Government has commends ZABS for facilitating industrial growth, trade and public safety in Zambia.

0

Government has commended the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) for facilitating industrial growth, trade and public safety in Zambia.

Permanent Secretary (PS) for Special Duties at Cabinet Office, Milton Chibeleka, says industrial growth, trade and public safety are essential in achieving the aspirations of the people.

Mr Chibeleka further commended ZABS for its role in promoting standardisation, quality assurance and consumer protection on food stuffs and non-food substances in the country

He said ZABS is a key partner in advancing national development espoused in the Eighth National Development Plan and the Vision 2030.

Mr Chibeleka explained that the institution has made significant progress in expanding testing capacity, upgrading laboratories and enhancing compliance with regional and international standards.

He said this when he toured ZABS in Lusaka today.

He said the government prioritises quality in products that are produced both locally and internationally.

“Your work contributes significantly to industrial growth, trade facilitation and ensures public safety which are essential to achieving our national aspirations,” he said.

Mr Chibeleka has also challenged ZABS to ensure that products produced by small and medium enterprises in the country adhere to acceptable standards.

Meanwhile, Mr Chibeleka has disclosed that the government has come up with a Public Service Change Management, a framework that looks at and addresses products, excellence and performance.

Mr Chibeleka said this document calls for the public and the private sector to do their best and change the mindset in terms of output and performance in order to develop the country.

Later, Mr Chibeleka, who was accompanied by Human Resource Officer Rabson Manda, toured and inspected the laboratory to familiarise himself with the operations.

And speaking earlier, ZABS Executive Director, Nathan Sin’gambwa, said ZABS ensures that products that are manufactured locally and those that enter into the country are of high quality.

Mr Sing’ambwa explained that the production of food and non-food products and other essential services should be in line with the International Standards Organization (ISO), which comprises experts and technicians that approve recommended specifications for products.

He further disclosed that ZABS is constructing a new and bigger laboratory plant in Lusaka owing to limited space at its current location.

Lusaka City Council says it receives K150,000 towards Cash for Work programme every month

1

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) says it receives approximately K150, 000 every month for administrative purposes towards the Cash for Work programme.

Town Clerk, Liftery Ndaba, said in an interview that part of the money is also allocated to the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for workers as well as purchasing other necessary tools.

Mr Ndaba said in efforts to prevent any possible safety risks, some workers under the Cash for Work programme are encouraged to use their own safety gears due to the increasing number of people.

He has however stated that no tragedies have been recorded so far, adding that the programme has generally been a success considering that the objectives have been met.

The Cash for Work programme was launched in August and September 2024 in response to the 2023-2024 drought crisis in order to financially support vulnerable communities.

Meanwhile, Chainda Ward Councilor in Lusaka, Patrick Mpundu, has attributed the lack of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the increasing number of people working under the programme.

Mr Mpundu has since requested for more funds to be allocated towards PPE in order to promote public health and safet

Zambia, four other countries to benefit from EIB Global financing

0

The European Investment Bank’s Development arm (EIB Global) says it is committing US$110 Million to strengthen agricultural development across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Zambia, alongside Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Benin are countries set to benefit from the loan financing, which will support the modernisation of processing plants of commodities such as cashew, soy as well as cardinal storage, transport and infrastructure.

The EIB financing takes the form of a loan given to an international commodities company (ETG), one of Africa’s leading agribusiness supply chain players.

The project also supports ETG’s Farmer Extension Services (FES) programme that is in line with its long-standing commitment towards promoting sustainable agriculture.

The services include training and technical assistance programmes to support technology and knowledge transfer to smallholder farmers, as well as community based initiatives that will help farmers improve yields and adopt sustainable practices.

The announcement was made during a signature ceremony on the margins of the World Food Forum that took place in Rome, by the European Investment Bank (EIB) Vice-President, Gelsomina Vigliotti.

Ms Vigliotti stated that by unlocking sustainable investment, EIB is helping smallholder farmers and rural communities to build a more resilient future.

“This partnership with ETG shows how targeted private-sector engagement, supported by EIB Global, can deliver real change,” added Ms Vigliotti.

Meanwhile, ETG Chief Treasury Officer, Paul van Spaendonk, welcomed the new agreement, citing that this will propel efforts to foster food security in the region.

“This significant financing will accelerate our efforts to enhance agricultural competitiveness and food security across Sub-Saharan Africa,” he said.

This is according to a press statement issued to ZANIS today by EIB Media Officer, Harriet Ongaki.

Energy projects in Zambia to be given presumptive approval – President Hichilema

4

President Hakainde Hichilema says he has instructed that all energy projects in Zambia should be given presumptive approval.

The President adds that all energy projects have to be processed quickly without any obstacles.

President Hichilema said this when he graced the Southern Province Investment and Trade Exposition in Livingstone today.

“For all investors looking for investment in energy, in this room or outside, submit your checklist standing in your way.

“No ZEMA or WARMA to say wait, so that we can end load shedding,” he said.

And President Hichilema says the country is on the right path to achieve one million tonnes of copper production this year.

“We are confident as we increase our exports, as we knock on the doors of one million tonnes of copper this year, never achieved in the history of mining in our country.

“Today we are talking about beef exports, a project we envisioned from opposition and started off by pronouncing beef zones,” the President added.

The Head of State further announced that the first shipment of beef exports would be landing to the customers in Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“Before we took public office in 2021, retirement benefits were outstanding for 20 years back. They have all been paid since we came into office. That’s why trade is important. To achieve that, is good leadership, intentional leadership. That’s what this government brings to the table,” he said.

President Hichilema also noted that since the reintroduction of the free education policy, 2.3 million learners have returned to school.

Additionally, the President announced that the cabinet has approved a multi facility economic zone in Monze District of Southern Province that will see the assembling of tractors once operational.

“We will be assembling tractors in Monze very soon. We want to see beef being processed, because of the beef zones we are doing, we want value addition. This means more jobs,” President Hichilema stated.

Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Chipoka Mulenga, described the recently signed Local Content statutory instrument as progressive to both investors and Zambian businesses.

And, Southern Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, said the province is investing in technology such as irrigation schemes, mechanisation and agro processing industries that will not only boost productivity but also create jobs for the people.

He said the provincial administration is determined to translate policies into tangible outcomes that will build a region which produces and adds value to local products.

And President Hakainde Hichilema has urged traditional leaders across the country to make land available for investment opportunities that will stimulate economic growth and improve the livelihoods of their people.

Speaking in Livingstone today when he officially opened the 2025 Southern Province Investment and Trade Exposition, the Head of State emphasised that investors are eager to establish large-scale projects, particularly in renewable energy such as solar power, within chiefdoms.

He noted that such developments would create jobs, enhance energy access, and accelerate rural transformation.

President Hichilema commended progressive traditional leaders who have already embraced investment partnerships by providing titled land for development.

Chief Mukuni

He cited Chief Mukuni among those who have allocated significant portions of land to investors, enabling the establishment of various infrastructure and energy-related projects.

The President stressed that unlocking land for sustainable investment remains a key driver of Zambia’s economic agenda, as it fosters inclusive participation and ensures that rural communities benefit directly from national development initiatives.

The Southern Province Expo, being held at the Livingstone Golf Club, has attracted local and international investors, exploring opportunities in energy, tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Luampa District records an enthusiastic voter registration turnout

0

The voter registration exercise in Luampa District of Western Province this morning commenced with an enthusiastic turnout, with scores of residents lining up as early as 7:00 AM to register.

The exercise, which began on October 13 and is set to conclude on November 11, 2023, has already sparked calls for an extension from community members.

A check by the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) found long queues of residents eager to register, some arriving before official opening hours.

The high participation is largely attributed to the recent roll-out of National Registration Cards (NRCs), which has enabled many first-time voters to participate.

Kayombo Mutesi, a resident of Makuyu in Kahumbu Ward, Luampa Constituency, highlighted the significant number of first-time registrants.

“Many people did not have National Registration Cards (NRCs) in 2021 despite qualifying as voters, so they couldn’t register then,” Mutesi explained.

He expressed gratitude to the government, stating, “We thank the government for rolling out the issuance of NRCs effectively, this has enabled a number of people to turn up for voter registration.”

Given the large number of new registrants, Mutesi has since urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to consider extending the registration period.

Meanwhile, residents in Chacha have lauded the voter education exercise being implemented by the ECZ alongside the registration process.

Judy Mabenga of Sepo Village in Chacha told ZANIS that the initiative is proving crucial for rural communities.

“Most people in this area don’t understand the importance of voter registration, which often leads to low voter turnout.

“With the implementation of voter education, we have learned the importance of exercising our rights to vote. This time, I expect a large turnout, especially among young people,” she said.

Masumo Ngenda, from Kakulo Village further emphasised the value of the education programme, particularly regarding the removal of deceased voters from the roll.

“Removing deceased voters is one area people haven’t taken seriously, but through voter education, I’ve learnt the importance of having the deceased removed to reduce the cost of running elections.

“The resources saved can then be channeled to other developmental programmes,” Ngenda explained.

The voter registration exercise will provide citizens with a critical window to secure their right to participate in future elections.

Fake reports on school feeding programme irks Kasama DC

0

Kasama District Commissioner, Annie Paul, has dismissed social media rumours alleging that a named school is charging pupils to benefit from the school feeding programme being implemented by Mary’s Meals.

The media reports that Mrs Paul has clarified that the school feeding programme is free of charge and supported by the government, with the aim of improving the nutrition status and academic performance of learners.

She stressed that no school in the district is requesting parents to contribute money towards the programme, noting that parents have instead embraced the initiative through the Parent Teachers Committee (PTC).

“I am happy that at this school, the PTC leadership is at the forefront in supporting the implementation of the school feeding programme which has positively impacted the lives of learners,” she said.

Mrs Paul further explained that parents are only asked to assist by cooking meals for pupils as their contribution.

She warned against spreading false information that could discourage stakeholders from supporting the initiative.

“These lies circulating on social media can negatively affect the implementation of the programme, and my office will not tolerate such behaviour,” she cautioned.

She made the remarks when she addressed parents at Mubanga Chipoya Primary School in Kasama District.

Meanwhile, parents have also expressed disappointment over the false social media claims, reaffirming their support for the feeding programme.

One of the parents, John Botton, said the initiative is running smoothly and has led to noticeable improvements in children’s academic performance and health.

“The school feeding programme is impacting positively on the health and academic performance of our children,” he said, urging fellow parents to continue supporting government programmes that promote education and nutrition.

He further stated that those spreading falsehoods online do not mean well for the community.

Mr Botton also called for respect towards school head teachers, describing them as key partners in nurturing learners into responsible citizens.

“We should learn to appreciate the roles school administrators play in shaping our children’s future and instilling good morals in them,” he added,

First Lady, Mutinta Hichilema, has commended the Indian government for its unwavering support to different sectors of the economy in Zambia.

Mrs Hichilema says Zambia and India have not only shared the same political, culture and social aspirations but also committed themselves to upholding democracy and good governance.

Mrs Hichilema was speaking today when she received sewing machines from the Indian High Commissioner to Zambia, Alok Ranjan Jha, in Lusaka.

The First Lady, who thanked the Indian government for the gesture, said the donation reflects the excellent friendship that exists between the two countries.

She noted that the donation also demonstrates the shared vision of empowerment and sustainable development.

“I assure you that this donation will have a positive impact on the lives of many Zambians,” she said.

Mrs Hichilema explained that the gesture will add to the already existing initiatives of empowering and supporting women and youths with skills to sustain their lives.

“We will ensure that these machines will be distributed to beneficiaries who will maximise their utility,” she said.

Mrs Hichilema further assured the Indian government of continued partnerships in the quest to improve the welfare of vulnerable people in the country.

“When countries unite to uplift the vulnerable people, the result is hope in action and dignity for our people will be renewed,” she said.

Mrs Hichilema noted that the donation is more than charity but a way of strengthening the two countries’ relations and collaboration.

And speaking earlier, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation, Etambuyu Gundersen, said the donation will greatly help in complementing the government’s efforts to economically empower women through skills development and innovation.

Ms Gundersen noted that Zambia and India enjoy warm bilateral relations premised on shared values such as respect for human rights and commitment to principles of democracy and good governance.

She added that the government’s desire is to continue to work towards strengthening these relations for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

“The government is grateful to the Indian government for its continued support which has contributed greatly to the social economic development of the country,” she noted.

Mr Ranjan Jha added that human resource builds a strong foundation for any country to develop and alleviate poverty.

“This donation, Madam First Lady, has nothing to do with how rich my country is. It is about empowering Zambians to also have a good foundation through skills and that is why we have brought this donation,” he stated.

The Indian government has donated 500 sewing machines and 100 embroidery machines.

Zambia, China strengthen water, sanitation cooperation

1

Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, says the government is committed to strengthening collaboration with China to enhance water and sanitation development in Zambia.

Speaking when a delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources paid a courtesy call on him in Lusaka today, Mr Nzovu said the partnership between the two countries continues to yield tangible results in the water sector.

“The government is ready to work with the Chinese people to improve water sanitation in the country,” he said.

He added that ongoing efforts between the two sides are a testament to the strength of their cooperation.

Mr Nzovu cited the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Power China in August 2024, which launched critical planning and research studies for two major projects namely Luapula-Kafue Water Transfer Project and the Comprehensive Water Development Plan for the Kafue catchment.

“These are transformative projects that will redefine water security in Zambia,” he said.

He has meanwhile revealed that another MoU, which will aim at undertaking feasibility studies for the Lunga and Kifubwa dams, will be signed before this year ends.

The MoU will boost irrigation and water supply for the Zambian communities living around the two dams.

Mr Nzovu said the mutual friendship between Zambia and China has enabled both countries to jointly explore opportunities for investment and innovation in water management and hydropower development.

He has since reaffirmed Zambia’s readiness to cooperate with the Chinese government on hydropower and renewable energy initiatives to support the development of solar power plants and strengthen the country’s energy mix.

Meanwhile, Vice Minister of Water Resources of China, Wang Baoen, said China and Zambia have enjoyed a long and friendly cooperation in the water sector, especially under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Mr Baoen also said the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources and its affiliated institutions have signed an MoU on small hydropower cooperation with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

A 43-year-old man of Riverside Compound in Lundazi District has died under unclear circumstances after winning K260,000 from a gaming machine popularly known as Bonanza.

The deceased, identified as Undani Phiri, was last seen alive on October 11, 2025, when he left home to drink locally brewed beer at an unknown place.

According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba, Phiri returned home around 15:00 hours and informed his 60-year-old mother, Witness Chabinga, that he had won Bonanza money before leaving again to continue drinking.

Mweemba said the deceased returned home around 23:30 hours in a drunken state and went to his bedroom to sleep.

On October 12, 2025, his mother went to wake him around 06:00 hours but found him unconscious. He was rushed to Mwase Zonal Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Dr. Mfula, who is also Lundazi Town Council Secretary, advised the facilitators to avoid engaging in partisan politics while performing their duties.

He said the success of the 2026 general elections would depend on how well the voter registration exercise is conducted.

Dr. Mfula urged the facilitators to ensure that new eligible voters are captured and that those with missing or defaced voter cards get replacements.

He also warned the facilitators against misconduct, including engaging in immoral behavior or beer drinking during the exercise.

Dr. Mfula said any facilitator found misbehaving would be removed and replaced.

Vice President to grace 2025 Lusaka Province Independence Carnival

0

Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, is expected to grace the 2025 Lusaka Province Independence Carnival, which will take place on 25th October at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Lusaka Province Principal Public Relations Officer, Logic Lukwanda, confirmed that preparations for the event have intensified.

Mr Lukwanda said this year’s Independence Day celebration’s theme “61 Years of Peace and Unity – Building a Resilient and Prosperous Zambia,” reaffirms the country’s long-standing motto of “One Zambia, One Nation”, which has been the bedrock of national unity since independence in 1964.

He told ZANIS in an interview that Lusaka Province Administration interprets the theme as a reaffirmation of the peace and unity that Zambia has enjoyed over the past 61 years.

Mr Lukwanda said the theme also serves as a reminder to uphold the values that have sustained the country through the decades while promoting tourism and preserving cultural heritage.

“The theme means remaining strong and resilient to withstand all elements of division such as tribalism, hate, or nepotism at all levels and in all sectors. Zambia belongs to all of us, and we own the country equally, regardless of which tribe or region we come from,” he said.

Mr Lukwanda revealed that there are several high-profile music artists that have been invited to perform at the carnival including Yo Maps, Chester, Chanda Na Kay, Chile One, and celebrated bands such as Amayenge, Airpower, Green Labels, and the Peace Preachers.

He said, in line with the spirit of national unity, the province has also invited traditional cultural dance troupes from all 10 provinces to perform during the event.

Mr Lukwanda stated that the Carnival will feature a street parade beginning from Kalingalinga, passing through Hellen Kaunda, Mtendere, Kaunda Square, and Kamanga, before reaching Nkoloma Stadium in Chelstone where the main event will take place.

Dr. Nevers Mumba Denounces Falsely Attributed Story About John Sangwa

2

Dr. Nevers Mumba has addressed and corrected a false story circulating online on on facebook page “THE CANDIDATES,” which purported that he made disparaging remarks about State Counsel John Sangwa following Sangwa’s announcement to step away from active legal practice and pursue a political path.

In a statement, Dr. Mumba clarified, “Let me be CLEAR: I have made no such statement. In fact, my position is quite the opposite.”

He stated that he warmly welcomes Counsel John Sangwa into the national political arena, describing him as “one of Zambia’s most distinguished legal minds” who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and made profound contributions to the legal profession and the country. Dr. Mumba said Sangwa’s decision to engage in political discourse is commendable and timely, given the nation’s quest for renewal and progress.

Dr. Mumba shared that his own entry into politics was driven by a desire to serve beyond the pulpit, and he cited President Hakainde Hichilema’s transition from a finance and investment background to national leadership. He emphasized that national leadership is not the exclusive preserve of career politicians and that the table should allow distinguished Zambians who have shown exceptional competence in their fields to participate without undue prejudice.

“After all, there is no specialized university that grooms Presidents, it therefore follows that the choice of people to run for President must be Zambians with outstanding leadership ability across various disciplines and vocations, and on this, Counsel Sangwa qualifies, no question!” he said.

Dr. Mumba acknowledged that Sangwa joins politics at a time when Zambian politics is a “cut throat and a bare knuckles fight,” but added, “if he made it in the courtroom, he must now take some of that strength he gathered along the way to the political battlefield.”

He expressed disappointment with the online publication, stating, “This is not the kind of reporting we need.”

The story Dr. Mumba was reacting to had claimed under the headline “JOHN SANGWA OVERATES HIMSELF – Nevers Mumba” that the former Vice President said State Counsel John Sangwa was overrating himself and could not become President sooner than those who had long suffered in opposition. The false report also alleged that Dr. Mumba said Sangwa should stick to law and risked being bruised in the political arena.

Emmanuel Mwamba Rebuffs President’s Assertion on Malanji Case

23

Patriotic Front member Emmanuel Mwamba has challenged President Hakainde Hichilema’s recent statements regarding the case involving former Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji.

Mwamba referenced a 2019 government announcement of a $20 million mortgage financing program to purchase, rehabilitate, and construct properties for diplomatic missions abroad, including new missions in Canberra, Australia and Ankara, Turkey, and rehabilitation of buildings in South Africa, Germany, and Washington.

Detailing the Ankara project, Mwamba stated that the government bought a chancery building for the Zambian Mission in Ankara. In December 2020, $6.8 million was sent as part-payment to the vendor’s lawyers, Burhan Asaf Safak. He stated that in July 2021, after Parliament was dissolved and Joseph Malanji was no longer Minister, a further $2 million was sent. In October 2021, the new government cancelled the purchase of houses but finalized the sale of the Chancery Building at a cost of $8 million, making the total payments $8 million.

Mwamba asserted that Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) Director General Nason Banda therefore lied and committed perjury by claiming $11 million was sent to Ankara and that this amount was collected by Malanji and repatriated to Zambia via a presidential plane.

He clarified that during this period, the Gulfstream G650 (AF 001) was the designated Presidential plane, while the Bombardier Challenger 9J-One was no longer a presidential plane. Mwamba stated that ministers used the Challenger for presidential duties, citing Davies Chama and Stephen Kampyongo’s travel to Malawi in June 2020, and Joseph Malanji’s use of it to attend the inauguration of Namibian President Hage Geingob in March 2020. He added that former President Rupiah Banda used the plane for medical trips to Dubai during COVID-19 airspace shutdowns, and that it was also used for duties to Tanzania, Israel, and Turkey.

Mwamba described as “sad reading” President Hichilema’s announcement that he worked to send Malanji to jail by contacting the presidents of South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Turkey to secure witnesses and repossess his helicopters. Mwamba accused the President of repeating the “$11 million lie” and of abusing his power by acting as “prosecutor, jury, and judge” against a political adversary.

This rebuttal follows President Hichilema’s recent engagement with UPND Lusaka Province party structures, where he reaffirmed his administration’s stance against corruption. The President announced that property linked to Malanji, including helicopters, would be forfeited to the Zambia Air Force for humanitarian and emergency operations.

“This is the job Zambians gave me, to fight corruption. Anyone stealing from hospitals or government projects is on their own,” President Hichilema said, emphasizing that all recovered assets would be repurposed for public benefit. He stated his administration remains focused on restoring integrity in public service and ensuring no individual is above the law.

Zambia Presents Agri-Investment Strategy at UN Forum in Rome

0

A high-level Zambian delegation has arrived in Rome to participate in the World Food Forum and the United Nations Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum, scheduled from October 14 to 17 at the FAO Headquarters.

The global forum, which coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will see 30 countries and six Regional Initiatives present investment cases to agrifood investors and development partners. The event aims to accelerate the transformation of agrifood systems to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Zambia’s delegation is led by the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Peter Kapala, MP, who will present the country’s investment strategy focused on food security, sustainable agriculture, and inclusive economic growth. The strategy targets key value chains in maize, soybeans, honey, and aquaculture to enhance productivity, create jobs, and strengthen rural livelihoods.

This follows a USD 960 million investment plan presented by Zambia in 2024, which continues to boost the country’s agricultural and aquaculture sectors.

Minister Kapala highlighted the nation’s recent agricultural achievements, noting that despite a severe drought and national disaster declaration in the previous season, Zambia achieved a record 3.7 million metric tonnes of maize production in the 2024/2025 farming season. He said this demonstrated the resilience of Zambia’s farmers and the government’s effective interventions in climate adaptation and irrigation development.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to modernising agriculture through investment in mechanisation, extension services, and value addition. He also pointed to significant growth in the sector, including a rise in soybean production from 400,000 to 760,000 metric tonnes, and the export of locally produced maize seed to markets in Africa and Europe.

On the sidelines of the forum, the delegation is set to engage in bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening agricultural partnerships and attracting new investment.

Kapala stated that President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government remain steadfast in their commitment to strengthening Zambia’s international relationships through trade, investment, and sustainable development cooperation. He added that such engagements reflect the President’s vision of positioning Zambia as a credible, reliable, and progressive partner on the global stage.

Zambia’s participation in the forum reaffirms the country’s resolve to accelerate inclusive rural transformation, modernise its agriculture sector, and position itself as a premier investment destination in Africa.

Electoral Commission of Zambia Kicks Off Countrywide Mass Voter Registration

2

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has commenced a nationwide mass voter registration exercise, which started today and will run until November 11, 2025.

The commission aims to capture 3.5 million eligible voters countrywide during this period. Speaking on a live broadcast monitored by ZANIS, ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis appealed to members of the public who have reached the voting age to turn out in large numbers and register.

“I encourage people to turn out in large numbers as the commission commences voter registration exercises in all the 156 constituencies and districts dotted around Zambia,” Mrs. Zaloumis said.

The exercise will facilitate new voter registrations, the replacement of lost or damaged voter cards, and the transfer of polling stations. The ECZ Chairperson explained that those who already possess voters’ cards issued in 2020 or obtained during the continuous registration period will not be required to register again. She added that the commission is determined to come up with a credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.

In Nyimba District of Eastern Province, the exercise has commenced in all 15 wards. Nyimba District Registration Officer, Gibson Mwemba, called on Voter Education Facilitators to abide by ECZ guidelines and strictly educate the masses about voter registration as they were trained.

Speaking to ZANIS, Mr. Mwemba outlined the eligibility requirements, stating that a person must be a Zambian citizen with a green National Registration Card (NRC) and must be 18 years old or above. He appealed to community members to support the Voter Education Facilitators during their ward visits.

Nyimba resident Mathews Tembo, who was on his way to register, thanked the government for the voter registration exercise. Mr. Tembo expressed joy that he will be able to exercise his right to vote in the 2026 general elections and called on all eligible Zambians to register as voters.
