculation about Banda’s next political step after reports linked her to the People’s Alliance for Change (PAC). Instead, she has committed to Sangwa’s organisation, giving the MNR a stronger political face and nationwide appeal.

Sangwa said the alliance followed “deep reflection, consultation, and dialogue,” calling it a break from Zambia’s long-standing transactional politics.

“This partnership is founded on a shared conviction that Zambia’s future must be reclaimed by its citizens, not as spectators but as active architects of a just, prosperous, and united republic,” Sangwa stated.

He added that the collaboration was neither a political convenience nor a merger of ambition, but a commitment to renewal rooted in principle and integrity. The MNR, he said, aims to reconnect leadership with the people by promoting dialogue, transparency, and shared responsibility.

“This will not be a monologue but a dialogue with the people,” he said. “When citizens unite around a common purpose, no obstacle is insurmountable.”

Banda described her move as a deliberate step toward rebuilding Zambia through citizen participation.

“Change begins with us, and I am happy to share that I’ve joined the Movement for National Renewal,” she said. “Let’s work hand in hand for a brighter, stronger nation.”

Her entry is expected to strengthen the MNR’s outreach capacity, addressing questions about how Sangwa’s reform agenda would translate beyond legal activism into popular mobilisation. Banda’s profile, built on years of public-sector and civic engagement, provides the alliance with a recognisable presence in both urban and rural communities.

The MNR has set an immediate objective of recruiting one million supporters by December 31 2025, part of a strategy aimed at promoting “collective national ownership.” According to Sangwa, the mobilisation campaign will rely on direct citizen engagement rather than top-down structures.

The movement plans to hold a public engagement session in Lusaka in the coming days to outline its strategic priorities and action plan. The forum will focus on practical mechanisms for citizen participation in decision-making, governance reforms, and national cohesion.

“By all intents and purposes, this is more than an alliance; it is a national awakening, a solemn call to renewal,” Sangwa said. “True transformation will not emerge from tired institutions alone but from an awakened and empowered citizenry taking responsibility for the nation’s destiny.”

The MNR’s leadership says its roadmap will include decentralisation of political dialogue, civic education, and structured platforms for community-level consultation. The alliance maintains that this approach will shift the country’s politics from personality contests to value-based engagement.

The announcement has drawn interest across political circles, with observers noting that the union of a constitutional reformist and an established political figure could alter the tone of Zambia’s opposition politics. The MNR is positioning itself as a reformist alternative, prioritising governance accountability and inclusive growth.

Sangwa and Banda are expected to unveil the full framework of their collaboration at the forthcoming MNR National Forum in Lusaka. The event will detail policy themes and a schedule of provincial outreach programmes intended to expand membership and visibility.

The two leaders say their partnership represents a generational effort to re-engage citizens in shaping Zambia’s future through unity, discipline, and public accountability.

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) District Electoral Officer in Lavushimanda, Robert Chisanga, has encouraged the voter education facilitators (VEFs) to work hard during the ongoing mass voter registration.

Mr Chisanga has said the voter education facilitators must work hard to ensure the district registers more people as voters.

Speaking during the District Voter Education Committee (DVEC) monitoring Makanga voter registration, Mr Chisanga described the ongoing mass voter registration as a very important exercise that must be taken seriously.

“This is an important activity and for us to score as a district target, we are depending on you voter education facilitators because you are foot soldiers to ensure that you reach as many would be voters,” he said.

The District Electoral Officer further encouraged the VEFs to work hard in the field because the ECZ system is tracking the number of registered voters in 116 Districts during the ongoing mass voter registration period.

“This time around we will be able to know who has done a good job through the ECZ tracking system because we will be able to capture how many voters have been registered,” he added.

Mr Chisanga further revealed that the voter education facilitators that are going to perform well during this mass voter registration process will be considered again for the 2026 ECZ voter education process.

And one of the voter education facilitators, Enos Kashili said the mass voter registration process has impacted the unregistered voters.

Graduates urged to use innovation to fight poverty-Syakalima

1

Minister of Education, Douglas Syakalima, has called on graduates to use their knowledge, creativity, and technological innovation to drive national development and help eradicate poverty.

The media reports that speaking during the University of Lusaka (UNILUS) 18th Graduation Ceremony, Mr Syakalima said education must not end at academic achievement but must translate into practical solutions that transform communities and improve livelihoods.

“Technology must remain our servant, not our master. Let us harness technology to empower and uplift communities not to divide them. Our mission as a nation is clear,” he emphasised.

Mr Syakalima added that the country’s sustainable progress depends on citizens who think critically, innovate responsibly, and collaborate across disciplines.

“If young people like you turn potential into enterprise, Zambia’s dream of prosperity will become reality,” the Minister noted.

And President of the Association of African Universities (AAU), Professor Kenneth Matengu, has challenged university graduates across Africa to use their education and God given talents as tools to reduce poverty and drive the continent’s transformation.

Professor Matengu said Africa’s abundant natural resources have not translated into prosperity because the continent lacks adequate capability to convert its raw materials into finished products.

“Africa is rich but not wealthy. We have minerals, fertile lands, and vibrant people, but we lack the skills and technology to turn our copper, diamonds, and other resources into valuable products,” he stated.

He urged the graduating class of 2025 to embrace innovation, entrepreneurship, and problem solving rather than waiting for employment.

“Do not go out there looking for jobs, go out and look for work opportunities to solve problems. A job gives you a salary, but meaningful work gives you purpose and transforms lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, UNILUS Chancellor Caleb Fundanga stated that qualified education must not only prepare students for local challenges but also equip them to compete on the global stage.

Mr Fundanga said education should be a catalyst for solving real national problems while aligning with global priorities such as technological advancement, environmental sustainability, and inclusive development.

“Education is no longer just about personal achievement, It is about finding solutions to national challenges and contributing meaningfully to global progress,” he said.

One of the graduating students, Stanley Mumba has expressed gratitude to the government, lecturers, peers, and loved ones for their unwavering support throughout her academic journey.

The 18th Graduation ceremony is being held under the theme “ optimisation of technology relevant education and natural resources use for sustainable development”.

Ministries engaged to review age of consent

Parliamentary Caucus on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) Secretary General Sunday Chanda, says various line Ministries are being engaged to review the age of consent to a much bigger age from 16 years as provided for in the law.

Mr Chanda who is also Kanchibiya Member of Parliament said the Parliamentary Caucus on SRHR is working towards harmonising what is provided for in the panel code and the constitution regarding the right age to consent for sexual reproductive services and rights.

Mr Chanda said the gaps existing on the definition of a child in the laws provided conflict each and must be amended for a better generation.

The media reports that the Children Code and the Constitution defines a child as any person who has not reached the age of 18 while the Penal Code 87 section 138 (1) defines a child as a person under the age of 16.

Mr Chanda was speaking during the three-day orientation workshop for media professionals in Lusaka.

He also stressed that Parliamentarians have the responsibility to design interventions on Sexual Reproductive Health and mental health issues from the perspective of the youths.

“We want to amend what is defined as a child in the Children’s Code Act and the penal code, because these issues have brought a lot of problems and if we dont resolve the problem, we are failing this society,” he said.

He noted that the law provides that a child aged 16 can consent to sex while at the same time, the same child cannot access SRHR services because they are deemed as children.

The three-day workshop is in preparation for the 8th Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Forum set to be held from October 25 to 29 under the theme ‘See us’-Amplfying the voices of the African Child and young people.
