Kasama Central Member of Parliament Geoffrey Mwamba has announced that he is donating his entire gratuity to his constituency to spearhead development.

Mr Mwamba joins Matero MP who two weeks ago announced that he will donate his midterm gratuity to a youth empowerment initiative in his constituency.

MPs are due to receive about 250,000 each in midterm gratuity around September this year while the remaining 250,000 will be issued at the end of the five year terms in 2016.

Mr Bwalya announced in a posting on his Facebook page that he is donating the money to Kasama Central because that is where the money rightfully belongs.

“I have donated my entire gratuity to Kasama Central Constituency because that is where it rightfully belongs as people who voted for me. The gratuity will be shared equally among the 8 (eight) wards in Kasama Central. I am into politics to serve the people and I remain committed to this ideal,” Mr Bwalya wrote.

He added, “As soon as I return to Lusaka, I shall write to inform the Speaker of the National Assembly to channel my gratuity to the people of Kasama Central who have made me to be what I am today.  Lastly, during my program on Radio Mano, I called for unity in the nation. This we must do without fail.”

Three UPND cadres were this afternoon arrested by the Police for allegedly wanting to abduct ruling PF Mangango Parliamentary candidate Rodgers Lyambai Lingweshi.

PF Mangango by-election campaign manager Obvious Mwaliteta says the three cadres were arrested around 12:00hrs after some UPND cadres allegedly attacked a PF camp in Mangango ward where Mr. Lingweshi was.

Mr. Mwaliteta has told Qfm news in a telephone interview that amongst the three who have been arrested and detained at Mangango police post is a Mr. Kenny Ndumba whom he says was the leader of the attempted abduction.

He says such politics which the UPND is portraying is allegedly typical of the opposition party and that it has further demonstrated that the UPND is an alleged tribal and violent political party.

The PF Mangango by-election manager, who is also Kafue Member of Parliament (MP) says his party is however happy that people of Mangango have come to the realization of the development that the PF government is taking to their area and that they want to cooperate with it.

He says the ruling party is thus remains committed to abiding to the Electoral Code of Conduct and that it will sustain peaceful campaigns through out the by-election.

Mr. Mwaliteta has since urged the UPND and other political parties taking part in the by-election to stop fighting each other especially that the people of Mangango are peaceful.

But UPND vice president for politics Canisius Banda has told Qfm news in a separate interview that his party has no plans of abducting anyone.

Dr. Banda says all that his party however wants to abduct is poverty, ignorance and disease.

He says it is for this reason that the UPND is calling for peace and harmony as the campaigns for the Mangango by-election continue and that his party urges the ruling PF not to use government resource in its campaigns.

Transparent International Zambia Executive (TIZ) Director, Goodwell Lungu, says his organisation will not relent in exposing corrupt public officers in the country.

Mr Lungu said huge sums of public funds have been abused by greedy and selfish few individuals, a thing he said should be rooted out in Zambia.

He said this today when he featured of the Zambia National Broadcasting Services (ZNBC programme dubbed National Watch on the disbursement of constituency development funds.

He thanked the public for the massive support given to his organisation on the important role it is doing in highlighting irregularities hidden in public offices.

And speaking during the same programme, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, Stanford Musichili, said the eight (8) officers suspected of wrong doing his ministry have been suspended to pave way for investigation.

Mr Musichili said no one will be protected at his ministry if found wanting of abusing public funds meant for the Zambian people.

The Ministry of Gender and Child Development will this week distribute 28 cheques worth K127, 000 to women clubs in four districts of Eastern Province.

The ministry will also distribute 31 ploughs to women clubs in Chipata, Chadiza, Katete, Petauke, Nyimba and Vubwi districts.

Gender and Child Development Director of Social and Legal Affairs, Simon Kapilima, revealed the development when he called on Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Chileshe Mulenga, in Chipata this morning.

Mr Kapilima said the resources are aimed at helping communities, especially women, uplift the lives by engaging in Income Generating Activities.

He stated that the cash and ploughs are aimed at enabling the women clubs engage in lucrative ventures.

He said that his ministry also gave a hammer mill and an oil expeller to women clubs in Vubwi and Chadiza respectively.

And Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Chileshe Mulenga, commended government for empowering women, saying the programme will empower the beneficiary women.

Dr Mulenga stressed the need to strengthen sensitisation on the utilisation of the resources.

He appealed to the ministry to partner with other stakeholders to enhance the programme and incorporate literacy and human rights programmes for the local people to get more benefits from the programme.

The Permanet Secretary noted that the programme has helped alleviate poverty among people in communities as a number of them are able to make ends meet as they engage in lucrative businesses.

He observed that the women empowerment programme has done better than the youth empowerment programme because it is helping expand economy of the province through farming as the beneficiaries make good use of the extension message in the growth of the agricultural sector.

“When you focus on sustainable ventures such as agriculture, you make more profits. It is money spent well because it makes a difference in the lives of the beneficiaries,” he said.

He noted that government has continued to empower both men and women and stated that it should be made clear that man cannot take the lead on this particular empowerment programme.

“People should be made to understand that there are a number of empowerment programmes for all people though women take the lead in this particular programme,” he said.

Indigenous businesses increase in N/Western province

Indigenous businesses with capital exceeding US $ 100,000 have recorded an increase in Zambia’s North Western province.

This is according to a study conducted by Belgium’s Ghent University which aimed at looking at the socio-economic impact of mining in North Western province.

According to a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Public Relations Consultant, Davis Mulenga, the study revealed that the future outlook bode well for the local businesses because of new mines that were opening up in the province.

It says the businesses have seen huge growth in the last decade, developing distribution networks for goods and services.

And on a large –scale, the study observed that more and more houses were being built and that a related feature of the construction business was carpentry and welding which the study says is highly visible along the main road.

The study also noted the ripple-effect generated by mining activities in the province and beyond, citing an increase in the employment opportunities offered by the mines ,which it says has led to more shops becoming active thereby displaying an increase in cash circulation.

The study emphasised the decade of growth by contrasting with the yesteryears before the peaking of mining activities.

“Before mining activities peaked, dealers in second hand clothes exchanged them for maize, a kind of antiquity trade because most people could not afford cash. The only salaried employees who could afford the goods and services on offer were a few government workers such as immigration officers and teachers,” the study revealed.

Meanwhile, Felix Kaputu, a Zambian-born lead researcher, has attributed the rise of indigenous private entrepreneurship in the province to the mining activities by FQM and other industry players.

FQM is one of Zambia’s most successful home-grown companies and said to be the only mining company listed on Lusaka Stock Exchange (LUSE)

Prof Kaputo, nonetheless, argued that if trajectory of growth was to be sustained, there was need for greater diversification and improvement in business skills.

Power rally to draw with Nchanga

0

Power Dynamos moved back into third place in unconvincing fashion after a 1-1 home draw with Nchanga Rangers at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe today.

However, Power were forced to rally to pick up the three points after Aubrey Chamluwanda fired in a 3rd minute free kick to hand Nchanga the lead.

Chamulwanda turned from hero to zero after handling the ball inside the area in the 24th minute.

Kennedy Mudenda stepped up to convert the penalty that fortunately went in despite Nchanga goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata getting the faintest of touch.

Thereafter, both sides had chances to clinch the win in an evenly contested but modest match especially after the break.

Ignatius Lwipa amazingly shot wide from close range in the 46th minute in what was his best contribution in the match before he was replaced in the 73rd minute by Alex Ngonga.

Power then had defender Billy Mutale to thank for robbing Bwalya Kasonde of the ball inside the box as the latter prepared to cock, load and fire from a very inviting angle.

Meanwhile, Ngonga’s arrival gave Power some spark in attack but sent two breakthrough moves inches wide of the left and right posts in the 79th and 81st minutes.

Power reclaim third place only on goal difference with 36 points, tied with Napsa Stars who drop back to fourth place.

The two sides are three points behind second placed Zesco United and a further seven adrift of leaders Zanaco.

Meanwhile in Chililabombwe, Konkola Blades suffered their fourth successive defeat after losing 1-0 at home against promoted Nakambala Leopards.

Moses Siyanda scored the games lone goal in the second half to hand Nakambala their second win in four games and maintain their unbeaten run in their last four games since returning from the mid-season break.

The Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) has dispelled assertions that delegates from Sierra Leone, who arrived in Livingstone ahead of the 32nd Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) Conference, were not screened for the contagious Ebola virus.

ECZ Principal Examinations Officer, Albert Siamunako, said all delegates from West Africa arriving in the country through the Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport have been screened and would be subjected to daily screening during their stay in Zambia.

Speaking during a press briefing at Zambezi Sun Hotel in Livingstone today, Mr Siamunako acknowledged that five delegates from Sierra Leone were turned away from a named hotel on Friday but were later accommodated after the Ministry of Health intervened.

“It is true that on the first day (Friday) we had five delegates from Sierra Leone who were not allowed to stay at one of the hotels here in Livingstone. But After Ministry of Health intervened, they were allowed and more delegates from West Africa are being allowed to check into lodges and hotels now,” he said.

Mr Siamunako explained that a task force comprising of the Ministry of Health, National Airports Corporation, Immigration Department, the Zambia Air Force and Ministry of Education as organizers of the conference was set up to implement measures of how to contain the disease in case of an outbreak.

“A surveillance team is already in place and the Ministry of Health has distributed protective clothing to officers at entry points and airports where delegates are being screened. Each time a plane lands, our delegates are being screened before they are allowed to check out. So the misconceptions going round that delegates are not being screened are not true,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders invited for the conference to attend without fear of stigmatisation as the Ministry of Health had put all possible measures in place to safeguard them against the deadly disease.

Over 100 delegates from West Africa are expected to attend the 32ndAEAA Conference taking place in Livingstone from 11th to 15thAugust, 2014 out of the 345 total participants from different examining boards in Africa and abroad.

Yesterday, Health Minister, Joseph Kasonde, clarified that government had not banned entry into Zambia of all individuals and nationals coming from Ebola Virus -affected countries but had merely issued a travel advisory memo as a precaution to prevent the disease from reaching the country.

Health Minister Joseph Kasonde has clarified that Zambia has not banned entry into the country of all individuals coming from Ebola hit countries but has merely issued a travel advisory.

Dr. Kasonde clarified that a travel advisory is not a ban but a travel advice restricting not only nationals of the affected countries but anyone traveling from the affected countries into Zambia.

He added that the travel advisory is a precautionary measure to ensure that Ebola does reach Zambia.

Dr. Kasonde was speaking at the Harry Mwaanga International Airport in Livingstone when he held a meeting with stakeholders.

He also announced that anyone suspected of having contracted the Ebola virus will be quarantined.

Ebola has broken out in West Africa and countries affected by the outbreak are Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

A statement posted on the Ministry of Health website on Saturday said Zambia would restrict entry of travellers from countries affected by the Ebola virus and would ban Zambians from travelling to those countries.

“All delegates from any of the countries affected by Ebola virus disease are restricted from entering Zambia until further notice,”

The statement, which was dated Aug. 8, also said that any Zambians arriving from those countries would be “thoroughly screened and quarantined”, adding that no further travel by Zambians to such countries would be allowed.

UPND cadres accused of beating up a local chief and his wife Luampa

OPPOSITION United Party for National Development (UPND) members allegedly beat up a chief and his wife in Luampa on Friday as they clashed with members of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) ahead of by-elections in the Western Province district.

The UPND cadres allegedly also forced Luampa MMD Member of Parliament Josephine Limata to flee in fear of being beaten.

Chief Mwanatete has said that the UPND cadres attacked him and his wife.

The traditional leader said the cadres were allegedly looking for Ms Limata but they never found her and so they turned their wrath on him and his wife.

The incident happened around 16:00 hours on Friday.

“Luckily, Ms Limata managed to escape. The gang, after failing to locate her, turned their anger on my wife and me, and started beating us. It was difficult to escape because they were so many,” he said.

He said the cadres, who were chanting UPND slogans, warned that they would not tolerate people who seemed to be supporting the Patriotic Front and President Sata in Luampa district and the entire Western Province.

Chief Mwanatete said the UPND cadres were preparing for a visit of their president Hakainde Hichilema, who was expected to address a rally at Luampa Basic School.

Ms Limata said that following the incident, she is now living in fear.

“I am here in my village on vacation. I have been here for a while but on Friday, the cadres came and attacked my chief, his wife and five other people. I sought refuge before they could get to me,” she said.

The clash between the UPND and the PF has resulted in property worth K30,000 being damaged.
The clash, which took place at a bridge linking Mangango to Luampa district, also left one suspected PF cadre injured.

Western Province Police Commissioner Lombe Kamukoshi confirmed the incident.

“We received an assault report from a man identified as Leonard Chisenga from Lusaka’s Kuomboka Township, who sustained deep cuts on his head and swollen legs. Mr Chisenga is admitted at Luampa Mission Hospital and is in a stable condition,” Ms Kamukoshi said.
She said three other people are believed to have been injured although they had not formally reported the incident to the police.

Ms Kamukoshi said the second report was received from a man identified as Martin Limata of Luampa district, whose two vehicles, a Toyota Harrier and Isuzu, were also damaged.
Machetes and sticks are believed to have been used during the clash.

But UPND vice-president for politics Canisius Banda has accused the PF of fuelling violence in Western Province ahead of the Mangango parliamentary by-election.

Dr Banda said his party does not condone any form of violence, accusing the PF of fuelling violence in Mangango and Batoka by intimidating the opposition.

“I have not received any report from Luampa but as for Mangango and Batoka, violence is being fuelled by PF officials,” Dr Banda said.

He said it is unfortunate that some UPND members might have used force against one of the provincial officials who was allegedly using a government vehicle.

PF Mangango campaign manager Obvious Mwaliteta said the UPND is practising campaigns of intimidation, tribalism, regionalism and violence.

Mr Mwaliteta said PF has identified suspected UPND cadres causing violence in Luampa.
“We have identified some UPND cadres that were hired to cause havoc in Luampa. They came from Bauleni in Lusaka and some are from Livingstone. These cadres also attacked Ms Limata in Luampa,” he said.

He said the PF will, however, try to stick to the code of conduct in its campaigns and will not be intimidated by any violence being perpetrated by the UPND.

Mr Mwaliteta, who described the campaigns in Mangango as peaceful, was however quick to add that he feared the violence from Luampa might spread to Mangango as well.

Sewe throw down the gauntlet at Nkana

5

Nkana must beat Sewe Sport on August 23 in Abidjan after the Cote d’Ivoire club shocked hosts Etoile du Sahel in Sousse on Saturday night.

Sewe stunned Etoile 1-0 away in Tunisia to step-up a dramatic photo finish in Group B in a fortnights time.

The Cote d’Ivoire secured the vital away win through their Niger striker Idrissa Halidou in the 52nd minute to lift themfrom the bottom of Group B to third place.

Etoile were unfortunate not to pick up at least a point on the night when defender Alaya Brigui’s shot came off the post in the 60th minute.

The status in Group B now looks like this; Al Ahly lead on eight points, Nkana are second on seven, Sewe swap places with Etoile on six and five points respectively.

The final games will see Sewe host Nkana while Etoile face the unenviable trip to Cairo to try and shock the eight-time African club champions.

Today’s Message: Water the Right Seeds

8

bible

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”
(Mark 4:8, NIV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

There was a report about children who had been bullied in school. It talked about how years later, those negative words were still having an effect on many of them. They interviewed this one man. He was in his 40’s.

He looked to be a bright, intelligent man, but he had not been able to hold down a good job, struggled in his relationships, and couldn’t seem to get on course. He said as a child, he was overweight. He was chubby, and some of the other children made fun of him and called him names like “loser” and “failure.” He made the mistake of letting those words take root. Now they were keeping him in mediocrity.

When somebody calls you something, either good or bad, that seed is planted in your soil. Now you get to determine whether or not that seed takes root and grows. When you dwell on what was said, you are watering the seed. You’re giving it a right to become a reality.

That’s why it’s so important that we’re disciplined in our thought life. It’s great when people tell you, “You’re blessed. You’re talented. You’re going to do great things.” Meditate on those throughout the day. Water those seeds and watch His truth become your reality!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, thank You for depositing seeds of greatness inside of me. I choose to uproot every negative word spoken over me by accepting Your truth that will set me free! In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Ebola entry ban against international health regulations – Banda

84
UPND vice president for administration Canicius Banda during the rally in Mandevu
UPND vice president for administration Canicius Banda

Opposition United Party for National Development UPND vice president for politics Canisius Banda has observed that government’s decision to ban entry for people coming from countries where Ebola has broken out is against international health regulations.

Dr. Banda says this is especially that the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday this week declared the outbreak of the virus in East Africa a global public health emergency of immense concern.

Dr. Banda has told Qfm news in an interview that with such a declaration that is guided by the international health regulations it means that all WHO member states, which include Zambia, should ensure that people continue enjoying their freedoms and their economies remaining active and vibrant.

He says it is for this reason why the decision that the Zambian government has made to ban entry would be seen as a hostile measure by countries whose citizens have been banned to enter Zambia besides the Zambian economy itself missing out on foreign investments.

The UPND vice president notes that his party holds the position that the Patriotic Front (PF) government should instead focus on ensuring that there is intra-country capacity for management of the Ebola virus by sustaining security at Zambia’s boarders.

He has advised that government should also ensure that there is trained staff are stationed at these points of entry with the right tools to screen people entering and leaving Zambia.

The opposition leader says government should further ensure that containment facilities and medical and surgical supply are put in place.

He adds the Ministry of Health should also provide containment guidelines for Ebola and that citizens too need to be sensitized about the virus.
